RAND PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS US WINTER TOUR 2014 Performer & Production Staff Bios Michael Chack – Male Soloist & Associate Choreographer US National Bronze Medalist US National & International Team Member Michael, from New York, NY, started skating at the age of 5. When he was only 11years old he moved away from home to begin training with World & Olympic Coach, Peter Burrows. His first trip to US National Championships was at the age of 15, and by 1991 was part of the National Team in the Senior Division (when he earned a 5th-place finish at US Championships). At the Skate America International Competition later that year he landed his first triple axel in competition, and in 1993 Michael was standing on the podium when he captured the country’s bronze medal! For the next two seasons Michael was a US World Team. Over Michael’s competitive career he won numerous qualifying and international competitions including: the World University Games, the US Olympic Festival, the Norway International (twice), the Tropee De France, and the Nebelhorn Trophy (Germany). As a professional Michael has been a lead principal performer for Holiday on Ice, Broadway on Ice (National Tour), Disney on Ice (World Tour), Snoopy’s Endless Summer, and Celebration on Ice and Spellbound on Ice (Hong Kong). Michael originated the male soloist role in The Holiday Ice Spectacular 2008 and is thrilled to be rejoining the show for the 5th tour in 2014! Notably, Michael is the associate choreographer and performance director of the show in 2014. Synchronized Skating in Canada: Historical and Ethnographic Perspectives1 LESLIE HALL Abstract: Figure skating is an interdisciplinary activity, going beyond athletics and involving choreography, music, creativity, spectacle and interpretation. This ethnographic study focuses on a transnational figure skating genre called synchronized skating, performed mainly by girls and young women on teams consisting of ten to twenty skaters. Drawing on historical and ethno- graphic perspectives, the author examines local and national practices with an emphasis on how synchronized skating embodies musical, social and political synergies. or many people born in Canada, skating is part of childhood. Whether Fdone in a rural or urban setting, outdoors or indoors, skating is often a family activity. The Canadian cities of Ottawa and Winnipeg boast the long- est outdoor skating rinks in the world. In February 2006 the “Great Skate,” a fund-raising event for underprivileged children, took place across Canada in 230 locations, including ponds, rivers and skating rinks. More than sev- enty thousand participants skated to raise money to support children whose families could not afford recreational activities. Canada has achieved inter- national figure skating recognition, producing Kurt Browning, four-time Men’s World Champion, and Olympic Gold medallists Jamie Salé, David Pelletier, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, among others. Figure skating is interdisciplinary and “falls between the cracks” of scholarly research. It goes beyond athletics because it involves music, chore- ography, creativity, spectacle and interpretation. Some recent ethnographic studies have focussed on the “athletics versus aesthetics” debate that sepa- rates “pure sports” from sports that have a performing arts component (see Grindstaff and West 2006, and Picart 2006). -

ISU EUROPEAN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS® 2010 January 19 – 24, 2010 – Tallinn / Estonia MEDIA GUIDE General Information Official ISU Sponsors ISU EUROPEAN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS® 2010 January 19 – 24, 2010 – Tallinn / Estonia MEDIA GUIDE TO PROGRAM CONTENT ISU Figure Skating Championships consist of four events – Men’s Single Skating, Ladies’ Single Skating, Pairs Skating and Ice Dance. In Single and Pair skating all entered participants skate the Short Program. At the European Figure Skating Championships the best placed 20 Men and Ladies and 16 Pairs qualify for the final Free Skating. The Ice Dance competition starts with the Compulsory Dance, which all entered couples have to skate, the best 30 placed couples will continue the event with the Original Dance and at the European Figure Skating Championships the best 16 placed couples qualify for the final Free Dance GENERAL RULES ISU Championships are held in accordance with the International Skating Union (ISU) Regulations. The ISU Judging System used at the Figure Skating events is the one adopted by the 2004 ISU Congress. It is constructed as follows: 1. COMPETITIONS OFFICIALS Technical Panel The Technical Panel is composed of the Technical Controller, the Technical Specialist and the Assistant Technical Specialist, each one from different ISU Members (countries). A Data Operator assists them for recording purposes. An instantaneous slow-motion video replay system operated by a Replay Operator supports the Technical Panel in the identification of the performed elements. - The Technical Specialist, assisted by the Assistant Technical Specialist, identifies and calls the performed elements and the specific Levels of Difficulty of certain performed elements (e.g. -
