The Beaufort Scale is used throughout the marine world and has developed over many years since it was ﬁ rst devised by Admiral Francis Beaufort in 1806. It is deﬁ ned for seamen in terms of sea state with emphasis on the observed effect of the wind, rather than the actual wind speed. 20 Water-skiing Permits are issued by Guernsey Harbours for water- skiing. The boat must have adequate insurance cover and at least two people are in the boat while towing a water-skier in order to ensure that a proper lookout is maintained at all times. Getting Around

Driving in Guernsey is a little different than anywhere in the world, with more than

100 miles of winding lanes and unique trafﬁ c rules. The ‘ﬁ lter in turn’ system is noted

by hatched yellow lines and requires drivers to take turns to pass. The speed limit is

35 mph on rural roads, 25 mph in built up areas and 15mph along Green Lanes and

Ruette Tranquilles.

Hire cars are available and there is a comprehensive bus service. The bus terminus

can be found at the south end of Town, conveniently close to the marina and the

restaurants and shops of St Peter Port.
