NEW YORK, NY 300 Park Avenue South, Suite 300 In fiscal year 2016 (October 1, 2015-September 30, 2016), the Archives , NY 10010 of American Art was awarded the inaugural Don Tyson Prize from T: 212.399.5015 the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in September. The prize recognizes significant achievements in American art, as selected by a Mailing Addresses prestigious national jury of art historians and museum professionals. Our collectors traveled across the country and back again, continuing to grow our holdings. Over the course of this FEDEX/UPS fiscal year, we added 111 new collections or additions to our holdings. Archives of American Art The Latino Collecting Initiative entered its second year and featured the Smithsonian Institution acquisition of the papers of photographer Andres Serrano and artist/ 750 9th Street, NW architect Moses Ros. This year we also acquired the papers of the late Victor Building, Suite 2200 philanthropist, artist, collector, and art dealer James R. “Jimmy” Hedges Washington, DC 20001 III, and the records from his Rising Fawn Folk Art Gallery, showcasing Gallery more than 400 “outsider” artists, a term Hedges used interchangeably Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery with “self-taught” and “folk.” Located in the Smithsonian’s Donald W. Reynolds Center We continued to digitize our collections, making them available to for American Art and Portraiture anyone, anywhere, at any time, and added 190,135 new digital images 8th and F Streets, NW to our website thanks to the generosity of our supporters, among them Washington, DC 20001 The Terra Foundation for American Art. Digitization support also came Affiliated Research Centers from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, which allowed us to process Amon Carter Museum, FortIII ANNUAL Worth, REPORT TX 2013 and digitize the collections of W.G. Constable and Wilhelm Reinhold Boston Public Library, Boston, MA Valentiner. Their archives have extraordinary value for understanding the history of art history, and are now more easily available to the public through our website.

In October 2015 at the annual Archives of American Art Benefit, we honored a group of esteemed members of the American art world. Archives of American Art medals were presented to the Ford Foundation for its leadership in the “Grand Bargain” that saved the Detroit Institute of Arts, and to artist Robert Gober for his estimable body of work. William H. Truettner, Curator Emeritus at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, was awarded the Lawrence A. Flesichman Award for Scholarly Excellence in the Field of Art History.

III ANNUAL REPORT 2013 Our curatorial department put on four exhibitions at the Lawrence A. Oral histories Fleischman Gallery in Washington, DC. Little Black Books: Address recorded Books from the Archives of American Art showcased the address books 34 of influential artists, divulging important connections and relationships between artists and their colleagues, dealers, family members, and Collections friends. Robert Motherwell: A Centennial Celebration marked the processed centennial of Motherwell’s birth; the exhibition illuminated his many 104 roles in the early years of Abstract as well as the personal relationships that shaped his career and impact on the history of in the twentieth century. The exhibition was guest-curated Collections by Tim Clifford, co-author of Robert Motherwell: 100 Years (2015) acquired 111 and Robert Motherwell, and Collages: A Catalogue Raisonné, 1941–1991 (2012).

Reproduction requests fulfilled The exhibition Finding: Source Material in the Archives of American Art 371 looked at the ways in which artists find, collect, and organize sources that impact and influence their works. The show included comic strips, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks and more. Our final Linear feet of collections processed exhibition, Expanding the Legacy: New Collections on African American 1,228 Art, opened just before the close of this fiscal year and celebrated the 2016 opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian Institution. The Archives of American Art In-person visitors consulted 4,213 presented selections from recently acquired collections highlighting the containers of primary documents cultural contributions and the personal stories of African Americans in 1,607 the art world. These records reveal the ways in which artists, dealers, and scholars experienced and contended with racism, explored cultural identity and aesthetics, navigated the art market, and were shaped by— Digital files created 190,135 and helped shape—major social and political currents. Although as a unit of the Smithsonian Institution, the Archives of American Art receives federal support, each year we must secure more Sessions on the website than half our operating budget from private donors in order to make 654,643 our work possible. Among the contributions we received in fiscal year 2016 was a generous gift from Joyce Menschel toward the oral history program. In addition, Lloyd Herman, the Founding Director Emeritus of Page views on the website the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, made a 1,997,541 seed gift to the Archives to spark others to give to the important cause of raising the visibility of American studio craft within the field of American art history.

The Archives relies on the commitment of so many individuals – our tireless staff, our dedicated Board of Trustees, and individual and foundation donors. Together, you are what keeps us moving forward and growing every day. It is a joy to be able to acknowledge and thank you – for your time, advice, gifts, grants, and most of all, encouragement.
