WASHINGTON -- The future of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) will be the subject of a field hearing before the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Environment, Credit, and Rural Development on Thursday, September 1, 1994 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, according to Subcommittee Chairman Tim Johnson, D-S.D. The hearing will be held jointly with the Senate Subcommittee on Agricultural Research, Conservation, Forestry and General Legislation, chaired by Sen. Tom Daschle.

The hearing will begin at 9:30 am and will be held in the Northern Room of the Ramkota Inn and Convention Center, 1400 8th Avenue NW, in Aberdeen.

Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy will appear as the lead witness for the hearing. Other members of the House Subcommittee expected to attend include Rep. of Minnesota.

"I look forward to having this important field hearing on the Mure of the CRP in South Dakota, said Chairman Johnson. ''This hearing will give South Dakotans the opportunity to hear from Secretary Espy firsthand on where he thinks the program is headed as we begin to prepare for the 1995 Farm Bill. South Dakota has realized many benefits from CRP, and I look forward to continue working with Secretary Espy, Senator Daschle and other supporters of CRP as we develop a strategy for the upcoming debate during consideration of the 1995 Farm BilL"

Chairman Johnson will also be hosting a South Dakota Agriculture Summit on the theme "A Forum on the Future of Farming and Ranching", on August 31, the day before the field hearing, during the South Dakota State Fair in Huron. Secretary Espy will give the keynote address during the lunch session of the summit. Senator Daschle and South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture Jay Swisher will also make addresses during the day long Summit.
