Shamrock Rovers 1-1 UCD AFC, Fri 19Th July 2013 Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:34 Shamrock Rovers 1-1 UCD AFC, Fri 19th July 2013 Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:34 UCD AFC matched Shamrock Rovers stride for stride to earn a 1-1 draw in Tallaght Stadium. Airtrcity League Premier Division Friday 19th July 2013 Tallaght Stadium Shamrock Rovers 1-1 UCD AFC Zayed 24' Benson 65' Josh Dolan It was a quiet and sloppy start as Tallaght. First Derek Foran gave the ball away to Robbie Benson but the midfielder couldn't find Dean Clarke with a weak through ball. Just after that Ronan Finn broke down the right without a challenge but Mark McGinley was fouled during the delivery. 1 / 4 Shamrock Rovers 1-1 UCD AFC, Fri 19th July 2013 Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:34 There wasn't much to shout about in the first 10 minutes. Shamrock Rovers passed the ball well but nothing was happening in the final third. Mark McGinley seemed to struggle in the first half as he failed to catch crosses on a number of occasions but referee Paul McLaughlin continued to blow up for soft fouls on the student's shot stopper. The first real chance came after 19 minutes as Craig Walsh made a surging run from midfield before unleashing a curling shot from 20 yards that curled narrowly wide of the hoop's goal. The Student's went one down after 24 minutes as Conor Powell's cross found Rice whose shot was fortunately deflected into the path of Zayed who slotted the ball into Mark McGinley's bottom right hand corner to make it 1-0 to Shamrock Rovers. It wasn't till 10 minutes after that there was another chance as Sean Russell gave the ball away to Stephen Rice but the hoop's midfielder shot well wide. There was some decent football played in the first half particularly by Shamrock Rovers, in particular when Sean O'Connor and Thomas Stewart combined but when it came to the final ball Stewart crossed the ball straight into the arms of McGinley. Stewart regularly caused problems for UCD's right back Gareth Matthews and after 38 minutes Stewart attempted to deliver a cross into the box but the cross came off Matthews and went out for a corner, the resulting delivery found the unmarked Ken Oman but he headed well wide of McGinley's left hand post. The student's nearly went 2 down as Rice's shot deflected off Hugh Douglas into the path of former student Ronan Finn who shot just wide of McGinley's goal. Shamrock Rovers were getting a lot of joy from set pieces, this time it was O'Connor with a corner that found Chambers on the edge of the 6 yard box. Shamrock Rovers were beginning to dominate in the closing stages of the first half, Rice found space just outside the UCD box before skipping past Douglas however Rice shot well wide. The Student's began the second half with a 3-5-2 formation and this seemed to work for the Blues as UCD were able to keep possession in midfield while the wing backs were able to 2 / 4 Shamrock Rovers 1-1 UCD AFC, Fri 19th July 2013 Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:34 trouble the rovers back 4 with some quality crosses. The student's had a chance to equalise on the hour mark as Craig Walsh picked up a loose ball in his own half before travelling the guts of 20 yards and firing just over Richard Brush's cross bar. Sean O'Connor's corners were a threat all night and after 63 minutes he found Oman in the box but the towering centre half volleyed into McGinley's arms. The Student's equalised after 65 minutes as Dean Clarke broke down the right wing before crossing for Robbie Benson who headed past Richard Brush to make it 1-1. Rovers came close to taking lead on 68 minutes as Thomas Stewart broke down the left before firing just wide of McGinley's goal. Rovers looked shaky in the second half, Robbie Benson forced the Rovers rear guard into mistakes several times in the second half. Both sides went for the win and UCD were caught on the break a couple of times as Sheppard caused trouble on the left but the quality in the final third was lacking. The Students were on the ropes late on as Mark McGinley was called on several times to pull off some impressive reflex saves to ensure a point made its way back to Belfield. • European Champions
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to the SSE Airtricity League guide to Irish clubs in European competitions ahead of the start of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League and Europa League season. This guide has all the necessary statistics and facts you will need to cover the SSE Airtricity League clubs’ journey in Europe this campaign and I’d like to thank Michael Hayes in the FAI Competitions Department for creating this guide. Each season, we all look forward to seeing our clubs compete in European competition and last season definitely didn’t disappoint. Dundalk grabbed the headlines across the continent for their exploits in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. Stephen Kenny managed his side through difficult ties against FH Hafnarfjordur and BATE Borisov to lead the Lilywhites to the UEFA Champions League play-offs against Legia Warsaw. After a valiant display in Warsaw, they were narrowly beaten on aggregate but still qualified for the Europa League group stages. Great results against AZ Alkmaar and Maccabi Tel Aviv followed and the run in Europe showed the very best of domestic Irish football. Whilst Dundalk grabbed the headlines, Cork City also enjoyed a successful run in the Europa League. Wins over Linfield and Swedish Cup winners BK Hacken set up a third qualifying round tie against Genk. They were narrowly beaten by the Belgian side who went on to reach the quarter-finals of the competition. Looking ahead to this season, it’ll be great to see Derry City back in European competition, a club with a proud tradition in European competition.

  • Shamrock Rovers and the Return to Kevin O'connor to Cork City
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to the 2019 SSE Airtricity League. It is great to have the domestic game back and this is a truly exhilarating time of the year. Last season proved to be exciting throughout the campaign as Dundalk secured the domestic double, the SSE Airtricity League and the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup in emphatic style. Stephen Kenny's proved to be the team to beat last season after a fantastic campaign as Pat Hoban led the goalscoring charts with 29 goals. The Lilywhites will have a period of adjustment though after Stephen Kenny left for the FAI to take on the Republic of Ireland Under-21 position before moving into the senior role in 2020. John Gill has gone into Dundalk to work with Vinny Perth so it will be interesting to see how the Champions get used to life without Stephen. There are a number of teams who have made some noteworthy additions during the off-season with the likes of Chris Forrester and Mikey Drennan at St. Patrick's Athletic, Aaron Drinan at Waterford, Jack Byrne at Shamrock Rovers and the return to Kevin O'Connor to Cork City. I truly believe that this will be one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory in both the Premier and First Division. Shelbourne have made some fantastic signings with Ciaran Kilduff returning to the domestic game and Paul Keegan has made the step down to the First Division with Bray Wanderers. The beauty of the First Division is that anyone of the teams could challenge like Wexford Youths did in 2015, and to see Danny Furlong back at Ferrycarrig Park should excite us all.

  • European Champions
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to the SSE Airtricity League guide to Irish clubs in European competitions ahead of the start of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League and Europa League season. As the teams from the SSE Airtricity League prepare for their games, this guide provides the necessary statistics and facts for members of the media and clubs to cover what will hopefully be a memorable adventure in Europe this campaign. I’d like to thank Michael Hayes in the FAI Competitions Department for his sterling work in putting this guide together. We have been fortunate to enjoy some terrific performances and results in European competition over the last few years and that is why hopes are high again as Cork City, Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers and Derry City get set for another journey. Last year, we saw Derry City lose out to FC Midtjylland, Cork City overcome Levadia Tallinn, Shamrock Rovers beat Stjarnan, and Dundalk push Rosenborg close over two thrilling games. The quality of football on display was incredibly encouraging and the clubs acted as terrific ambassadors for our League. The opportunity to showcase our League on the European stage is hugely important and that is why there is so much excitement ahead of the forthcoming games. Whether it is in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League, we will support our clubs all of the way. Finally, I’d like to thank the members of the media who continue to support our clubs at home and abroad in Europe. Your coverage is hugely appreciated and I hope you enjoy following our clubs in Europe in the 2018/19 season.
