Man-of-the-match Azeem Rafiq proved the difference between the sides, rescuing the visitors from 24-3 with a fine 103, and then taking 3-45 in 15 overs to put the brake on the home side’s response. After ending Neil Longhurst’s resistance, Josh Varley completed the job for the visitors with 5-37. Wakefield Thornes’ crushing win over Wickersley left them just 16 points behind the leaders and these three look destined to fight it out for the title. Hallam took advantage of Treeton’s slip-up at home to Cleethorpes to move up to fourth with a comfortable win over Sheffield & Phoenix; whilst Barnsley slipped into the bottom two after losing out to Appleby Frodingham in a very tight finish at Brumby Hall. ECB Yorkshire South Premier League www.yspl.co.uk Newsletter – 24 August 2017 Sheffield & Phoenix United CC The Yorkshire South Premier League are very sorry to announce that, following the notification by Sheffield & Phoenix United that they would concede the game against Tickhill this weekend, the club are now suspended from playing in the League for the remainder of the season. This decision has been taken to remove any uncertainty about the remaining games, and takes into account the League’s responsibility of due care towards players and officials. All points earned from, and performances in, Sheffield & Phoenix fixtures will stand. The League’s emergency sub- committee reached this decision taking into account the fact that only three games remain to be played, and the disproportionate disruption that would result from the alternative course of action at this stage of the season. There is precedent in other leagues for this decision, and the League will propose at the AGM a new rule to cover the action that will be taken if this unfortunate situation arises in the future. 12 points will be awarded to the opposition in each of Sheffield & Phoenix’s three remaining games - unless all other YSPL games in South Yorkshire that day are cancelled or abandoned due to weather conditions. If this latter situation does arise, the opposition will be awarded four points only, in order that they do not gain any unfair advantage. But if a result is achieved in even one YSPL game in South Yorkshire, the full 12 points will be awarded. The League are very aware of the extraordinary difficulties that have been faced by the Sheffield & Phoenix club during the season, and in particular over the last few weeks.

Having made 122 against Northamptonshire last week, Welsh-born Salt reached the fourth hundred of his career in the final over of the day when he collected his 12th boundary courtesy of a mis-field by Charlie Hemphrey at mid-off. Sussex have struggled to get good starts this season but Salt, who was called into England’s T20 squad earlier this month, gave the innings a solid platform by putting on 85 with Luke Wells in 15 overs. Wells (30) failed to control his hook shot when Douthwaite dug one in short then Glamorgan took three wickets in ten balls to reduce Sussex to 126 for 4. Australian leg-spinner Marnus Labuschagne picked up Harry Finch (31) and Stiaan van Zyl (0) with his first two deliveries as Finch missed a long hop and van Zyl was beaten by a googly. Timm van der Gugten then returned to the attack to bowl Laurie Evans (4) via an inside edge. But Sussex skipper Ben Brown, who also made a century last week, and Salt took Sussex into the lead with a stand of 82 in 17 overs.

Leaders Wakefield Thornes gained a nine-wicket win over a weakened Sheffield & Phoenix side to retain their eight- point lead at the top of the table. Sheffield Collegiate’s game against Appleby Frodingham started late due to the wet outfield, but the home side then restricted Appleby Frodingham to just under three runs an over and gained a comfortable win that keeps them right in contention at the top. Wickersley, who have now won their last four games, beat Whitley Hall convincingly at Baxter Field to move into fourth place. Home skipper Alex Fletcher made his top YSPL score, but his side have now won only once in five games and are now 18 points adrift of the top two. Barnsley won the key relegation battle at Shaw Lane, with Harpreet Singh Bhatia making full use of the conditions in a 6-22 opening spell that put Tickhill’s innings in deep trouble. But Tickhill are a better team than their league position suggests and they fought back spiritedly to make the home side fight all the way for their win. Aston Hall gained a convincing, and much needed, win over Treeton, with Adam Burgess and Josh Coulson leading the way; whilst a very wet outfield prevented any play at Hallam. Dear Colleague. Following on from my previous letter I just wanted to give a further update in the Spring Newsletter. Firstly, I hope you are all staying safe and not finding the Social Distancing too difficult. I have today received an update from the ECB, which has been sent to all leagues as well, explaining the decision has been made to postpone any recreational cricket until 29 May at least. Whilst this is obviously disappointing it was to be expected. The full update can be found below. Personally, I think we will be lucky to see any local cricket at all in 2020 but as I say that is my opinion only. In these unusual circumstances then our Wellbeing is of paramount importance so I would encourage all of you to contact a colleague, Wales ACO twitter page, branch chairperson or our committee if you feel the need arises and if anyone has any ideas on how we can all stay occupied then please send to me and I will arrange to add them to our Twitter page to share with all. Obviously, I will keep you all updated with any information I receive from ECB or national ACO so you are kept in the loop. With first class standard cricket facilities, a large and well equipped marquee pavilion and acres of space we have everything an aspiring young cricketer could wish for. We will ensure that whilst parents are enjoying a well earnt break from the rigours and routine of a normal school week our Coaches will ensure that your budding young cricketers receive a brilliant cricket experience. Using both hard and soft ball cricket we will develop batting bowling and fielding skills, game understanding and fundamental movement skills in a fun and challenging way. There will be an opportunity to use a bowling machine and for those with parental consent we will use mobile phone technology to analyse technique. Camp attendees will be stretched and will certainly not have trouble sleeping at the end of each day!
