Along with satellite rights acquisition, broadcasters are aggressively acquiring digital rights as well to spruce up their OTT content offering. Also, broadcasters are active in movie production and distribution. In this month’s content meter, we look at activity of broadcasters and OTT platforms in the movies content space. Movie production and distribution: Zee Studios released 8 movie in 2017 (7 in 2016), with successful movies like ‘Raees’ and ‘Secret Superstar’. In music label business, it was associated with relatively smaller movies vis-a-vis T-Series (leader in industry). ZEEL premiered higher number of movies released in 2017 with few blockbusters. Movies on OTT platforms: Amazon acquired highest number of movies for its OTT platform with many tail-ended movies. Netflix and Hotstar focused more on big movies. Sharp increase in ZEEL’s content inventory in FY17 and H1FY18* 20.1 16.8 ZEEL recently highlighted importance of movie content as key 13.0 11.7 11.7 pillar for growth going forward and Rs bn Rs 8.7 emphasised on its intent to ramp up 7.3 investment in movie content. It is assumed that after 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which are known as 26/11, conflicts between Hindus and Muslims have escalated. Since Indian people are extreme fans of movies, especially Bollywood movies, in this regard, it is expected that media could play a significant role in increasing or alleviating the conflicts by influencing people’s attitudes and opinions. This research seeks to examine the extent and modality of the representation of Hindu-Muslim relationships in Bollywood after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The study was conducted through a content analysis of 11 Bollywood movies, which were selected from 70 Muslim-characters-based movies. Favorable, unfavorable, neutral and unclear were the four factors through which the movies’ contents were analyzed. The overall analysis of these factors indicate that 66.17% of the scenes were favorable, 14.70% were unfavorable, 2.94% were neutral, and 16.17% presented unclear images of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies.

Talking about the story, young lawyer Jagdish Tyagi aka Jolly played by Arshad Warsi is frustrated with his legal career going nowhere. He leaves Meerut and moves to Delhi in search of thriving opportunities. Easy popularity comes knocking on his door when he tries to encash some residual fame off a Land Cruiser hit and run case fashioned on the similar BMW case of Sanjeev Nanda by filing a PIL. Pitted against the very best lawyer Rajpal played by Boman Irani who shrewdly scores over Jolly by virtue of his obvious position, stature he has attained in his profession and experience, this fight isn’t an easy one. Jolly suddenly finds himself down from every side with manipulations and threats coming his way. Truth demands strength so can Jolly uncover the intricacies of the case, and fight the likes of such powerful men? What unfolds is a fascinating legal drama, harsh face offs and a strong ending.
