Page 14 J-KEM Scientifi c Toll-free: (800) 827-4849 Fax: (314) 863-6070 www.jkem.com [email protected] From the beginning, J-KEM has worked to be part of the research community, rather than Something just a supplier to the research community. That’s why J-KEM offers substantial Academic discounts on every item we sell, because we believe that supporting the next generation of researcher is part of our corporate responsibility. J-KEM’s Continuous Flow Reactor unusual continues that commitment by supplying the high quality instruments that are needed for from a scientifi c research today. At the time this catalog was printed, our continuous fl ow reactor was still in development, but even in development, its performance and features so signifi cantly exceeded instrument company those of any other fl ow reactor that we decided to provide a preview of what’s coming. Continuous Flow Reactor J-KEM’s continuous fl ow reactor can be confi gured to operate in either of two modes, reaction discovery mode or preparative synthesis mode. In discovery mode, a homogeneous mixture of reaction materials are loaded into a sample injection loop which are then injected into the fl ow reactor. The reactants fl ow through the reactor being pushed forward by a continuous stream of clean solvent. While the reactants from the fi rst injection are in the reactor, the reactants for a second injection are being measured out and mixed by a robotic workstation that both prepares reactants for injection and acts as a fraction collector for the reaction products as they elute. Up to 128 reactions can be fully automated without requiring operator intervention. In discovery mode, 50 - 100 mg of products are typically produced in each experiment.

Fully automated operation runs up to 128 unattended reactions • Prepares reactant mixtures and loads the sample loop • Controls timing of reactant injections and product collection • Program control of fl ow rate and reactor temperature

J-KEM’s continuous fl ow reactor can also be confi gured to run in preparative mode to produce gram quantities of reactants. In prep mode, the reactants are continuously pumped into the reactor in the desired ratios by adjusting the fl ow rate of the two reactant pumps. This method was used to run the reaction shown at the left, which resulted in the preparation of 1.94 g of the aryl amine during a 3.5 hour run.

Single key stroke commands provide the functionality to: · Set up a new reaction · Mix the reactants and resin · Filter & wash the resin · Cleave and collect fi nal products

The SPS reactor works by pressurizing the reactor base with nitrogen gas until it exactly offsets the pull of gravity. In this way, solvent can be added to a single reactor with none of it dropping through the frit. As reactors are sequentially fi lled, the SPS computer regulator precisely controls the fl ow of nitrogen to maintain the reactor’s back pressure to +-0.001 psi. Using nitrogen back pressure to hold solvent in the reaction tube eliminates the need for Gas coming up through mechanical valves or other mechanical devices which prevents automation of the SPS process. Reactions are the bottom frit to mixed by placing the reactor on a bench top shaker, or by increasing the pressure in the base to cause continuous promote mixing or intermittent bubbling up through the frit mixing the resin and reactants. Reaction setup, mixing, washing, and fi ltration are accomplished by a single key stroke on the computer pressure regulator. Can be combined with J-KEM’s Eclipse robot for fully automated, multi-step SPS reactions.

Connect the regulator to any vacuum pump or vacuum source and then to any piece of equipment to regulate pressure in most cases to ± 1 torr. A pressure ramp feature (standard) evacuates equipment at a user defi ned rate to eliminate bumping due to solvent degassing or over-evacuation. The vacuum regulator is ideally suited for large volume distillations, rotary evaporators and vacuum chambers. The DVR-200 is not recommended for small volume distillations or applications which involve a continuous purge with gas. These are better performed by J-KEM’s Precision Vacuum Regulator, the DVR-1000. Two Styles of Regulator to Choose From Recover > 99% of solvent DVR-200 The DVR-200 is designed for continuous vacuum sources, such as from rotary evaporators oil-fi lled vacuum pumps, aspirators, or systems that are “always on”, like in-house vacuum systems. The DVR-200 regulates pressure by opening and closing a valve that separates the vacuum DVR Pressure Solvent Time to Percent source from the system being evacuated. In most cases, the Solvent (mm Hg) Volume Dryness Recovery DVR-200 is the best choice. The DVR-280 extends the life of diaphragm pumps by not exposing the diaphragm to full vacuum A Note About Quality pressures when starting, which increases pump life by 100%. J-KEM uses the highest quality components available. For example, most vacuum controllers use a silicone fi lled vacuum transducer (because they cost less), but J-KEM uses a stainless steel diaphragm transducer. Also, rather than a standard vacuum valve NEW!! USB + with Viton seals, J-KEM uses a custom stainless steel valve with Tefl on seals. These, Free KEM-Net software. J-KEM supports three serial communications standards: USB, RS-232, and RS-485. Each has advantages and limitations.

J-KEM USB This is the standard port on 200-Series temperature controllers and the Digital Vacuum Regulator. Controllers connect to the PC’s USB ports or a USB hub. The advantage of USB is that it’s present on all PCs and supports connecting multiple controllers to a single PC. The only limitation of USB is that cable lengths cannot be longer than 15 feet without using a USB extender (offered below).

RS-232 A hardware RS-232 port is available, but usually not needed. J-KEM’s USB port includes a virtual RS-232 port driver that operates with software utilizing RS-232 communications.

RS-485 has the unique advantage that cable lengths between the instrument and PC can be as long as 4000 feet. For lab USB to RS485 arrangements that require long cable runs, RS-485 is a valuable converter alternative. Contact J-KEM for ordering assistance. J-KEM’s KEM-Comm software is required for RS-485 communications.
