Over 660,000 Syrian refugees are currently registered with UNHCR in Jordan . Zaatari Camp, close to Jordan’s northern border with Syria has become emblematic of the displacement of Syrians across the Middle East following its establishment in 2012. It is home to 76,108 refugees, nearly 56% of whom are under eighteen years old. Following the signature of the partnership with the UNHCR, Peace and Sport developed sport-based programs that foster physical and emotional well-being of refugees, promote social cohesion, dialogue and social inclusion. In 2017, Peace and Sport launched the first “Live Together” program within Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. After the first three years cycle of implementation of the “Live Together” program, 2017 – 2019, Peace and Sport has developed extensive knowledge of the local context and cultural requirements in Zaatari camp. 11 LIVE TOGETHER PROGRAM CONFIDENTIAL & RESTRICTED Status – Key figures - Country: Jordan – Syrian Refugee Camp of Zaatari - Dates: Since 2017 - Objective: Implementing sporting activities within the camp focused on the transmission of values - Peace and Sport’s role: training on the P&S Methodology and coordination of all parties (training, equipment, coaches, events) - Field partners: UNHCR and Blumont (Implementation partner of UNHCR) - Sport partners: JOC, WAKO, FITEQ, ITTF - Seminars: +10 seminars organized in collaboration with International Federations since 2017 - International Federations: 3 International Federations involved daily: WAKO, ITTF, FITEQ - Coaches: 6 Coaches Working Full Time: Ali & Nesreen (WAKO), Jado & Amir (ITTF), Ahmad & Ibrahim (FITEQ) - Beneficiaries: 250 kids involved weekly LIVE TOGETHER PROGRAM CONFIDENTIAL & RESTRICTED Our Champions for Peace Emblematic figure of Kick-Boxing, he grew up in a district of Budapest where issues such as bullying, poverty and racism were constantly present, yet this did not deter him from wanting to give something back to the community. He is involved in a Bully Defense Program aiming to give confidence back to kids who faced physical and mental abuse. He says : “Sports, especially martial arts/combat sports can teach to be respectful and goal oriented, which personality traits help people to make their way in life.” Zsolt is the figurehead of the Live Together Program and the mentor of our kickboxing coaches. The youngest athlete to compete in the Athens Olympics, Aya Medany has won over 20 international medals along her career. Now that she’s a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, she shares her experience with as many people as possible. She testifies particularly about the main obstacles she has experienced during her career: reconciling sports practice and Muslim faith. She says : “The athletes have a big responsibility on their shoulders. As Champions for Peace we need to keep moving and keep our spirit.” Aya is a role-model for all the “Tiger Girls” involved in our program. 13 GREAT LAKES PROGRAM CONFIDENTIAL & RESTRICTED Background Since 2007, Peace and Sport has focused its efforts on the border region of the Ruzizi plain to use sport to strengthen inter-cultural, inter-ethnic and international dialogue between youngsters from Burundi, Rwanda and the DR Congo, symbolized by the jointly-held annual Friendship Games. The recurring tensions between countries urge us to review our strategy: this regional program cannot succeed without national results beforehand. Given our field experience and our network, Burundi will be our pilot country for the coming two years, and we will duplicate the program in the Great Lakes area (Rwanda, DRC, Tanzania, Uganda) After ten years of supporting youth centers, it appears essential to associate the educational system to all of our programs in order to improve the procedures and monitoring. The scholar environment has several advantages for Peace and Sport: ▪ A structured and structuring framework allowing a greater impact ▪ A fast roll-out capacity of the trained people at national level ▪ No human resources management (recruitment and salary management) 14 GREAT LAKES PROGRAM CONFIDENTIAL & RESTRICTED Our Champion for Peace Atlanta 1996 – Vénuste became the first and only Olympic gold medal-winner in the history of Burundi in the 5000m run. Selected favorite in the 1500m, he decided to give his place to his compatriot who wasn’t able to take part in the previous Olympics as Burundi was not part of the Olympic family yet. He says : “Sport is an excellent means of education. A good education changes our life and this is the reason why I think that sport really can change lives, especially the lives of children, therefore the whole of society” Venuste has been an active member of the Champions for Peace club since 2009 and he is the figurehead of the Friendship Games in the Great Lakes region of Africa. 15 CONFIDENTIAL & RESTRICTED The #WhiteCard campaign As a reference to the yellow and the red card in the sporting world, Peace and Sport initiated the #WhiteCard campaign in 2013 not to punish but to promote peace, especially on April 6, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. 215 million people reached by the #WhiteCard since 2013 (6 editions)
