ECB Yorkshire South Premier League www.yspl.co.uk Newsletter – 24 August 2017 Sheffield & Phoenix United CC The Yorkshire South Premier League are very sorry to announce that, following the notification by Sheffield & Phoenix United that they would concede the game against Tickhill this weekend, the club are now suspended from playing in the League for the remainder of the season. This decision has been taken to remove any uncertainty about the remaining games, and takes into account the League’s responsibility of due care towards players and officials. All points earned from, and performances in, Sheffield & Phoenix fixtures will stand. The League’s emergency sub- committee reached this decision taking into account the fact that only three games remain to be played, and the disproportionate disruption that would result from the alternative course of action at this stage of the season. There is precedent in other leagues for this decision, and the League will propose at the AGM a new rule to cover the action that will be taken if this unfortunate situation arises in the future. 12 points will be awarded to the opposition in each of Sheffield & Phoenix’s three remaining games - unless all other YSPL games in South Yorkshire that day are cancelled or abandoned due to weather conditions. If this latter situation does arise, the opposition will be awarded four points only, in order that they do not gain any unfair advantage. But if a result is achieved in even one YSPL game in South Yorkshire, the full 12 points will be awarded. The League are very aware of the extraordinary difficulties that have been faced by the Sheffield & Phoenix club during the season, and in particular over the last few weeks. We would like to place on record our thanks for the efforts made by the chairman, Michael Heseltine, his son Jacob, and Matthew Rees to keep the team going at this very difficult time. We will continue to support Michael in his talks about the future of the club in the coming weeks. Last Saturday Wakefield Thornes maintained their 20-point lead at the top of the league with an 11-run win over Cleethorpes in an entertaining game at Chichester Road. The visitors posted a daunting 289-5, led by Jared Warner and David Toft, who in the process become the first batsman to score 1,500 runs in the league. But the home side, with Bill Kirby and Alex Osmond in fine form, gave them a real scare, and they fell only 11 runs short in the end. Challengers Sheffield Collegiate were indebted to Billy Root whose fine all-round performance was crucial in securing them a four-wicket DLS victory at Tickhill. On behalf of everyone in the SYSCL, we congratulate Billy Root on the news of his professional contract with Nottinghamshire CCC this week. The home side put up a spirited performance but are looking increasingly likely to drop back into the SYSCL Championship next season. Elsewhere, Whitley Hall in third place maintained their four-point lead over Wickersley with a comprehensive win over Appleby Frodingham – Neil Longhurst leading the way with bat and ball. Wickersley had a comfortable win over the depleted Sheffield & Phoenix side; whilst Barnsley’s comprehensive win at Treeton was a vital step towards ensuring their place in the YSPL next season – Jon Trower scoring 49 on his return to action after missing most of the season with a bad leg injury. Humphrey Emery had an outstanding game in Hallam’s first win in four games, following up his first innings 52 with 7-39 – the joint second best bowling analysis in the YSPL’s short history. Thornes themselves are at home to a Hallam side lacking several first teamers. The winner of the ‘Lincolnshire derby’ at Brumby Hall will be assured of safety; as will Barnsley if they beat Whitley Hall at Shaw Lane. Only pride is at stake in the game between Wickersley and Treeton, but that in itself will ensure a competitive game!
