As a result, this thesis is mainly concerned with the capacity of words, iterated within the archive of social media, to haunt us— both culturally and informatically. Through hauntology, this study hopes to understand a modern discourse community that is bound by an epideictic framework that specializes in the deconstruction of the individual’s ethos via the constant demonization and incitement of past, current, and possible social media expressions. The primary goal of this study is to understand how these practices function within a capitalistic framework and mirror the performativity of capital by reducing affective human interactions to that of a transaction.

  • RE-ANIMATING GHOSTS MATERIALITY and MEMORY in HAUNTOLOGICAL APPROPRIATION Abstract
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FILM AND MEDIA ARTS (2019) Vol. 4, Nº. 2 pp. 24-37 © 2019 BY-NC-ND ijfma.ulusofona.pt DOI: 10.24140/ijfma.v4.n2.02 RE-ANIMATING GHOSTS MATERIALITY AND MEMORY IN HAUNTOLOGICAL APPROPRIATION Abstract This research examines the spectrality of an- MICHAEL PETER SCHOFIELD imation and other media based on the photo- graphic trace. Using diverse examples from pop- ular culture and the author’s own investigative practice in media art, this paper looks at how ar- chival media is re-used and can be brought back to life in new moving image works, in a gesture we might call hauntological appropriation. While sampling and re-using old materials is nothing new, over the last 15 years we have seen an ongoing tendency to foreground the ghostly qualities of vintage recordings and found foot- age, and a recurrent fetishisation and simula- tion of obsolete technologies. Here we examine the philosophies and productions behind this hauntological turn and why the materiality of still and moving image media has become such a focus. We ask how that materiality effects the machines that remember for us, and how we re- use these analogue memories in digital cultures. Due to the multimodal nature of the author’s creative practice, photography, video art, doc- umentary film and animation, are interrogated here theoretically. Re-animating the ghosts of old media can reveal ontological differences between these forms, and a ghostly synergy be- tween the animated and the photographic. • Generic Artistic Strategies and Ambivalent Affect
I GENERIC ARTISTIC STRATEGIES AND AMBIVALENT AFFECT THOMAS SMITH A thesis in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Art & Design 2019 THOMAS SMITH II Surname/Family Name : Smith Given Name/s : Thomas William Abbreviation for degree as give in the University calendar : 1292 – PhD Art, Design and Media Faculty : Faculty of Art & Design School : School of Art & Design Generic Artistic Strategies and Ambivalent Thesis Title : Affect This practice-based thesis investigates how contemporary artists are using generic artistic strategies and ambivalent affect to inhabit post-digital conditions. It proposes that artists reproducing and re-performing generic post-digital aesthetics both engender and are enveloped by ambivalent affect, and that these strategies are immanently political rather than overtly critical. I argue that ambivalent artworks secede from requirements for newness and innovation, and the exploitation of creative labour that are a feature of post-digital environments. Drawing on Sianne Ngai’s affect theory and Paolo Virno’s post-Fordist thinking, I summarise contemporary conditions for creativity as a ‘general intellect of the post-digital’; proposing that artists’ and workers’ relations with this mode of production are necessarily ambivalent. Throughout this research I produced several performance and video works that exemplify this ambivalence. These works reproduce standardised electronic music, stock imagery and PowerPoint presentations, alongside re-performances of digital labour such as online shopping, image searches, and paying rent online. Through these examples I develop concepts for discussing generic aesthetics, framing them as vital to understanding post-digital conditions. I address works by other artists including Amalia Ulman’s Excellences and Perfections (2014), which I argue is neither critical nor complicit with generic post-digital routines, but rather signals affective ambivalence and a desire to secede from social media performance.

  • Ways of Feeling: the Transformation of Emotional Experience in Music
Faculty of Humanities Department of Media, Culture and Creative Arts Ways of Feeling: The Transformation of Emotional Experience in Music Listening in the Context of Digitisation Laura Glitsos This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University September 2016 Declaration To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgment has been made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signature: …………………………………………. Date: ………………………... 2 Abstract This dissertation argues that digitisation and Internet technologies are changing the emotional experience of popular music listening and explores the ways in which they may do so. I title this thesis ways of feeling to emphasise the relationship between music and affect as a product of time, place, and technological mediation. This research project is situated within the theoretical framework of affect theory. In the wake of Sara Ahmed’s work in The Cultural Politics of Emotions (2004), I approach affect in terms of “what sticks”: those contacts that leave impressions and work upon the outlines of what we delineate as the limit between I and Other. This is useful for an examination of music and affect because music can travel through the body, stick to the body and circulate around the body in ways that seem to cross the border of what is/is-not the body. I synthesise this approach with the field of somatechnics, in order to understand the body as always-already positioned in relation to the technological as well as in relation to the technosocial schema built through social and political forces.
