This bookcontains information about teaching primary school science inthe Northwest Territories with lessons that emphasize language. Thegoals of the unit are to (1) develop students language proficiency;(2) provide opportunities for students to use language inmany different situations and formany different purposes;(3) develop student listening,speaking, reading, writing, and thinking skills includingthe science process skills; and (4) expand student knowledge ofthe science concepts related to the sun, moon, and shadows. Followinga section on resources (picture and a sample activity, and relatedEnglish materials--magazines, lists of children's books aboutbears, teacher's resources, films, etc.), lesson plans forgrades one, two, and threeon four topics (what is light, what makes a shadow, how do shadows change, andsun, moon, and earth) are presented. Activity ideasfor science/social studies, mathematics, languagearts, music/poems/stories, art, physical education/movement, and specialactivities are suggested. Each lesson plan contains the followingsegments--exercises or activities: science concepts, Englishvocabulary, English sentence patterns, English language concepts,special materials required, concept development/languageexposure, language practice, and application. Poems, songs, and stories on this subject concludethe guide. The lessons are appropriatefor students whose first language is English as well as for students who are learning Englishas a second language. FOREWORD Parents, educators, and students themselves all recognize the importance of 1 anguage in the school curriculum. In order tohave appropriate l anguage programming, students needtohave their experiences, skills, knowledgeand, particularly, the language they bring to schoolidentified and used as the basis for theprogram. Languageprogramsshouldbegin withand build uponthese strengths. Where a chi ld is dominant in a1 anguage other than English, he should be taughtin that language. In many communities in the N.W.T., that means that the language of instruction should beInukti tut or one of the Denelanguages. Students in these communities needto gradual ly learn English as a second language. In instances where students speak a di alect of English uponschool entry, the school 'srole is to respect and makeuse of the language the students bring. The school p rog ram should also help those students extend tnei r English proficiency by learning the languageused in varied communication situations and thelanguage necessary forsuccess with the academic curriculum. The aim of language instruction, where applicable andwhere possible, is to produce bilingual students. Successful bilingual education requiresgood teaching in both languages. For many years northern educators have wrestled with the difficultiesof teaching English with inapp rop ri ate comme rci al materialsfrom the south . Teachers have been requesting assistance with how to most efficientlyand effectively teach English as a second language/di al ect . The Department of Education has determinedthat the Language Development Approach is the most suitableway to meet the needs of ESL/D students. The Department has developed these unitsfor teachers to use in their class rooms.
