[insert quote from The FADER’s post if there’s a good one]

“Wilson dove deep into the beats and sounds of and house to channel his positive messages of empowerment, black joy and self-expression, as well as socially conscious commentary on prison abolition, race relations and inequality in America.” — NPR Music, “6 Hip-Hop And R&B Artists To Watch In 2019”

“...Ric Wilson rose through the same creative writing program in Chicago as and , and he shares their prodigious poise.” — Pitchfork

“Wilson brings a philosopher’s perspective to his lyrics as his arrangements dance across the ‘rap-disco’ divide.” — Chicago Tribune, “Top 10 Chicago albums of 2018”

Today, Chicago-based hip-hop artist Ric Wilson presents the official video for “Yellowbrick”, premiering earlier this morning via The FADER. A standalone single released this past spring b/w “Dan Ryan Traffic”, “Yellowbrick” starts off as a mellow ode to love before bursting with energetic, soulful instrumentation. The video, directed by Eduardo Letamendi and Mauricio Reyes, jockeys between scenes of Wilson in summertime Chicago and a colorful performance at a lively party.

"I started writing ‘Yellowbrick’ three years ago about one love and finished writing it about a current one,” says Wilson. “I just wanted to make a song that sounded like it could be in a black rom-com; a song that sounded like the black love songs I grew up too. You know, Marc Dorsey, Tyrese, Jason Weaver, Tank, Ruff Endz."

“It was a real collaborative effort between Eddie and I,” explains co-director Mauricio Reyes. “Combining two different ideas that really capture the energy that Ric brings to his music, live shows and life in general. And puppets... you can never go wrong with puppets!”

“Yellowbrick”, Wilson’s first single of 2019, follows his acclaimed breakthrough EP, BANBA, released last year via Innovative Leisure to praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Noisey, Afropunk, Complex, Bandcamp, Paste, Okayplayer, Consequence of Sound, the Chicago Tribune, and more. Wilson closed out 2018 with “No Hands”, his infectious collaboration with producers Madeon and Lido.

Wilson is hard at work in the studio now, and will be sharing new music and details of his debut album soon.

This weekend, Wilson will play his first hometown shows of the year, including a set at the Pitchfork Music Festival on Saturday. His set starts at 1:45pm on the Red Stage. If you’ve seen a Ric Wilson show, you know how key the Soul Train is. At Pitchfork this year, Wilson - who at works every crowd he performs to into a Soul Train - will attempt to set the record for the longest Soul Train ever! Don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of Soul Train history!
