Hi Flyers - Spring is in the Air, quite literally ! As I write this article, its the middle of March and the snow is falling heavily and Gale force winds dominate the Scottish weather forecasts. Despite the Spring weather, I’m glad to say that all is not doom and gloom: The nights are getting longer, which means you can grab a flight during the week in the evening time; there’s plenty of events at Tayside to keep you occupied; Lots of Fly-outs planned which you’d be most welcome to attend & there’s a fantastic opportunity to visit the Dundee Control Tower / Fly a Jet in the Tayside Sim / see around the premises and inside the aircraft. Best of all its Free !

Who is up for a Fly-out ? Fife are having their annual Easter Egg fly-in over the Easter weekend, its always good to see our Fife cousins and have a natter when were there too. Highland Aero club have invited us to their Fly-in /BBQ at Easter airfield & Buchan Aero club have invited us to their fly-in at Longside. Details are in this Flyer. More Summer Fly-outs will be posted on the Notice-board and Forums section, so be sure to drop in for a look & respond if you are interested ( please state whether your a Pilot of Passenger) The question I get asked most at the flying club is, “ I didn’t know there were fly-outs” or “I thought the Fly-outs were only for Tayside flying club members” The simple answer to the above is, All Fly-outs are advertised on the notice-board / all events are advertised in the Flyer and on the Forums section of Taysideflyingclub.co.uk If you are learning to fly at Tayside Aviation - then you are automatically a member of Tayside Flying club ! Everyone is most welcome to attend all Flying activities at Tayside, whether it be Fly-outs, Talk nights, Tower visits or Airshows.

Three Important things to remember: 1. Annual Flying club Membership fee is due. This fee is for Club membership & Insurance to fly Tayside aircraft. The fee remains the same whether you join in January or July 2. Airside Pass Must be worn at all times - you can renew or ask for a new pass from Berna- dette ( Ops Manager ) - normal fee’s apply. 3. The Tayside Flying club AGM in February was well attended and a new Committee was selected and sworn in for official duties ! Lots of ideas was generated and an eager enthusiasm from new committee members will ensure a varied calendar of events for all to enjoy.

A happy couple about to embark on a flight around Angus

The recent Night Flying course was well attended and very positive feedback from all who took to the night sky. Its definitely a different experience, where you need to be 100% focused on everything you do. I completed the course and was absolutely thrilled at the experience. There’s so much you take for granted when you fly during daylight, but night time requires a different feel as there’s a certain edge to flying the circuit or landing with the aircraft panel lights switched off ! Some say that you need to use ‘the Force’, others say you need to have the skills of a Jedi Knight. But one things for sure, it sharpens your skills, makes you a more appreciative pilot and is a million miles of fun. The next course starts in October / November 2015 and I cant rate it highly enough - make sure you get your name down for the course nearer the time.

There’s a Countdown story later in the Flyer and I’m sure you’ll be amazed at the celebrity guests that Tayside attract ! Read on.....

We hope to see a decent attendance at the Open evening on Thursday 16th April at 6pm. This is your chance to see inside the Dundee tower and ask the kind ladies and gentlemen any burning questions you have about ATC ? You will also have the chance to fly in the Sim, or see inside the Tecnam or any other aircraft in the fleet.

It will soon be BBQ season, so I’m arranging a Flying club BBq for all to enjoy for free ( the moneys coming out of club funds ) . If you have a flair for frying Burgers, pork chops and the like then I will need your help on the day. Please let me know by e-mail if your services are free so i can assign you to cooking duties !

Throughout the Summer months there’s a good chance that you might see the ‘Herons Formation team’ putting their aircraft through a host of manoeuvres in the skies around Dundee. If you do, give them a large wave as they appreciate all forms of praise, and its good for their morale as they are all budding Red Arrows at heart !

The Flying club would like to offer our sincere condolences to the families of Margaret Ann & David Rous, who tragically lost their lives on 4th April. David based his Cherokee aircraft at Dundee & many club members may have saw them take off for Tiree that morning. Unfortunately radar contact was lost and the aircraft was later found by mountain rescue teams in the area of Glen Kinglass near Loch Etive. We are all very deeply saddened by this news and offer our respects.....

safe and Happy Landings in 2015.

Over a century of Aviation history ended at Leuchars on Tuesday 31st March 2015.

A poignant and militarily precise ceremony marked the end of 95 years of the RAF at the base. A flight of RAF and army personnel was led on to parade by the RAF Leuchars Pipes and Drums, led by Pipe Major Ian Hughes and Drum Major Alastair Pether. Several hundred invited VIP guests and around a dozen members of the public in a separate enclosure braved a bitter wind and the occasional sleet shower as the parade formed.

As senior officers took their positions, the pipe band played Hielan’ Laddie. At noon precisely, a flypast of two Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth flew from east to west. A single whistle blast then signalled reviewing officers and parade commanders to take the salute as the RAF Ensign was carefully lowered and folded away. Saluting ceased on a double whistle blast as the army flag was raised. The pipe band then played the Brave as personnel again saluted. The ceremonial handing over of the keys followed, and with that RAF Leuchars was no more.

The base will be re-named “Leuchars Station” and will become home to a variety of military units. In recognition of this historic occasion the Forces Philatelic Bureau will be publishing a special commemorative cover.

The cover carries a stunning aerial photograph of Leuchars taken by Drew Dudgeon superimposed with the Station crest and the cap badges of the four main military units that will occupy the site. A Scottish regional definitive stamp has been cancelled by the unique BFPS 3183 special handstamp.

The cover comes complete with an A4 double-sided insert in full colour giving the base's history. Both are presented in a cellophane sleeve to create a high quality souvenir of the handover. Versions of the cover include a standard priced at £6 and a signed limited edition priced at £12.

Wg Cdr Neville Clayton RAF, Station Commander, RAF Leuchars and Lt Col Ben Cattermole MBE. Commanding Officer, Royal Scots Dragoon Guards will jointly sign a limited edition of covers.

You can also order these covers using the Shop on webpage http://www.bfps.org.uk/ or via mail order by sending a cheque made out to BFPS CIC and sending it to BFPS, The Old Post Office, Links Place, Elie, Fife, KY9

It was a pleasure to allow them to use my photo. Furthermore the picture of Leuchars will always be associated with that historic event. I’m touched, proud & honoured they used my photo ! Drew Dudgeon.

Once upon a time, a young chap from Montrose called Mark Cuthill decided the life of an accountant wasn't adding up & decided that his office would be better located in the skies. He completed his PPL at Tayside in October 2012 with Neil Walker guiding him through his instruction. He then joined Tayside Flying club Committee & participated in organising aviation events & attended all ball bouncing Fly-outs too. He then went onto completing his ATPL’s in 2013 & 2014, then not content watching Stirling Albion thrash Montrose at football in his social time, he decided to further study and passed his Commercial Pilots License in 2014. This guy is no slouch & still not content to sit back and relax, he continued his studies & passed his Instructor rating at Tayside Aviation. He said, “Not only was I career driven but I look very fetching in the Uniform, or so the ladies tell me”.

Now most people would be permitted to have a sherry or two and look back at their achievements with great vigour, but not our lad. He then decided on a career to teach people to fly at Tayside Aviation, where he gained lawful employment ! But Mark has further ambition, & fully committed to the cause decided to enrol in the Instrument rating course at Tayside Aviation, which he passed with flying colours. In 2015 he decided to add one more feather to his cap and went to London where he passed his Multi Crew Cooperation course. Now with all this experience, talent, Tecnam Expert, and Best looking guy in Angus ( you did tell me to put this in Mark) will be put to further use as Mark has been accepted to join the ranks of Ryanair as a Pilot. We wish Mark all the very best of success in his new adventure & hope that he will return to Tayside to keep ‘real flying’ and SEP rating ! As with all legendary figures, we have decided to honour his departure & his Birthday at his leaving night at the end of April / start of May 2015. Venue to be decided nearer the time... Could this be the end of the story or the beginning of legend..... P a g e 10 The tayside flyer

All club members are entitled & warmly welcomed to attend all Fly-outs ! The main theory behind the Fly-outs is the challenge to fly to different airfields, with the added bonus that if three pilots fly a leg each then this makes the trip more affordable for all attending ! We also welcome student pilots to attend as a passenger, we hope they can learn invaluable experience by viewing what happens outside of the circuit, RT & frequency changes & procedural applications at different airfields. All in all its a great day out & a chance to meet fellow club members.

Fly-Outs are usually held once a month or more frequent in the Summer months. They are always advertised in the Flyer, Dundee clubhouse Notice-board & a more detailed description of events are located in the Forums section of Taysideflying- club.co.uk

The Beautiful Isle of Tiree

If you want to attend a Fly-out, please let me know by posting your intentions on the forums section of the above website. & state whether your a Pilot or passenger? If you want to be ahead of the game, then book an aircraft from TA, then post on the Forums section that you are looking for a crew. There’s always a host of willing people that will take you up on your offer. Sometimes we have more people than available aircraft, so best to book an aircraft when you see an Fly-out advertised, especially in the summer months when demand is higher. We always share costs of Landing fee’s / lunch etc. But the PIC always pays for the leg they have flown. Hope to see you at one of the above Fly-outs ! P a g e 11 The tayside flyer

Once again, Fife are holding their Annual Easter Egg Fly-In on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th April 2014 to which all visiting aircraft, pilots and passengers are warmly welcomed. All visiting aircraft bringing either a chocolate Easter Egg, a Cuddly Toy or some other small toy will have their landing fee waived. All donations collected on the day will be passed to Rachel House Hospice in Kinross. We have a Prize Raffle as well so you never know, you might win a bottle of wine ..... !

Someone from the Club Committee will be around the airfield to receive donations throughout each day from 10.00am until 4.00pm so please come along and join us, even if you just drop in and out and help us support this worthwhile cause.

We are planning a Fly-out to Northern Ireland at Newtownards. This flight could take anything between 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours depending on wind direction. The bulk of Flight planning will be completed the day before, which leaves us on the day with calling for PPR and doing all the weather checks for the route there and back to base.. If the weather is naff then we can decide on the day to go to a more suitable location.

Departing around 9.30am for Newtownards Lunch at Newtownards. Returning to Dundee - ETA 16.00

Tayside has welcomed many guests over the years, some rich & famous, some notorious, but rarely have we saw both brave & celebrity at the same time. Saturday 21st February 2015 was more like a Summers day, blue sky, bright sunshine and barely a cloud in the sky to spoil the view. Our special guest on this day is a brave and remarkable young 17 year old RAF Cadet called Rebecca Dalgleish from 132 North Berwick Air Training Corps. Rebecca has recently been diagnosed with cancer and despite being told it was terminal, aimed to raise money for the Childrens Hospice Association Scotland.

Jim Watt managing director of Tayside Aviation decided to put on a bit of a show and pulled out all of the stops ( even the weather was top notch) all in Rebecca’s honour. The clubhouse seats were removed and replaced by real Boeing 737 airliner seats !!! The aircraft hanger was magically transformed into a gleaming stage set whereby RAF awards could given by a another surprise guest of honour. But who could this be ? And what is the connection to Rebecca? ...... Outside on the Apron, an excited crowd of Raf top brass, Tayside members, Rebecca, her brother, her mum and dad & Grandparents had gathered to welcome the incoming aircraft. After three false alarms of deciding what aircraft the celebrity was in, a triumphant cheer went up when it was announced - ‘Vorderman downwind to land’ !!!

P a g e 18 The tayside flyer

Rebecca has created a bucket list, and one of her things to do was to meet Carol Vorderman from Countdown fame. I always knew that Carol was a dab hand at adding things up, but I didn't realise Carol owned a Diamond DA40, has a Pilots license and is an Honorary Group Captain / first female honorary Ambassador for Raf Cadets !!!!! She flew up from Gloucester in her own aircraft and was met by a very happy and smiley Rebecca and family. Carol gave a very warm welcome to all, a spirited inspection of the Raf cadets stationed at Tayside, before changing from her flight suit into her Raf Group Captain uniform.

Carol then presented all the members of the Raf cadets with First Solo Certificates, but special mention is worthy of Rebecca’s awards, A special Commendation from Commandant Air Cadets & the Andy Swierczek award for her determination. Carol also presented her with a special limited edition print, signed by the Red Arrows!

Rebecca has been a cadet for four years & has completed her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze & is half way through her silver. Her commanding Officer Flight Lt Iain Edmans said, “Rebecca puts in lots of time for community events, which has resulted in a Saltire award for over a 100 hours of volunteering & is very committed to the squadron”. She is a member of the squadron team who won the Wing swimming gala and has run a 10k event for the Sick kids friends association. “ Her news has been a shock to everyone but typical of her character, just after receiving the bad news that her illness was terminal, she immediately decided to raise money for Chas, Childrens Hospice Association Scotland. “Becky is the sort of cadet who stands outside all weekend to raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy collection, and she is a stalwart - a Real Trooper. She had chemo and radiotherapy & was even doing her cadet syllabus work form her hospital bed. P a g e 19 The tayside flyer

The afternoon was spent with Carol mingling amongst guests, chatting and also enjoying the lavish lunch that was supplied and paid for by Kate and Jim Watt of Tayside Aviation. Tv Cameras were on hand to capture the moment & Carol & Rebecca was interviewed several times. Rebecca said that although she was unfortunately diagnosed with terminal cancer, it has encouraged her to raise money for Chas which had done lots for her, so she wanted to return the favour by doing fundraising for them. “ Even though I have cancer there is lots I want to achieve in my life. Time to have fun, make plans and live”. She aims to raise £5k for the Hospice from donations to her ‘Justgiving page’ but to date she has raised a staggering £27 708 00. Carol said, “ I think her spirit is truly amazing, she is completely selfless and despite given terrible news about her illness, she has set to, dug in, and absolutely determined to make the difference”.

Rebecca, Mum, Dad, Mark Cuthill & Carol

Just when the day had went so splendidly well, Jim Watt had a few other surprises for Rebecca up his sleeve. Firstly he surprised her and her family with a flight in the new Tayside Tecnam twin propeller aircraft. Captain Mark Cuthill took off from Dundee and flew down the Tay, then South towards Raf Leuchars and surrounding area and allowed Rebecca to take control and fly the aircraft !!! Rebecca was in total awe and absolutely loved the experience.

Once the Tecnam and Rebeccas’s family had returned from their sortie - Jim Sent up the Tayside Herons, which are the Aerobatic Flying team made up from the finest pilots from Tayside. The Herons displayed some dazzling flying skills and tight formation, much to the surprise & delight of the people assembled on the tarmac below. The Herons gave a fine account of themselves, then bowed out with a low level circuit & landed in sequence. The crowd cheered & clapped as they returned to Tayside, and Rebecca and family were recipients of this special flying display in their honour !!! P a g e 20 The tayside flyer

What a memorable day for all ..... Carol mentioned that next year she will be conducting a ‘Round the World trip’ in her light aircraft. Jim duly gave her a few ‘essential’ items to take on her journey which included: ‘Our Lady of Loreto’ medal and prayer card ( she is the Patron saint of all Pilots) and a Tayside Ted !!!! Carol was absolutely blown away with the gifts and she assures us that both will accompany her on every stage of her round the world trip ! ( I wonder if she will win the Tayside Ted competition ??? ) Carol Vorderman was fantastic for giving her time and energy in flying up to Dundee for this occasion and making Rebecca’s dream come true. Jim Watt pulled out all the stops and made this all happen, the organisation, He supplied the venue, the elaborate lunch, the transformation of the hanger, the Herons formation display, the Tecnam flight for Rebecca and family, and all went without a glitch ! The Raf Cadet Officers - always on hand to lend support, encourage and formalise the occasion to make it so noteworthy. The weather was perfect all day - the weather Gods certainly smiled on us that day. Carol is now calling on all members of the Raf, Army and Navy & Royal Marines & general public to get behind Rebecca’s efforts to raise money for the Hospice, just by logging into, www.justgiving.com/Rebecca-Dalgleish/ and pledging any money you can afford. It really is a worthwhile cause & we would appreciate your support.... To see exclusive video of the day, then access this link http://forces.tv/61779605

■ Enter the appropriate listening squawk for the area, with Mode C if you have it

■ Tune into the appropriate frequency and listen out, without transmitting

■ Change back to 7000, with Mode C, if you have it, when leaving the area or changing frequency

Calling All Students - If you are a new student then please come along to the student training nights. There isn't Beyonce music or a pound a pint, but it's your chance to meet other members and learn ‘how it should be done’ from organised presentations about flying.

Out of Hours Permits - Have been bought for Highlands and Islands & Argyll and Bute Airfields. This really opens up Scotland for Tayside Aircraft, so if you fancy travelling a bit further and experiencing some fantastic locations - then the skies the limit - enjoy !

Airside: There is now a Security requirement from the Airport Manager to have Photo I.D. authority to be airside. Tayside will issue each member an Airside I.D. Card, lanyard and a plastic holder for a £5. Remember the next time your at the club to get your photo taken at the Ops desk and Bernadette will add it to the I.D. Card which you’ must wear at all times.

Aircraft Folders - If you take an aircraft for a land away remember and take the appropriate Aircraft Folder with you. If your flying around the local area then put the Aircraft folder on the Top shelf before you leave - and then put it in the bottom shelf when you return. This way Operations will know whether your Aircraft is in the air or on the ground?

We are encountering a situation where people are who are not authorised to are deferring aircraft defects.

It is clearly stated in the operations manual of Tayside Aviation that: "all aircraft defects must be recorded on the daily technical log in the line under 'defect' as they arise, this automatically makes the aircraft unserviceable. All defects thus noted must be immediately referred to the Duty Engineer/Duty Instructor and only the Duty Engineer/Instructor can decide when a defect can be deferred."

So, if you find a defect always let the Duty Instructor know and write it in the "defect or nil" column, then sign the post flight signature column (if PIC). No action should be taken by anyone other than Duty Instructor/Engineer; nothing should be written in the "Defect Action" column. P a g e 27 The tayside flyer Wings and Things

Thanks to all flyers who attended Jim’s Talk nights in January / February. The feedback was 100% positive with everyone expressing they enjoyed both the content of the course and the delivery. These nights intend to give you all the information and instruction you need for both inside and outside the circuit. They are designed not to test your knowledge, but to give you an insight into varying aviation circumstances, or Diversion routing, or how RT should be spoken which in turn will make your judgement more informed & make you a safer pilot !

See you all next Winter for more of Jims aviation Talk nights !!!

Tayside launched the Degree programme in association with Middlesex University and . The first course started on January 12th and is a three year program ending with a job with Loganair. This gives student status to candidates on the modular ATPL course and provides funding towards the cost of obtaining a commercial pilot licence. This is a huge step forward in pilot training and Tayside are the only school in the UK offering this modular fixed wing program.
