18 Beaufort Scale

The Beaufort Scale is used throughout the marine world and has developed over many years since it was fi rst devised by Admiral Francis Beaufort in 1806. It is defi ned for seamen in terms of sea state with emphasis on the observed effect of the wind, rather than the actual wind speed. Wave heights in the scale are for conditions in the open sea, not along the shore.
