Brant Hills Presbyterian Church: Sermon, January 8, 2017 Rev. Curtis Bablitz “FOLLOW THE LIGHT” People don’t usually follow stars nowadays. We used to do it all the time – sailors on ships, travelers on caravans, they could set a course by the stars above and know they were headed in the right direction, but we don’t really do that anymore. For one thing, you can’t really see the stars anymore from most populated areas, what with all the light pollution, and so we have a hard time recognizing which ones are which, which ones we can trust to follow. If you went camping as a kid, you might have learned the old trick to find the North Star – find the big dipper and follow the cup up to the little dipper and there it is – but good luck actually using the North Star to get anywhere in particular. We don’t follow stars, because now we don’t need to – why follow some twinkling little ball in the sky when you have Google Maps? Of course, Google Maps uses GPS, which depends on a whole system of satellites flying over our heads, thousands of little twinkling little balls in the sky that we follow without even thinking about it, but it’s not really the same thing. We follow satellites, not stars. So you have to give the wise men some credit for this amazing journey they went on, because even by the standards of their day, it was not an easy one. Matthew calls them the Magi, which is a Greek word that refer to Persian astrologers and intellectuals, people who lived in modern day Iran, outside of the Roman Empire. -

They opened the Kyoto Inn in 1975 and, realizing that guests needed a place to enjoy Japanese food, opened what was then called Café Mums just four years later. -

Procedures *Be sure that each person has a chance to hold and move the paper. EBe sure NOT to stand between the light source and the globe. I . Be sure that the globe has the North Pole at the top and that the equator is horizontal. 2. Hold the piece of paper between the globe and the light source so that it hangs vertically and is perpendicular to the direction the light is coming from. Hold the paper about 20 cm from the globe so that a fairly clear square of light is projected on the center of the globe. 3. Slowly move the piece of paper side to side so that the paper hangs vertically and is perpendicular to the direction the light is coming from. Do not tilt or turn the paper. Keep the patch of light along the equator. Draw and describe what happens to the shape and brightness of the light patch in different positions along the equator. Draw on the globe picture and describe in the space below. (NP = North Pole. EQ = Equator, SP = South Pole) Picture of Globe Description: Answer the following: (Use complete sentences for b and c) a. Announces: CAPRICORN ONE Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH Intrada MAF 7142 Jerry Goldsmith's score for the 1978 film Capricorn One unknowingly created a template for the next quarter-century of action scores. The cat-and-mouse chase and escape sequences afforded Goldsmith the opportunity to compose some of the most unique suspense and exciting action set-pieces of his lengthy career, not to mention the appearance of a subtly melancholy romantic theme that speaks to love tragically lost. Ten years ago, Intrada premiered the original film recordings on a limited edition CD that quickly sold out. The justifiably famous LP released at the time of the movie's debut was a re-recording made by Goldsmith, containing edited highlights, arranged and re- orchestrated by Goldsmith. Performances on the Intrada are crisper and cues have significant complex detail, including much of the electronics, which were deleted from the LP arrangement. Rather than simply re-use the master from the 2005 release, Intrada has rebuilt, reassembled and remastered the music to improve the sound, including an additional alternate not previously released. The conspiracy-thriller tells the story of a voyage to Mars. But did the astronauts ever reach their destination? In Capricorn One, a misguided attempt to save a failing space program results in a faked landing on Mars. They almost get away with it, too, until the real unmanned space capsule burns up during re-entry and the three "astronauts" find themselves facing certain execution. Jonathan Machado Professor Perera Our Moon 10/9/2019 We Never Went to the Moon by Bill Kaysing, Book Review and Summary Bill Kaysing, author of “We Never Went to the Moon” was a technical writer at Rocketdynes jet propulsion laboratory, a division of North American Aviation, from 1956-1963. His book was published in 1976 and he is regarded as a pioneer of the moon landing conspiracy. The organization of Kaysing’s book is a bit hard to follow, but follows a few common themes. I personally broke down his argument into 6 tenants: thought-provoking questions, the governments history of corruption, the landing was too big to fail, the pictures are fake, our science was not advanced enough, and the obscure Nevada location. Strange incidents and thought-provoking questions In the beginning of the book, Kaysing lists off a lot of unanswered questions that loosely support his conspiracy. Why were the astronauts quarantined when the moon is sterile? Why was astronaut training not publicized, when other aspects of their lives were? Why were the moonrocks rushed to Switzerland and what proof do we have that they were real? Why was the Apollo 6 mission much less polished compared to the next 6 missions? Just to name a few. Another situation brought up was the death of NASA whistleblower Thomas R Baron, an employee of North American Aviation. He did a 500-page report on issues of the program following the fire on pad 34, and shortly after he was killed when his car stalled in front of a train. -

Capricorn One – Il Film Siamo a Capo Kennedy, ad Houston, nel Texas: dopo 15 anni di lavoro, di calcoli e un grande dispendio di mezzi tecnici ed economici, sta per prendere il via la missione spaziale Capricorn One, diretta sul pianeta Marte. L’equipaggio è composto dal comandante di missione Charles Brubaker (l’attore James Brolin) e dai due ufficiali in seconda, Peter Willis (l’attore Sam Waterston) e John Walker (l’attore e atleta O. J. Simpson). Alla fase di lancio sono radunate le autorità, anche se il disinteresse della politica per l’epica impresa è sottolineato dal fatto che il Presidente americano non è presente ed è sostituito dal suo vice. Il responsabile di tutta la missione, il dottor James Kelloway (l’attore Hal Holbrook), che insegue da anni questo sogno, è frustrato e preoccupato. Infatti egli e pochi altri fedelissimi dell’ente spaziale sono a conoscenza del fatto che un difetto di fabbricazione di un componente essenziale della navetta può mettere a rischio l’intera missione e addirittura la vita dei tre astronauti. Ma cosa fare adesso che gli occhi e le telecamere del mondo intero sono puntati sull’imminente partenza? L’idea del dottor James Kelloway è quella di inscenare un falso decollo, un falso viaggio e un falso atterraggio su Marte, trasportando i tre astronauti in una località segreta dalla quale trasmettere i collegamenti radio fasulli e il finto ammartaggio. Sembra che la grande cospirazione sia perfetta e che vada tutto liscio, ma un incidente nella fase di rientro della capsula “vuota” sulla Terra e lo zelante ed intuitivo giornalista Robert Caulfield (l’ottimo attore Elliott Gould) porteranno, dopo lunghe peripezie, la verità a galla.
