For full pricing breakdown including VIP packages and payment plan options visit: GovBall.com This June, Governors Ball will celebrate its eighth consecutive year as New York City’s premiere live music event, and by acclamation, one of the top music festivals in North America. “Governors Ball is New York City’s festival,” wrote Nylon following last year’s stellar event, which featured many show stopping performances including a memorable set from Childish Gambino, his only North American performance that year. “It combines the best of what this sleepless city has to offer, from food vendors to talent and downtown style.” The 2017 festival also left performers enamored as well, with Lorde proclaiming that that Governors Ball was “on some magical spiritual shit.” This summer, Founders Entertainment will continue working overtime to bring that “magical spiritual” vibe to Governors Ball patrons. The 2018 festival will feature a signature lineup of the best food NYC has to offer, craft beer and cocktail options, and the lawn games, mini golf (two unique 18 hole courses), street art, After Dark concert series, and the “only in New York” experiences “Gov Ball” has become known and loved for. The festival will also add two new 21+ areas, building upon last year’s introduction of the popular “Best Kept Secret” 21+ oasis. Governors Ball has focused on giving back to the greater New York City community since inception, and will continue that trend with the 2018 festival. Helmed by born and bred New Yorkers, Founders Entertainment will look to build upon their efforts surrounding last year’s event. In 2017, Governors Ball pumped a record-breaking $62.4 million into New York City’s economy, bringing the past four years cumulative total (2014-2017) to $185+ million dollars.     HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

    Biography Mark Ronson is an internationally renowned DJ and five-time-Grammy-Award-winning and Golden Globe-winning artist and producer. Ronson spent the first eight years of his life growing up in London, England. Having played guitar and drums from an early age, it wasn't until moving to New York City following his parents’ divorce, that he discovered DJ culture. At age 16, and already a fan of artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, Ronson began listening to mixtapes released by various hip hop DJs. Inspired, Ronson confiscated his step-father's vinyl collection and tried his hand at mixing. It was the first step in a career highlighted by work on a multi Grammy-winning album by Amy Winehouse, as well as his own Grammy-winning, global smash hit with Bruno Mars, "Uptown Funk." In the late 1990s into the early 2000s, the New York club scene was percolating with booming hip-hop and glitzy R&B. Ronson quickly earned himself a reputation through stints on the decks in downtown clubs before becoming the DJ of choice for many noteworthy parties. Hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs hired Ronson to DJ his fabled 29th birthday bash. These and other high-profile gigs boosted Ronson's profile and connected him with other artists, many of whom were interested in collaborating. His first production gig came from British soul singer Nikka Costa and he found that his experience of working a club crowd informed his production skills. Fusing his eclectic turntable skills with his knowledge of musical instruments and songwriting, Ronson soon embarked on his first solo record.

    uk music video awards 18 ten years on from the very first uk music video awards, it’s been exciting to see entries coming in from all around the globe in greater numbers than ever, from regular ukmva participants, former nominees and first-time entrants. this year more than 1800 videos were submitted for judging. 400 jury members were invited to vote in round 1 and the top-voted entries were reviewed by 100 industry professionals in a series of live judging panels. the entries for the individual awards for director, new director, producer, commissioner, artist and production company, based on a body of work from the past year, were voted on by jury members. it is thanks to the participation of the jury members that the uk music video awards is a respected and valued competition. our special thanks go to our friends at the mill, bfi stephen street, and black dog films for hosting judging sessions, and to martin roker, carrie sutton, toby abbott, dan massie, barnaby laws, dan kreeger and thom trigger who chaired panels. the uk music video awards 2018 will take place at london’s legendary roundhouse on thursday 25 october. we will be presenting more than 30 awards for achievement in music video and music film, and we will be proud once again to bring together british and international music filmmaking talent for one night under one roof to celebrate the most creative, innovative and successful work of the past 12 months. we look forward to seeing you there. the ukmva team ukmva.com special thanks to the mill london for hosting the 2018 ukmva
