For immediate release, Thursday, Jan. 27, 1994

WASHINGTON -- The problem of hunger in America and how Federal food assistance programs can better respond to people's needs in Texas and other states will be the focus of a Feb. 14 public forum in Weslaco, Texas, said U.S. Rep. Kika de la Garza, D-Texas.

The forum, organized and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Hoblitzelle Auditorium located at the Texas A&M Research Center, 2415 East Highway 83 in Weslaco.

"I am pleased USDA selected Weslaco as the site for one of its regional public forums on this national and local problem. This will be an opportunity for people in South Texas and our region to discuss the extent of the hunger problem in our communities and what current Federal programs are doing right and what needs to be changed. I look forward to hearing people's views and ideas on how Congress and the Administration can make these programs operate more effectively, including how to better fight fraud and abuse problems," said Rep. de la Garza.

The Weslaco forum is the second in a series of regional hunger forums organized by USDA on how Federal food assistance programs can be improved. Testimony will be presented by people from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and -- including recipients, program administrators, educators and advocates, etc. -- who are involved with the programs.

Rep. de la Garza will serve as the congressional host of the forum. As Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, he oversees the operation of several of USDA's food assistance programs, including the food stamp program. USDA's Assistant Secretary for Food and Consumer Services, Ellen Haas -- who administers all of USDA's domestic food assistance programs in Washington -- will moderate the three panel discussions currently scheduled.
