As the summer draws to close and the evenings become darker, senior citizens CARE can find it more difficult to enjoy themselves than in the warmer months, as the

CARE days are colder and fun events less frequent. However, there’s no reason the autumn and winter have to be any less enjoyable than, as long as you prepare a healthy and satisfying routine. Here’s a few of our tips for making the most of the colder months. Focus on your health One of the best ways of staying upbeat and positive throughout the year is making sure your health is top-notch. Good nutrition and regular exercise keeps your body strong and makes you feel more energetic and awake, as well as reducing the risk of almost every illness or ailment. Eat plenty of fruit and veg, protein-rich meat (or vegetarian alternatives) and high-quality carbohydrates. Moderate-intensity exercise such as brisk walking, water aerobics, riding a bike or even mowing the lawn are all great ways to stay physically active in your old age. Keep up with friends and family As winter draws in it can be more difficult to get around. Because of this, seniors can end up having less contact with others, which can breed feelings of loneliness and isolation. To combat these feelings, why not take up a new hobby, join a club or society, or catch up with old friends that you might not have seen for a while. Family members who are more able to get around should obviously make an extra effort during the winter months as well, so make sure you keep in contact. Taking up a new hobby also keeps your brain sharp and gives you feelings of accomplishment and reward that are fantastic for those who have retired from their careers.

If you’re looking to join a club or society or start a new activity or hobby in Oxfordshire, there’s plenty on offer. Forever Fit provide classes and clubs aimed at older people throughout the county, the County Council and district councils run lunch and coffee clubs for the elderly, and the University of the Third Age provide learning opportunities and experiences for retired and semi-retired people, not for qualifications but for the sheer joy of discovery.

For more information on fitness activities, call Oxford City Council on 01865 252720. For University of the Third Age, visit www.u3a.org.uk Keep warm It might seem obvious but not all homes are properly insulated or equipped with adequate heating equipment. Make sure your boiler is working correctly (it might be worth getting a service) and double-check how your gas bill works to make sure you’re not going to be ripped off once the winter heating bills come through. Driving tips As we all know, driving is particularly hazardous in the winter, and can be even more so for senior citizens. Whilst aging does not automatically equal loss of driving ability, it’s sensible to take precautions. Make sure your tyres aren’t worn down and your brakes are working correctly, and on a more personal note, make sure you’re still up to the job. Don’t forget that once you reach 70, you have to renew your driving licence every 3 years.
