Criticisms of these two groups could often be found in the same northern evangelical journal, if not on the same page. Words such as “despotism” and “tyranny” described both the theological condi- tion of the Catholic Church and the political condition of the South. Slavery and Catholicism were labeled incompatible with republican insti- tutions and bereft of the virtues necessary to sustain a democratic people. -

Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses. -

NEEM In 1810, Theophilus Parsons, the Federalist chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, argued that the state need not recog- nize voluntary churches, calling the idea "too absurd to be admitted." In contrast, the modern idea of civil society is premised on the right of individual citizens to associate and for their institutions to gain the legal privileges connected with incorporation.' Federalists did not share this idea. They believed that in a republic the people's interests and the state's interests were the same, since voters elected their own rulers. JohannN. [Expositions 4.1&2 (2010) 47-62] Expositions (online) ISSN: 1747-5376 Avignon vs. Rome: Dante, Petrarch, Catherine of Siena THOMAS RENNA Saginaw Valley State University ABSTRACT In the fourteenth century the image of ancient Rome as Babylon was transformed into the positive idea of Rome as both a Christian and a classical ideal. Whereas Dante disassociated Augustine‟s Babylon from imperial Rome, Petrarch turned Avignon into Babylon, a symbol of an avaricious papacy. For Catherine of Siena Avignon was not evil, but a distraction which prevented the pope from reforming the Italian clergy, bringing peace to Italy, and launching the crusade. “There is only one hope of salvation in this place! Here, Christ is sold for gold!”1 And so Francesco Petrarch denounced the Avignon of the popes as the most evil place on earth since the days of ancient Babylon. This view of the Holy See should have disappeared when the papacy returned to Rome in 1377, but it did not. On the contrary, the castigation of the sins of pontiffs intensified, as subsequent ages used this profile to vilify the papacy, the clergy, the French monarchy, and the French nation.2 Not to be outdone, some French historians in the twentieth century sought to correct this received tradition by examining the popes‟ worthy qualities.3 It is curious that this depiction of Avignon as the Babylon Captivity has enjoyed such longevity, even in college textbooks.4 “Corruption” is of course a value judgment as much as a description of actual behavior. Doubtless Pope Clement VI did not think of his curia as “corrupt.” Contemporary citizens of Mongolia do not see Genghis Khan as the monster of the medieval Christian chronicles. -

The body politic metaphor, widely invoked in envisioning various modes of the existence and operation of a harmonious society, has been an enduring feature in the evolution of political thought, both in the “West” and elsewhere. The conference drew upon the cumulative expertise of scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds. It explored iterations of the body politic metaphor and its normative value for conceptions of social and political harmony from the Middle Ages to the present in the European, Islamic, Jewish, Indian, Rus- sian, and East Asian traditions of political theorizing. -

Entanglements Between Church and State in America
151 CHAPTER FIVE THE AMERICAN COMMONWEALTH It has not been uncommon for historians to view America as an experimental laboratory in political theory and practice in which the American character is represented as a triumph of common sense over ideology. The title of one recent book, Inventing America, and the subtitle of another, How Europe Imagined and America Realized the Enlightenment, together reflect a long fascination with the Yankee 1 ingenuity of a nation of tinkerers. The history books often neglect to acknowledge the religious wellsprings of this spirit of practicality which gave substance to the desire for religious and political liberty. It may be true, as Sanford Cobb claimed, that "pure Religious Liberty ... may be confidently 2 reckoned as of distinctly American origin." But this liberty did not spring fully armored, like Athena, from the head of Zeus. Earlier Americans, including our major historians, generally regarded the settlement and development of our country less as a testimony to frontier inventiveness than as an indication of God's providential blessings. Franklin Littell offered the following synopsis of this motif: For many of our forefathers, at least, the planting of America represented a major break from past history and a radical advance into a new age. God had hidden America until such a time as the Reformation could guarantee that the religion planted on these shores would be pure and evangelical. Certain writers linked three great events by which God's Providence prepared the coming of the 152 New Age: (1) the invention of printing, whereby the Bible was made available to all; (2) the Reformation, whereby cult and confession were purified; (3) the discovery of America.
