Front Cover: Lot 362 Back Cover: Clockwise from upper left: Lots 406, 57, 293, 150 Bond # 14425383 BLACKHEATH GOLFER 1. Abbott, LemueL FrAncis. “The Blackheath Golfer”. Hand-tinted mezzotint of William Innes and caddy, engraved by Valentine Green, from the painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott. Lower margin reads: “To the Society of Goffers at Blackheath. This Plate is with just Respect. Dedicated by Their most humble Servant, Lemuel Francis Abbott.” Image size: 59.5x43.3 cm. (23½”x17”); plate impression size: 68.2x47 cm. (26¾”x18½”). Print laid down on old backing board. Second Generation Issue, printed by R. Powell of London. London: L.F. Abbott, [c. mid-1800’s] William Innes (1760-1803) was captain of the Society of Golfers at Blackheath, now known as Royal Blackheath. It was the first golf print ever published. Originally issued in black & white and later hand-tinted, it is difficult to establish the first issue, though less than 15 are known to exist. The quality of the paper leads us to believe that this was printed in the early nineteenth century, which is close to the time of the original (1790), and is thus extremely rare. The top margin has the publisher imprint of: R. Powell of London. On the verso of the old board backing, there is old clear tape on the bottom and side edges (causing some darkening, but not affecting the print), but the top edge has acid-free archival white tape (which is easy to remove). See Olman’s Guide to Golf Antiques, p. 133; and Olman & Olman’s The Encyclopedia of Golf Collectibles, pp. 145 & 150. Couple small repaired tears to top margin, occasional faint foxing to margins, slight toning to outer edges; image itself clean and bright with no wear; still a near fine issue of this early and important golfing image. (1000/1500) 2. AdAms, Herbert. The Golf House Murder. 316 pp. 18.7x12 cm. (7¼x5”), orange cloth, lettered in olive green, color pictorial dust jacket. First Edition. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, [1933] With a vibrantly illustrated front jacket panel showing the golf club house, and golfers on a green, decorated and lettered in orange, black, and blue. “As in the case in Agatha Christie’s The Murder on the Links, the body being found on a golf course, (or in this case, the club house) is the only golf connection in the story.” -Taylor, The Golf Murders, p.28-29; D&J A2420. Moderately worn edges, especially worn at spine where there are long closed tears, repaired at verso with tape; light shelf wear to volume, evidence of a removed staple from covers (and jacket panels); hinges cracked; good. (100/150) 3. AikmAn, GeorGe. A Round of the Links: Views of the Golf Greens of Scotland. Introduction by Michael Hobbs. Illustrated from etchings by George Aikman from watercolors by John Smart. 29.7x41 cm. (11¾x16¼”), green boards stamped and lettered in gilt, glassine dust jacket. Printed by the Headley Brothers. Facsimile Edition. [Kent]: [Harry Margary], [1986] Handsome plates depicting the best known Scottish golf links being played in typically bleak weather. Originally published in 1893. In a glassine dust jacket that receives no mention in Donovan & Jerris. D&J A3520. Light wear to dust jacket edges; else fine. (200/300) Page 1 RARE TAM O’SHANTER PROGRAM 4. (All-American Amateur Tournament) The $15,000 Tam O’Shanter National Open and All-American Amateur [All-American Amateur Tournament] - 1942 program, along with the pairings and starting times booklet. 50 pp. Illustrated from photographs, drawings, advertisements, etc. 27.8x21 cm. (11x8¼”), original pictorial saddle stitched wrappers. Niles, IL: Tam O’Shanter Country Club, 1942 Offering the world’s richest golf purse, this $15,000 tournament was also known as the All- American Amateur tournament. Net proceeds of the tournament went to the Army Emergency Relief fund. This wonderful and very rare program features a lovely color lithograph cover. Also included is the 4 pp. pamphlet (same size as program) that you could purchase for 15 cents. It includes the pairing and starting times, and on the final page is a score card (which is unmarked). Notables playing in this tournament included Ben Hogan, Horton Smith, Johnny Revolta, Gene Sarazen, and the winner, Byron Nelson. Program creased down center vertically, lightly rubbed extremities, rear wrapper with a few creases and short closed tears; one page with a short closed tear at edge; some penciling to score card on pg. 25 in program; the pairings/starting time pamphlet is creased in many places, with a bit of finger soiling; very good and very hard to come Lot 4 by item.
