ECB Yorkshire South Premier League www.yspl.co.uk Newsletter – 3 August 2017 Last weekend On a day when we did well to get five games on after Friday’s rain, damp conditions militated against high scoring. Leaders Wakefield Thornes gained a nine-wicket win over a weakened Sheffield & Phoenix side to retain their eight- point lead at the top of the table. Sheffield Collegiate’s game against Appleby Frodingham started late due to the wet outfield, but the home side then restricted Appleby Frodingham to just under three runs an over and gained a comfortable win that keeps them right in contention at the top. Wickersley, who have now won their last four games, beat Whitley Hall convincingly at Baxter Field to move into fourth place. Home skipper Alex Fletcher made his top YSPL score, but his side have now won only once in five games and are now 18 points adrift of the top two. Barnsley won the key relegation battle at Shaw Lane, with Harpreet Singh Bhatia making full use of the conditions in a 6-22 opening spell that put Tickhill’s innings in deep trouble. But Tickhill are a better team than their league position suggests and they fought back spiritedly to make the home side fight all the way for their win. Aston Hall gained a convincing, and much needed, win over Treeton, with Adam Burgess and Josh Coulson leading the way; whilst a very wet outfield prevented any play at Hallam. Barnsley Woolley Miners v Tickhill Tickhill 159 (49.3 overs) James Doyle 48, Harpreet Singh Bhatia 6-22 Barnsley WM 160-5 (44.3) James Stuart 3-49 Barnsley WM (12pts) beat Tickhill (0pts) by 5 wickets Hallam v Cleethorpes No play possible due to wet ground conditions (4pts each) Sheffield & Phoenix United v Wakefield Thornes Sheffield & Phoenix Utd 60 (19.5) Faisal Irfan 4-19, Mahmood Rasool 3-6 Wakefield Thornes 64-1 (9.1) Wakefield Thornes (12pts) beat Sheffield & Phoenix United (0pts) by 9 wickets Sheffield Collegiate v Appleby Frodingham Appleby Frodingham 101-8 (34) Billy Root 3-31 Sheffield Collegiate 102-4 (24) Tom Rowley 41 Sheffield Collegiate (12pts) beat Appleby Frodingham (0pts) by 6 wickets (34 overs per side) Treeton v Aston Hall Aston Hall 175 (48.2) Adam Burgess 67, Tim Shaw 43 Treeton 95 (43.4) Josh Coulson 6-14 Aston Hall (12pts) beat Treeton (0pts) by 80 runs Whitley Hall v Wickersley Old Village Whitley Hall 177 (44.2) Alex Fletcher 86, Umaid Asif 5-53 Wickersley OV 178-6 (30.2) Dave Rodgers 45, Shahj Younis 35, Greig Batty 4-62 Wickersley OV (12pts) beat Whitley Hall (0pts) by 4 wickets Sunday’s area final of the ECB t20 competition, in which Sheffield Collegiate are representing our league, was postponed due to wet ground conditions and will now be played at Welbeck CC this coming Sunday, 6th August. Their nearest challengers, Sheffield Collegiate, face a tricky trip to Northfield Lane where they will face a rejuvenated Wickersley side. Whitley Hall will be seeking to arrest their recent slide when they visit a Treeton side who themselves have struggled due to injuries in the last few weeks. If Tickhill can beat Hallam they will give themselves a chance of climbing out of 11th place in the next few weeks; there is an interesting-looking game at Green Lane, where Cleethorpes are the visitors, with both sides will be hoping to keep clear of the relegstion zone; and Barnsley will look to carry on their recent improved form at home to Sheffield & Phoenix. On Sunday, Wickersley carry the League’s hopes in the semi-finals of the Rudgate Brewery Trophy, whilst Sheffield Collegiate will hope for better fortune with the weather in the area t20 finals. We wish both clubs the very best of luck.
