National Education & Learning Summit 2019 25 APRIL 2019 KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA National Education & Learning Summit 2019 Education & Learning in a Fast-Changing & Disruptive World Opening Keynote Address YB Senator Waytha Moorthy A/L Ponnusamy Minister at Prime Minister’s Department (Minister of National Unity and Social Wellbeing) Special Keynote Address YB Pn. Teo Nie Ching (Invited) Deputy Minister of Education Malaysia About the Summit The learning space has been experiencing changes from affects in its external environment relating to the level of preparedness for the future workplace, constant changes in education policies, and even the change in family values. These rapid changes, though often well intended, has led to unintended effects towards the quality of education. Yet, the world is quickly moving on, with the arrival of the 4th Industrial Revolution, Malaysia’s education sector must reform quickly to prepare itself to be compatible with a world where technology is at the forefront and competency in mastering this can determine the level of competitiveness of the nation. Yet at the same time, this impact of abundant and ever- changing technology which has frequently dominated conversations in and about modern society, where technology integration and emphasis of the disciplines most closely associated with modern technologies (i.e., science, math, and engineering) are seen as vital. These are important considerations, but 21st century teaching and learning goes beyond technology integration and STEM content; it is also about fostering ways of thinking and promoting dispositions that support success in an age driven by rapidly changing and expanding technologies. Responsive 21st century teaching and caregiving requires educators to create environments and provide experiences that encourage exploration and inquiry, and nurture creativity and curiosity. The National Education & Learning Summit brings together education experts, educationalists, policy makers, and leaders of industry to discuss these themes to pave the way forward in an attempt to make Malaysian education truly world-class. It is a meeting of minds to discuss the critical issues and major challenges facing Malaysian education and the way forward. He was found guilty on both counts and sentenced, in 1999 and 2000 respectively, to a total of 15 years in prison. On 2 September 2004, the Federal Court quashed the conviction in the sodomy case and ordered Mr. Anwar Ibrahim’s release, as he had already served his sentence in the abuse of power case. The IPU had arrived at the conclusion that the motives for Mr. Anwar Ibrahim’s prosecution were not legal in nature and that the case had been built on a presumption of guilt; - Mr. Anwar Ibrahim was re-elected in August 2008 and May 2013 and became the de facto leader of the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (The People’s Alliance); - On 28 June 2008, Mohammed Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a former male aide in Mr.

InspectorGeneral of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic) said such a claim was baseless as the police were also subjected to the laws and regulations as enshrined in the Federal Constitu tion. "Our country can never be a police state because if we flout the laws, action will be taken against us. How can this country be a police state when we are also subjected to the laws and regula tions under the Constitution? So, are the Members of Parlia ment," he said. Khalid was speaking at a press conference after attending the 'Dialogue with IGP: Undergraduates' Role in Overcoming Na tional Security Threats' at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), here, Wednesday. He was responding to Lim's commentary in an online news portal in which he questioned whether the country had turned into a police state, claiming that Khalid was seen as someone who could not be criticised. Lim also claimed that Khalid had arrogantly warned Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching to keep mum after Teo insisted that the police in vestigate immediately the alleged threat received by Bersih 2.0 rally chairman Maria Chin Abdullah.

  • Cabinet Meeting in Kuching Nothing Extraordinary – Najib Bernama May 4, 2016
Cabinet Meeting In Kuching Nothing Extraordinary – Najib Bernama May 4, 2016 KUCHING, May 4 (Bernama) -- The Federal Cabinet meeting in Petrajaya here Wednesday is nothing extraordinary because each minister has responsibilities at the state level, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. The Prime Minister said this was different from the presence of state leaders like Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who is in Sarawak for the sole purpose of campaigning. "If the opposition wants to make this an issue, I wish to remind their leaders like Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, that he has no powers outside Penang but is here only for campaigning purposes. "Each minister has ministerial responsibilities in each state. Ministers will look into work done by their respective ministries, problems of the people, do monitoring, effectiveness of policies, and projects approved by the government," he told a press conference after chairing the weekly Federal Cabinet meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia (the Sarawak state secretariat building). The Prime Minister said the purpose of holding the meeting here was to show support for and symbolise the close ties with Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and the state government led by Sarawak Barisan Nasional. He also said having Federal Cabinet meetings outside Putrajaya was done from time to time. Also present at the press conference were Adenan, and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Najib said the federal ministers were in Sarawak because they had responsibilities to ensure effectiveness of the delivery system of their ministries in each state. The last Cabinet meeting held outside Putrajaya was in 2011 in Kuantan, Pahang.

February 11, 2016 The Honorable Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States of America The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, As members of parliament from Southeast Asia, dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, we write to express our desire for you to make discussion of human rights and the democratic aspirations of the people of ASEAN a priority during the upcoming summit at the Sunnylands estate in California on 15-16 February 2016. As you are surely aware, democracy is struggling in Southeast Asia. Many countries in our region have taken dramatic steps backward in the past two years. While Southeast Asia appeared to be on the cusp of a genuine political transformation only a few years ago, more recently the region has instead witnessed military takeovers, the rollback of fundamental rights, intensifying government-sponsored discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, and the increasing persecution of activists and opposition voices, including fellow parliamentarians. These setbacks constitute a fundamental threat to the future of the ASEAN Community and the US relationship with it. While we recognize and understand your administration’s desire to strengthen trade and security cooperation with Southeast Asian governments, we urge you to proceed with caution. Human rights, democracy, and basic dignity cannot take a backseat to economic or security prerogatives. Open dialogue on fundamental political and rights-based questions is vital to ensuring the sustainability of bilateral relationships and promoting broad-based benefits of trans-Pacific cooperation. When you sit down with ASEAN leaders in California, we urge you to press them on unfulfilled human rights commitments and to directly raise specific concerns with them.

Such action is long overdue. Burma’s military regime has carried out brutal attacks on its own people for decades. According to the Thailand Burma Border Consortium (TBBC), a humanitarian agency providing aid to Burmese refugees and displaced persons for 25 years, through these attacks, the regime has destroyed over 3,500 ethnic minority villages in eastern Burma since 1996. Here, at least 75,000 people were forced to leave their homes during this past year alone, and more than half a million people remain internally displaced. TBBC has described the situation in Burma as being comparable to the situation in Darfur. Furthermore, these crimes against humanity in Burma are well documented by various UN bodies, although none of them have taken effective action.
