Aid Memoir Aid Larry Hollingworth Larry
Larry Hollingworth, current visiting professor of AID MEMOIR Humanitarian Studies at Fordham University in New York City, served as head of the UNHCR’s efforts in Bosnia throughout the lengthy conflict that plagued the former Yugoslavia in the early to mid 90’s. Aid Memoir follows Larry and his UN colleagues throughout multiple efforts to provide much needed relief for besieged, isolated, and desperate communities riddled by senseless killing and aggression. The characters encountered throughout are at times thrilling, at times frightening. Larry spares no details, however troubling, and therefore shines a telling light on the reality of the situation that most will remember to have watched on their television screens. Front cover. During the Siege of Sarajevo, between 1992 and 1995, the city was repeatedly hit by mortar strikes. The craters left behind by these explosions were filled with red resin LARRY HOLLINGWORTH to commemorate the casualties of the attacks. These war memorials were given the name Sarajevo Roses, after people noted that the patterns reminded them of flowers. Today, they serve as a reminder of the bloodshed and loss of AID MEMOIR that conflict. The Sarajevo Rose on the cover HOLLINGWORTH LARRY of this book is one of the city’s most emblematic war memorials found outside the entrance of the Tunnel of Hope under the Sarajevo Airport. The Refuge Press is an independent imprint founded in 2020, with an emphasis on humanitarian and social justice issues. It publishes at least four books, and an equal number of art catalogues, per year. Our books focus on humanitarian solutions as well as personal and professional reflections on global crises. -

Hewitt and Mrs Ruth Kane Hewitt The way of arms and arts as the way of the warrior is a constant precept that needs no detailing. Keep arts at your left side, arms by your right, the two must complement each other, without one the other can not be. Hojo Code The Martello Papers This is the eighteenth in a series of security studies published over the past several years by the Queen’s University Centre for International Relations (QCIR), under the general title of the Martello Papers. “From Ottawa to Sarajevo” is a detailed, empirical examination of Canadian participation in UN peacekeeping efforts in the former Yugoslavia between 1992 and 1995, written by a US Air Force officer, Major Dawn Hewitt, who served as Visiting Defence Fellow at the Centre during the 1996-97 academic year. Peacekeeping, by all accounts, has become increasingly complex since the end- ing of the Cold War, and as Major Hewitt’s monograph reveals, nowhere have those complexities and frustrations been more apparent than in the former Yugo- slavia. -

Two and one-half years later, in December 1995, Deny Flight officially ended after an almost continuous 970-day aerial presence constituting over 100,000 aircraft sorties. In that time, NATO aircraft dropped more than 3,000 bombs while participating in combat operations for the first time in alliance history. Deny Flight’s initial mission was to enforce a UN Security Council mandated no-fly zone over Bosnia. This mission expanded in the ensuing months to include close air support when requested for UN protection forces (UNPROFOR) on the ground and to deter Serb aggression against six UN-designated safe areas. -

Introduction
INTRODUCTION The enormity of the war crimes in BosniaBHercegovina is matched only by the international community's lack of political will to intercede effectively to stop these crimes against humanity. Some of the atrocities are being carried out in full view of the world as they are taking place; details of the siege of Sarajevo, for example, including the privations suffered by its residents, and the relentless shelling and sniping that are gunning them down, have been reported and broadcast more promptly and more fully than in any other place or at any other time in history. Although this is going on in the center of Europe, the governments of powerful European countries and of the United States, and such intergovernmental bodies as the European Community (E.C.), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United Nations (U.N.) have been unable or unwilling to do no more than intermittently and, in many cases, inadequately deliver humanitarian assistance; adopt resolutions; and conduct seemingly endless and fruitless negotiations. Meanwhile, "ethnic cleansing" C which includes abuses such as deportations, confinement of civilians in detention camps, torture, rape, murder and indiscriminate bombardment of civilian communities C is apparently being completed. Helsinki Watch has been monitoring abuses in the wars in the former Yugoslavia since they began, in Slovenia and Croatia, in the summer of 1991. We have monitored abuses connected with the war in BosniaBHercegovina since its start, in April 1992. In August 1992 we published Volume One of War Crimes in BosniaBHercegovina. In issuing that report, we called on the United Nations to take appropriate steps to prevent and suppress genocide and to establish an international war crimes tribunal to try and punish those responsible for crimes against humanity in the former Yugoslavia. -
