(From left) Sandy Cheeks, SpongeBob SquarePants, Squidward, Mr. Krabs and Patrick Starfish in Nickelodeon’s "SpongeBob SquarePants" cartoon show. Photo by: Nickelodeon SpongeBob SquarePants lives in a pineapple under the sea. But he came to life in an ocean education center in California, in 1989. He was just called Bob the Sponge then. He was a sea sponge with cool black shades and a happy smile. Bob the Sponge had no arms or legs. He was a talking blob. He starred in a comic book and described life in an intertidal pool. An intertidal pool is an ocean habitat where millions of sea creatures live. Bob the Sponge's world was created by Stephen Hillenburg. He was a teacher and artist at the Orange County Marine Institute in California. Hillenburg made the comic book to teach kids about intertidal pools. The Intertidal Zone became Bikini Bottom. Hillenburg died Monday, November 26, of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is called ALS for short. ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This causes the muscles to weaken. It also takes away a person's ability to walk. Touched The Lives Of Many Students "He touched the lives of many students," said the Ocean Institute. -
Stephen Hillenburg Steven Hillenburg Was Born on August 21, 1961 And
Stephen Hillenburg Steven Hillenburg was born on August 21, 1961 and died on November 26, 2018. He was an American animator, voice actor, and marine science educator. He is best remembered for creating the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants which he also directed, produced, and wrote. It has become the fifth-longest-running American animated series. Steven was born in Lawton, Oklahoma and raised in Anaheim, California, Hillenburg became fascinated with the ocean as a child and developed an interest in art. He started his professional career in 1984, instructing marine biology, at the Orange County Marine Institute, where he wrote The Intertidal Zone, an informative comic book about tide-pool animals, which he used to educate his students. In 1989, two years after leaving teaching, Hillenburg enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts to pursue a career in animation. He was later offered a job on the Nickelodeon animated television series Rocko's Modern Life (1993–1996) after his success with The Green Beret and Wormholes (both 1992), short films that he made while studying animation. In 1994, Hillenburg began developing The Intertidal Zone characters and concepts for what became SpongeBob SquarePants. The show has aired continuously since its premiere in 1999. He also directed The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), which he originally intended to be the series finale. However, Nickelodeon wanted to produce more episodes, so Hillenburg resigned as the showrunner. He went back to making short films, with Hollywood Blvd., USA (2013). In 2015, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was released; the second film adaptation of the series, it marked Hillenburg's return to the franchise, wherein he co-wrote the story and acted as an executive producer on the project. -

Disney Channel’S That’S So Raven Is Classified in BARB As ‘Entertainment Situation Comedy US’
Children’s television output analysis 2003-2006 Publication date: 2nd October 2007 ©Ofcom Contents • Introduction • Executive summary • Children’s subgenre range • Children’s subgenre range by channel • Children’s subgenre range by daypart: PSB main channels • Appendix ©Ofcom Introduction • This annex is published as a supplement to Section 2 ‘Broadcaster Output’ of Ofcom’s report The future of children’s television programming. • It provides detail on individual channel output by children’s sub-genre for the PSB main channels, the BBC’s dedicated children’s channels, CBBC and CBeebies, and the commercial children’s channels, as well as detail on genre output by day-part for the PSB main channels. (It does not include any children’s output on other commercial generalist non-terrestrial channels, such as GMTV,ABC1, Sky One.) • This output analysis examines the genre range within children’s programming and looks at how this range has changed since 2003. It is based on the BARB Children’s genre classification only and uses the BARB subgenres of Children’s Drama, Factual, Cartoons, Light entertainment/quizzes, Pre-school and Miscellaneous. • It is important to note that the BARB genre classifications have some drawbacks: – All programme output that is targeted at children is not classified as Children’s within BARB. Some shows targeted at younger viewers, either within children’s slots on the PSB main channels or on the dedicated children’s channels are not classified as Children’s. For example, Disney Channel’s That’s so raven is classified in BARB as ‘Entertainment Situation Comedy US’. This output analysis is not based on the total output of each specific children’s channel, e.g. -
Nicole Lawrence Thesis
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Communications SASSY COWS AND MAGICAL JUJU: REPRESENTATIONS OF RACE AND ETHNICITY ON THREE NICKTOONS PROGRAMS A Thesis in Media Studies by Nicole M. Lawrence © 2012 Nicole M. Lawrence Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts December 2012 ii The thesis of Nicole M. Lawrence was reviewed and approved* by the following: Matthew P. McAllister Professor of Communications Thesis Adviser Matthew F. Jordan Associate Professor of Communications Michael Elavsky Associate Professor of Communications Marie Hardin Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT This thesis critiques programming on the children’s media channel Nicktoons for patterns of racial representation -- including the presence of stereotyping -- in characters. As research has shown that representation of ethnicity may be especially influential to children viewers, and that there are precedents for problematic racial representations in popular media, including children's media, the continued examination of patterns of racial-ethnic group member representation and stereotyping in character depictions has significant implications. Utilizing textual analysis, three Nicktoons’ programs are examined for racialized constructions of characters, including constructions with hegemonic and ethnocentric implications. The thesis argues that three programs, Back at the Barnyard, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Tak and the Power of JuJu problematically construct analogies of African Americans, Asians, and native peoples, respectively. The constructions in these Nicktoons programs typically “other” these groups when contrasted to dominant white culture -- or at least the animated stand-ins for dominant white culture -- and imply cultural hierarchies in which white culture is superior and/or the norm. -

They began working in the early 1900s, at the same time as Walt Disney, but while Disney went on to become a household name, the Fleischers are barely remembered. Our film will change this, introducing a wide national audience to a family of brothers – Max, Dave, Lou, Joe, and Charlie – who created Fleischer Studios and a roster of animated characters who reflected the rough and tumble sensibilities of their own Jewish immigrant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. “The Fleischer story involves the glory of American Jazz culture, union brawls on Broadway, gangsters, sex, and southern segregation,” says advisor Tom Sito. Advisor Jerry Beck adds, “It is a story of rags to riches – and then back to rags – leaving a legacy of iconic cinema and evergreen entertainment.” BUDGET Outright Request 600,000.00 Cost Sharing 90,000.00 Matching Request 0.00 Total Budget 690,000.00 Total NEH 600,000.00 GRANT ADMINISTRATOR Ms. -
