He wanted to free the slaves. Many people in the South were not happy about this. Several Southern states left, or seceded, from the United States. They formed a new government called the Confederate States of America. They started their own army. Soon, the Southern states and the Northern states were fighting. It was a sad time for everyone. The war lasted four years. It was called the Civil War. Hundreds of thousands of men were killed. In 1863, Lincoln signed an important law. It was called the Emancipation Proclamation. This law freed all the slaves. Many black soldiers then joined the North in the fight against the South. In 1865, the war finally ended. The Southern states rejoined the United States of America. 1.
