Directory.indd 1 10/06/2021 15:53 editorial e wait years for our ‘big day out’ at the Aviva and then three come along at once as our remarkable 2021 European odyssey Wcontinues without a hint of stopping. Since I last scribbled in this column, we’ve had two more fantastic wins at the D4 ground, the first propelling us into the uncharted waters of a third round in European progression, and indeed a fifth and sixth game in said competition for the first time in our history. Chatting after the 3-0 win over F91 Dudelange we were of course delighted to get into the third qualifying round, despite the fact the might Premier Division of PAOK were standing in our way. Chatting then after the remarkable 2-1 1923/24, 1927/28, win over self same opposition, we were delirious. ‘Is this really happening?’ 1929/30, 1933/34, we asked as we realised we were living through a European experience 1935/36, 1974/75, previously unknown to Bohs. Six games, in the one campaign; four of those 1977/78, 2000/01, consecutive wins, which I later found out was an Irish . Absolutely 2002/03, 2008, 2009 remarkable. If the Dudelange win brought the house down, well the roar which FAI Cup greeted the second against the international-laden Greeks shattered 1927/28, 1934/35, the glass roof, and I’m sure many domestic windows around the area. Like 1969/70, 1975/76, most I reckon in the ground, I didn’t know what to do when Ali Coote 1991/1992, 2000/01, boogied the ball past the hapless ‘keeper. Usually goals are accompanied 2008 by fists in the air and a cheer. However, at times, goals of such importance and ones unexpected that carry so much weight, require a celebration League Cup of greater dynamics. Jumping in the air, fists held high and cheering isn’t 1974/75, 1978/79, 2009 enough. The brain wants ‘More! More!’ in response to the sheer emotive high that’s just gone off the scale so I, like many others I observed, resorted, Setanta Cup in these times, to jumping around in circles like one who’s just realised he’s 2010 been standing barefoot on a surface of hot coals, bellowing Neanderthal war cries and pushing the larynx beyond it’s Leinster Cup limits as strangled screams escaped. 1895/95 - 2016: Ahh yessir, we could boogie... On behalf of myself, the backroom staff and of course the team, we want to thank you all and for your amazing support during our Europa welcome to Conference League qualifying rounds. the Dublin You have made this campaign so memorable for all of us and I am proud that the players have represented our club with distinction on the European stage. We are also delighted to have put a smile on so many faces after such a difficult time and that so many of you have been able to get to the games has been very special. The atmosphere, colour and noise in the Aviva has been brilliant and we will be doing everything in to ensure we have the opportunity to come back again to next week! We know It will be extremely difficult against a really talented PAOK side who have international players throughout their squad. They will also have a partisan home crowd packed into the . Another factor will be the heat which will be unlike anything we have ever experienced before. ‘This will be our toughest test We are not without hope however and we have shown that we have some qualities of our yet but it is one that we are really own with the players responding really well to looking forward to. Untitled-1 1 18/03/2021 17:54 with Stephen Lambert from the club ood evening everyone. As we go into our sixth Europa Conference League Ggame in as many weeks, it’s fabulous to think we have four wins and one draw already in the bag. It really is amazing to think we’ve won four European games on the trot, as far as I am aware this is a record for a club. Huge credit goes to the team management, coaching staff, all the back-room team, the club’s people behind the scene, and of course our players. Well done one and all. As we are all well aware we had a brilliant game and result last week in the Aviva in front of 8,000 of the best supporters any club could ever wish to have. The support from the stands has been absolutely phenomenal, and must certainly have helped the players to dig deeper and deeper. It will go down as one of our club’s best ever nights in Europe, a 2-1 victory EKEMRWXEGPYF[MXLMR½RMXIP]LMKLIVVIWSYVGIW than ourselves. Then again it is only half time in the tie and the team will have to dig even deeper to LSTIJYPP]TVSKVIWWXSXLI½REPTPE]SJJVSYRH One thing is for sure our lads will not be left wanting when it comes to commitment and effort, and I’m sure Keith and Trevor, along with our coaching staff, will have left no stone unturned to make sure they are as well prepared as they can be for the absolutely mammoth task that awaits them in what is expected to be a very hot and extremely hostile Toumba Stadium in . A mention also of our upcoming home game on Sunday next against Sligo Rovers. As we are all very aware a top three place is required if we are to relive the great European ‘The support from the nights of this season, next season. Garnering stands has been absolutely as many points as possible is essential if we are to achieve this. The result in Waterford phenomenal and must didn’t go our way last Saturday so hopefully certainly have helped the the lads can get the required result on Sunday players to dig deeper and in Dalymount Park. deeper. It is a big game, the type you dream of being involved in. We’re going to enjoy it, yes, but we are going over to try and get a result, make no mistake about it. Myself, Dawson and Andy played there before in the UEFA Youth League a couple of years back. It was very hot and they have an incredible stadium. But we can’t be mesmerised, we can’t be thinking of them. We can’t be thinking of being 2-1 up either, we have to focus on our own game on the day. We won’t be fazed by the occasion, just as we weren’t in Dublin. We are such a close squad, we love being around each other, and we will leave nothing in the tank.”

nyone who knows something about nutrition will tell you a pretty basic fact; Asomething that tastes very good can also be very bad for you. I had that thought last weekend watching the outcome of the league results. Bohemians, still the talk of the country’s footballing intelligentsia on the back of the win over PAOK, went to Waterford and came away without a goal or a point. Dundalk’s feat in earning a 2-2 draw in Holland - almost a win over Vitesse Arnhem - was forgotten about as generally speaking... they fell at home to St Pat’s. And over in Tallaght on Sunday, the sun was shining but no one was smiling as Shamrock Rovers huffed and puffed their way to a win over Longford, another injury time goal from the masters of that art. All three clubs looked as if they had a hangover from their European outings. This publication went to print before the outcome was known of Thursday’s second leg ties, so perhaps by now all three are into the playoff round and greedily eyeing up the €2.9m that’s in reach in the group stages, or maybe all three clubs have been knocked out. But Europe definitely brings woes as well as wealth. Like an ill-advised, alcohol-inspired late night Chinese takeaway, it feels good at the time but you feel it the next morning.
