European Champions CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to the SSE Airtricity League guide to Irish clubs in European competitions ahead of the start of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League and Europa League season. As the teams from the SSE Airtricity League prepare for their games, this guide provides the necessary statistics and facts for members of the media and clubs to cover what will hopefully be a memorable adventure in Europe this campaign. I’d like to thank Michael Hayes in the FAI Competitions Department for his sterling work in putting this guide together. We have been fortunate to enjoy some terrific performances and results in European competition over the last few years and that is why hopes are high again as Cork City, Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers and Derry City get set for another journey. Last year, we saw Derry City lose out to FC Midtjylland, Cork City overcome Levadia Tallinn, Shamrock Rovers beat Stjarnan, and Dundalk push Rosenborg close over two thrilling games. The quality of football on display was incredibly encouraging and the clubs acted as terrific ambassadors for our League. The opportunity to showcase our League on the European stage is hugely important and that is why there is so much excitement ahead of the forthcoming games. Whether it is in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League, we will support our clubs all of the way. Finally, I’d like to thank the members of the media who continue to support our clubs at home and abroad in Europe. Your coverage is hugely appreciated and I hope you enjoy following our clubs in Europe in the 2018/19 season. Regards, EAMON NAUGHTON Chairman SSE Airtricity League LEAGUE OF IRELAND CLUBS IN EUROPE EUROPEAN CHAMPION CLUBS’ CUP st Season Rd Club Opponents 1 H A Agg 1957-58 Pr. ASHOT ALEKSANYAN THE IMPACT OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ON THE FORMATION OF NATIONAL STATEHOOD AND POLITICAL IDENTITY Key words – Armenian Genocide, pre-genocide, post-genocide, national statehood, Armenian statehood heritage, political identity, civiliarchic elite, civilization, civic culture, Armenian diaspora, Armenian civiliarchy “Today most Armenians do not live in the Republic of Armenia. Indeed, most Armenians have deep ties to the countries where they live. Like a lot of us, many Armenians find themselves balancing their role in their new country with their historical and cultural roots. How far should they assimilate into their new countries? Does Armenian history and culture have something to offer Armenians as they live their lives now? When do historical and cultural memories create self-imposed limits on individuals?”1 Introduction The relevance of this article is determined, on the one hand, the multidimen- sionality of issues related to understanding the role of statehood and the political and legal system in the development of Armenian civilization, civic culture and identity, on the other hand - the negative impact of the long absence of national system of public administration and the devastating impact of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 on the further development of the Armenian statehood and civiliarchy. Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey was the first ever large-scale crime against humanity and human values. Taking advantage of the beginning of World War I, the Turkish authorities have organized mass murder and deportations of Armenians from their historic homeland. Genocide divided the civiliarchy of the Armenian people in three parts: before the genocide (pre-genocide), during the genocide and after the genocide (post-genocide).

  • Impact of Mergers and Acquisitions on Sport Performance of Football Clubs in the Highest Professional League in Poland

Whereas for some econo- mists (and club owners) they are just business operations aimed to improve sport and financial performance of organizations, the supporters often reject this proposition on the grounds of identity and symbol issues. Given the lack of studies devoted to consolidation operations in Polish professional sports, the paper undertakes the analysis of M & As in the highest professional football league in Poland (Ekstraklasa) since 1989 with the aim to verify their impact on sport performance of the football clubs involved. The results of this multiple case study indicate that the main motivations for M & As in the sports club context are the same as in other industries (search for specific assets, strategic considerations, profit and loss calculations). In addition, the success rate also resembles the one in other sectors: only in one case (out of four studied) the merger has led to a clear and lasting improvement of sport performance (although not an immediate one).
