Nothing is more fun than putting away my telescope to stare at Athe sky and enjoy the annual Perseid meteor shower. As I watched the spectacle, I began to wonder about all the meteor observ- ing hours I have logged over the years. They must number in the thousands by now. Despite all this time watching the sky, without any distractions, I have yet to see anything I could not identify. Over the period of the maximum, hundreds of amateur astronomers all over the world were watching the sky without any optical aid other than their eyes. -

H. Urban, “Church of Scientology International” Forthcoming in: E. Asprem (ed.), Dictionary of Contemporary Esotericism Preprint manuscript of: H. Urban, “Church of Scientology International”, Dictionary of Contemporary Esotericism (ed. E. Asprem), Leiden: Brill. Archived at ContERN Repository for Self-Archiving (CRESARCH) https://contern.org/cresarch/cresarch-repository/ Jan. 23, 2019. Church of Scientology International The Church of Scientology International (CSI) is the “Mother Church” within the vast and complex array of churches, missions, corporations, publishing houses, and other entities that comprise the global Scientology network (Church of Scientology International 2018; see also àDianetics and Scientology). The original Church of Scientology was first incorporated in 1953 by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986), a prolific author of Science Fiction and fantasy stories who had also developed a new science of the mind called “Dianetics” a few years earlier in 1950 (Hubbard 1950; Urban 2010). While Dianetics had primarily been a non-religious form of self-help therapy, the Church of Scientology was presented as a specifically religious organization, with complex ideas of the human spirit (called the Thetan), the remembrance of past lives, and an elaborate “space opera” history of the universe and life on other planets (Urban 2010; Kent 1999a; Lewis 2009). At the same time, Scientology also developed a hierarchy of increasingly esoteric levels of advanced training called “Operating Thetan” (OT), in which the Scientologist learned the secret history of the universe and the human self, while at the same time acquiring an array of supernatural abilities (Hubbard 2006; Hubbard 2007; Rothstein 2009; Urban 2010, 100- 105). As Scientology grew rapidly in the 1960s and 70s, it proliferated into a vast array of different religious and secular entities, ranging from local churches and missions to drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, publishing houses, and its infamous “Celebrity Centres”. -

Origins of 21St Century Space Travel
O RIGINS of ORIGINS of 21st-Century Space Travel ASNER A History of NASA’s Decadal Planning Team and the Vision for & GARBER Space Exploration, 1999–2004 Glen R. Asner Stephen J. Garber ORIGINS of 21st-Century Space Travel A History of NASA’s Decadal Planning Team and the Vision for Space Exploration, 1999–2004 The Columbia Space Shuttle accident on 1 February 2003 presented the George W. Bush administration with difficult choices. Could NASA safely resume Shuttle flights to the International Space Station? If so, for how long? With two highly visible Shuttle trag- edies and only three operational vehicles remaining, administration officials concluded on the day of the accident that major decisions about the space pro- gram could be delayed no longer. NASA had been supporting studies and honing plans for several years in preparation for an opportu- nity to propose a new mission for the space program. As early as April 1999, NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin had established the Decadal Planning Team (DPT) to provide a forum for future Agency leaders to begin considering goals more ambitious than send- ing humans on missions to near-Earth destinations and robotic spacecraft to far-off destinations, with no relation between the two. Goldin charged DPT with devising a long-term strategy that would inte- grate the entire range of the Agency’s capabilities, in science and engineering, robotic and human space- flight, to reach destinations beyond low-Earth orbit. When the Bush administration initiated inter- agency discussions in 2003 to consider a new spaceflight strategy, NASA was prepared with tech- nical and policy options, as well as a team of individ- uals who had spent years preparing for the moment. -

December 10, 2016 Dr. Christine Johnson and Dr. Neal Ishihara 801 Mclean Drive Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284 Over the Past Year, There
CITY OF SEDRO-WOOLLEY Sedro-Woolley Municipal Building 325 Metcalf Street Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284 Phone (360) 855-9922 Fax (360) 855-9923 V .• 1. Mayor December 10, 2016 Dr. Christine Johnson and Dr. Neal Ishihara 801 McLean Drive Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284 Over the past year, there has been a great deal of disagreement between us over my proposal to collaboratively partner with the Central Skagit Library District. During that time, I have consistently encouraged all parties to stick to the issues as we discuss the merits or shortcomings of the City's proposal and any subsequent agreements arising from it. I am sorry to say, that has not always happened. Letters to the Editor and comments, both public and private, have turned from discussions on policy to personal and sometimes vicious attacks; some direct and some implied. I greatly value my relationship with our wonderful schools. Your open opposition has done much to wound me in that respect. Teachers and staff whisper their support in the hallways but they add, "It's very uncomfortable now." "Why?" I wonder. When you wrote to the Skagit Valley Herald, "Do not be deceived by the Mayor's proposal...", you painted me as a "deceptive" person. In your email of April 22, to City Council, you criticized my proposal as "likely to weaken services...especially for children..." citing your analysis of "the situation in the Sedro-Woolley School District." Christine has crossed the line between elected official and private citizen. As Mayor of our City, I am Mayor wherever I go, and whatever I say is heard in that context. -
