To Managers/ Program Coordinators LUMS Music Fest’21 Dear Sir/Madam, The Music Society of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is proud to invite your institution’s musicians and non-musicians to the “LUMS Music Fest 2020 (LMF’20),” which will take place from 5th February to 7th February 2021. The Music Society of LUMS Since its inception, in 1999, the Music Society of LUMS has actively been serving as a platform for talented artists across the country to showcase their abilities. Whether it’s the students of LUMS themselves, or those from other educational institutions, we have strived to give everyone an opportunity to not only perform on stage, but also to hone their skills in doing so. We believe that the Pakistani music industry is in a critical stage of its revival, with an ever-growing audience, and a pool of talent that is expanding just as rapidly. In such promising and almost revolutionary times, the Music Society of LUMS is eager to play its part in furthering the endeavors of those before it. What is LUMS Music Fest? Music Fest is the flagship event of the Music Society of LUMS, spanning a total of three days. It is primarily a series of music-based competitions, between students from all over Pakistan, punctuated by social events to take the edge off things and of course to promote music from every genre. Over 1200 people attend Music Fest every year, whether it is the participants from a plethora of educational institutions, or the student body and faculty of LUMS itself, making it, by far the largest college-based Music Festival across the board, in Pakistan. LUMS Music Fest 2021: Music is a form of art that knows no boundaries or limitations. It kept us all going through a pandemic and hence this year LUMS Music Fest aims to provide an even bigger platform to the next wave of musical talent. This year the event will be conducted virtually, therefore young and independent musicians from all over the globe are encouraged to take part in this competition. We are offering six competitions (details below), along with socials including panel talks, workshops, and concerts. In the past, we have hosted Tina Sani, Noori, Umair Jaswal, Kami Paul from Coke Studio, and various other artists to judge our competitions and deliver workshops for participants to enlighten them with fundamentals of music. 1 About the Competitions: 1. Individual Eastern Singing: This competition will allow participants to perform Urdu / Hindi covers. It will mainly focus on the participant’s vocals. Each delegate in this competition will be allowed to have one other musician to play an instrument for them. 2. Individual Western Singing: This competition will allow participants to perform covers in English. It will mainly focus on the participant’s vocals. Each delegate in this competition will be allowed to have one other musician to play an instrument for them. 3. Rap Battle: This competition shall provide a platform to the participants to compete against one another in a rap battle within certain time limit. Participants in this category are required to rap on a beat. They will be encouraged to perform on their self-produced lyrics and musical beat. 4. Battle of the Bands: This competition shall give musical bands the opportunity to compete against each other. Each band will be required to have minimum 3 band members. 5. Instrumental Competition: The focus of this competition will revolve around the skillfulness of an individual to play any instrument of their choice. However, this competition is also open for people who want to showcase their talent in beat boxing. 6. Original Music Competition: The idea is to encourage young artists to perform their own songs and get feedback on them from the judges. This can include both English and Urdu songs. Winners of this category will be promoted on our social media accounts. 2 Execution of Competitions: Delegates are confirmed after they have filled the registration form and have paid for the event. Each competition will have 2 rounds. Round 1 starts when registrations close. Within a day or two, delegates will be contacted by their competition head, who will give them a deadline of 2-3 days to submit a video recording of their performance. Competition heads will constantly be guiding the delegates about rules of the competition, procedure of video submissions, time limits, and all other relevant information. Once delegates have submitted their videos, they will be sent to reputed judges. Judges will pick their top 15 delegates from each competition for round 2; and then those 15 delegates, from each competition, will be contacted again to submit their videos. These videos will again go to the judges and then they will pick 3 winners for each competition. The winners will be announced on our social media platforms, on 7th February 2021. Workshops, Panel Talks, & Concert: This will give the participants an opportunity to interact with professionals, hear their experiences and get advice from the best in the country. This may serve as a major motivation for our participants to pursue a career in music. Workshops in particular, will be aimed at educating the potential musicians about key techniques required to produce good music. Along with that, our virtual concert will allow our participants to enjoy live performances by renowned musicians, from the ease of their homes. Execution of Socials: During the event dates, 5th - 7th February 2021, various socials will be conducted via Zoom.
