Its aim is to work with the Asian Church to plant indigenous churches in each people group of Asia and to pioneer churches where there is no church. OMF sends people both short-term and long-term. Hudson Taylor founded the agency in 1865 as the China Inland Mission. Serve Asia Serve Asia is the short-term mission trips programme for East Asia, for teams and individuals. But it is much more than this. Peter, a quiet and unassuming young person, got into conversation with a homeless guy using sign language, discovered he had been robbed and bought him some food. Emma and Amanda were “worship warriors” singing or praying along to iPod worship songs and helping change the oppressive spiritual atmosphere around them. Johanna got into a conversation with a Buddhist monk about Jesus and prayed for him. All these were Serve Asia workers, on a prayer team, one summer. Acts 13: 36 says “when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation”. David was the pioneer of his generation. He was a young man who knew God’s purposes and did them. He completed the taking of the land, he pioneered 24-7 worship and raised up a whole generation of Mighty Men of extraordinary faith. Today God is looking to raise up men and women like David who will seek to do God’s purposes in mission and raise up others to do the same. So Serve Asia is a long-term discipleship programme, designed to raise up and equip the next generation of missionaries, to be at the forefront of mission in East Asia and able to work and lead effectively in a rapidly changing postmodern world. We are also committed to helping raise up the next generation of leaders. What does this mean practically? Prioritising Prayer We are committed first of all to prayer, as we are simply participating in what He is already doing. This means regular team meeting for prayer and also a lifestyle of praying for all we do and at times taking time out individually or as a team to pray more into our priorities. We are praying that God will start a missions movement and do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. New relational and equipping structures We have set up number of different ways of connecting with OMF: Firstly, “Mission Cells”. These are relational communities that meet once per month to pursue a common passion of missionary endeavour and mobilising others, through fellowship, food, prayer and equipping. We are currently setting these up all over the UK, networking them together and endeavouring to resource them and encourage organic growth. We have eight at the moment and the promise of another four in just 7 months. It’s still early days, but people are now asking us if they can start one! Secondly, we help organise equipping day conferences, where people can grow and be mentored. The first one was on “Disciple Making Movements”. Thirdly, the starting of a weekend conference called “Next Generation” centred more on equipping in the four areas of spiritual growth, leadership, missions and identity/destiny. Also a worship-orientated, reflective and flexible programme that promoted hearing from God. The new structure has allowed us to feed returning Serve Asia Workers, alumni and new people rapidly into an on- going programme that is relational, equipping and releasing orientated. We are asking God to use this structure to fuel a missions movement among under 30s in the UK. Why Asia? Every year we send around 12 teams out to East Asia (80-100 people), involved in all sorts of work from children’s work, teaching English to students, church-planting, sports ministry and healthcare. Asia is of the one the most exciting areas in the world today to be doing missions work. Why? 1. The majority of the 40% unreached peoples of the world reside in Asia. Only an estimated 3-5% of all missionaries work amongst these peoples, and OMF does much pioneering work amongst the unreached. 2. There are many nations that are for the first time opening up to the Gospel. For example, Mongolia has experienced a revival in some cities since the country opened up in 1989 to the outside. Thailand is very unreached and strongly Buddhist but the younger generation is the first generation to be asking lots of questions about their faith and very open to Christianity. China is tipped to become the next world superpower and has a vibrant church in some provinces but most provinces are still low percentage Christian. In the light of China’s growing influence, this brings an urgency to bring the Gospel to there. 3. God is sending us lots of young people who he is calling to specific Asian countries at this time. God is on the move! 4. There are so many opportunities in Asia to use your gifts in creative ways that make a difference, whether it’s with sports, teaching, children’s work or healthcare. Serve Asia Missions Internship The Internship has 3 parts. The first part will be at the OMF UK office in Borough Green. The second part will be in Asia on a missions trip.
