DE LA GARZA PICKED TO HEAD U.S. DELEGATION TO MEXICO-U.S. INTERPARLIAMENTARY MEETING

For immediate release, Tuesday, March 22, 1994

WASHINGTON -- House Agriculture Committee Chairman Kika de la Garza, D-Texas, has been selected to lead a delegation of House members who will meet with their Mexican counterparts at the annual Mexico- Interparliamentary Group meeting in April. The announcement was made by House Speaker .

This year's Interparliamentary meeting marks the first joint meeting of U.S. and Mexican lawmakers since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect. The meeting will be held April 22-25 in Huatulco, Mexico.

"Congressman de la Garza is one of our leading experts on U.S.-Mexican relations in the U.S. Congress. His leadership on U.S.-Mexico border issues and his extensive personal contacts with Mexican officials have been of tremendous benefit to our country and to the House whenever we consider legislation affecting relations with Mexico," Speaker Foley said.

Rep. de la Garza said the agenda for the 1994 meeting will focus on among other things NAFTA implementation, immigration issues, environmental concerns and border crossing improvement plans. He also intends to discuss South Texans' concerns about Mexico's current limitations on the extradition of alleged criminals and Mexico's concern with U.S. policy on capital punishment and related matters.

"I am very honored to have been selected to lead our U.S. House delegation to these very important bilateral meetings with our Mexican counterparts. Over the year the Interparliamentary sessions have helped both countries' lawmakers gain a better understanding of the other country and its policy concerns. I look forward to again participating in the Mexico-United States Interparliamentary Group meetings," Rep. de la Garza said.
