Intel and Epic Games Launch ''$1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest'' April 3, 2008 Intel and Epic Games Launch ''$1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest'' Legendary Mod-Making Contest with More Than $1 Million in Cash and Prizes to Spark Game Development CARY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Epic Games, Inc., the award-winning developer of multimillion-selling games and the world's leading game engine, Unreal Engine 3, today announced plans to follow up the original "$1 Million Make Something Unreal Contest" with an all new competition to include esteemed sponsor Intel Corporation. Winnings exceed $1 million in value, and consist of one coveted Unreal Engine 3 license as a grand prize and other cash awards and prizes, including Intel(R) Software Development Products and Velocity Micro PCs based on the Intel(R) Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform with two Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme quad-core processors. The 2008 "$1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest" will be judged in four preliminary phases and a grand final. Judging will begin in June 2008 and will conclude, with the grand final prizes being awarded, in fall 2009. To participate, aspiring game developers create modifications ("mods") for the PC version of Unreal Tournament 3 in a wide range of categories including environments, characters, weapons, gameplay, tools, vehicles and more. Through the contest, players can unleash their creative skills, make new content and game experiences using cutting-edge game technology, and reap rewards on many different levels. The content created for this contest will be freely available to players of the PC version of Unreal Tournament 3 worldwide. "To all you aspiring game developers out there - this is your chance to get in the big leagues. We have categories for all kinds of creatively talented people including programmers, artists, 3D modelers, designers and even aspiring film directors," said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. "You get to use the same world-class Unreal Engine 3 toolset we used to create Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War. Unreal Engine 3 is used by many of the industry's leading game companies, so this is truly a chance to prove your worth and get your foot in the door of the game business while having your work potentially exposed to millions. To get mod-makers started, the collector's edition of Unreal Tournament 3 includes over 20 hours of 3D Buzz's professional-level video training materials for the Unreal Engine 3 toolset." "The '$1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest' demonstrates Intel's ongoing commitment to helping game developers harness the capabilities of the PC gaming platform," said Elliot Garbus, vice president, Software and Solutions Group, general manager, Visual Computing Software Division, Intel Corporation. "We are passionate about unleashing developers' innovation through our popular software developer tools, our Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 processor family, and high-performance platforms, like the eight core Intel(R) Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform, formerly codenamed 'Skulltrail'. Combining Intel products with the Unreal Engine modding tools provides a wonderful opportunity for aspiring developers, machinima artists, and modders to jump in and truly change the game." The last "$1 Million Make Something Unreal Contest" catapulted World War II shooter Red Orchestra to fame. Its development team, Tripwire Interactive, was awarded the grand prize, an Unreal Engine 3 license, for overall Best Mod and throughout the contest earned nearly $80,000 in cash and computer hardware prizes. Red Orchestra was later shipped to retail outlets worldwide. "A few years ago, we were just a group of fans with an idea to make a mod that we would all like to play," said Tripwire Interactive President John Gibson. "The Unreal Engine and its mod tools were perfect for the game we wanted to make, and with the hard work and determination of our team we used those tools to create Red Orchestra and win the mod competition. Winning the 'Make Something Unreal Contest' helped the Tripwire Interactive team realize our dream of founding our own development studio and bringing our game to retail. It is a real life 'Rags to Retail' story." Universities and students can participate as well. "We were pleased to be a winner in the educational category of the first contest sponsored by Epic and look forward to being part of this year's competition," said Dr. Peter Raad, founder and executive director of The Guildhall at SMU. "Unreal Engine technology has been a cornerstone of our program and has been a big part of us sending more than 180 artists, level designers and programmers since 2004 to work at more than 70 video game studios around the world." • Evolution of Gamebots Project
Evolution of GameBots project Michal Bída, Martin Černý, Jakub Gemrot, Cyril Brom Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Department of Software and Computer Science Education Malostranské nám. 2/25, Prague, Czech Republic Abstract. GameBots is a project started in early 2000s by A. N. Marshall and G. A. Kaminka. The project aims at providing researchers a real-time virtual environment testbed for their agents. GameBots utilized environment of Unreal Tournament first-person shooter game providing several scenarios for the agents. GameBots project was continued by several research groups resulting in many interesting applications. In this paper we summarize evolution of the GameBots project and contributions made since the first appearance. We focus on Pogamut GameBots branch which has been steadily developed for six years with many improvements and optimizations. 1 Introduction The intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) research community grows increasingly interested in the use of computer games as primary evaluation testbeds. The advantage of this approach is that contemporary computer games provide ready-made rich environments with many properties of the real world without exposing developers to difficulties inherent to robotics. However, the implementation of interfaces between games and research software is a repetitive, time consuming task and introduces many caveats. The GameBots (GB) project [1] aimed at solving this problem regarding a 3D first-person shooter game. In particular, the original GB provided access to the environment of the first Unreal Tournament (UT) [2] by TCP/IP text-based protocol. This allowed the researchers to directly connect agents written in high level languages to a complex virtual environment.

I am the co-founder of a game development studio that is called Digital Confectioners. Before I became a game developer, I was a registered pharmacist with a passion for game development. Roughly five years ago, I embarked on a journey to follow that passion and to reach the dream of becoming a professional game developer. I made four key decisions early on that I still follow to this day. One, I wanted to make games. Two, I need to develop strong mutual relationships. Three, I need to have strong reasons to be at conferences and never for the sake of it. Four, I should always remember that building 1 point x is going to be faster and more cost effective than trying to build 1 point 0.

  • THD203 2000 Words Essay
Design: Multimedia & Graphics 2nd year – 2010/2011 THD203 2000 Words Essay Yann ROIRAND 084285292 – bf42ra Question #25: Computer games became more available in the 1970s, and have been a growth industry ever since. Tancred Dyke-Well[s], Lead Artist at Kuju Entertainment has argued that ‘The really cool, radical looking games almost always emerge from Japan.’ (Morris & Hartas, 2003, p.101.) Would you agree with this assessment, and if so, why has Japan been so influential? Use examples to support your argument. Video Games constitute one of the pillars of the 21st century’s global popular culture. With a field of influence ranging from television to politics and sixty-five percent of American households playing video games (Fig.1), the video game industry has, over the past forty years (McCarthy, Curran & Byron 2005, p.6), risen from its original mere curiosity status to what we know it as: the current leading form of entertainment and “de facto dominant artform in the world” (Kelman 2005, p.14). And yet, interestingly, being a rather new media, it is still relatively poorly documented and generally overlooked by scholars (Kelman 2005, p.14). This essay shall attempt to do its part towards bridging the gap between academics and video games. Hopefully, it shall raise the awareness that they are now as important to our culture as mythology, literature and Fine Art have been up until now (Jenisch 2008, p.4); and thus as worthy a study topic as any other. Do most really cool, radical- looking games come from Japan and if so; why has Japan been so influential? To tackle this question, this essay shall first examine a selection of such games as well as their influences and legacies, keeping the focus on their graphical aspect.

  • Framework for Designing and Evaluating Game Achievements
Framework for Designing and Evaluating Game Achievements Juho Hamari Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, Aalto University HIIT, PO Box 19215 00076 Aalto, Finland +358 40 835 9563 [email protected] Veikko Eranti Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, Aalto University / Department of Social Research, University Of Helsinki Sociology, P.O. Box 18 00014 University of Helsinki, Finland +358 50 369 5129 [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper presents a framework for evaluating and designing game design patterns commonly called as “achievements”. The results are based on empirical studies of a variety of popular achievement systems. The results, along with the framework for analyzing and designing achievements, present two definitions of game achievements. From the perspective of the achievement system, an achievement appears as a challenge consisting of a signifying element, rewards and completion logics whose fulfilment conditions are defined through events in other systems (usually games). From the perspective of a single game, an achievement appears as an optional challenge provided by a meta-game that is independent of a single game session and yields possible reward(s). Keywords Online games, game design, game achievements, game rewards, marketing, game ontology, motivation, gamification INTRODUCTION Despite the rapid diffusion of achievements, badges and trophies into a variety of digital games and services, the phenomena around them have gained relatively little academic attention. Some industry studies have found that games with achievements generate more revenue and receive better critical reception (EEDAR 2007). A powerful example of the adoption of achievements is Microsoft’s Xbox Live platform: all games published there are required to have achievements.
