3 Concert Review - Πσιλα Τα Χερια Natassa Theodoridou and Stelios Dionisiou

Stelios Manousakis and Voula Kosmadakis were lucky enough to be in Melbourne for the sell-out concert of Greek singing sensations Natassa Theodoridou and Stelios Dionisiou last month. They recount their experience and provide details of their interview

hen we booked our concert tickets, we were reassured that we would get value for money. As expected we had a five W course sit down meal while being entertained by the support act which was absolutely unbelievable. If I could remember their names I would tell you to look out for them in the charts in the future. Getting back to the meal, we were served by our own designated waiters and made to pay astronomical prices for simple refreshments such as AUD10.00 for a small jug of coke, while a small bottle of Whisky or Ouzo were selling for AUD150.00 (now, convert that to our useless New Zealand Dollar and you will no longer complain about the prices we pay at our Greek dances). After all the food and support acts, came what we were waiting since 9pm for, at around midnight, the stars came out and our evening took off. When we left New Zealand we expected to have Natassa Theodoridou as the highlight of the evening with Stelios Dionisiou as the added bonus, however such was not the case as Stelio Dionisiou stole the Say ‘Feta’!!!!!! show from the outset when he started with his rendition of his well known hit Psila Ta Heria, By the time the second song started people were on their feet dancing not only on the dance floor, but also on the trapezia, while by the end of the first part of the concert people had crowded the stage where the singers were, and were dancing and sharing the microphone with them. The stage was so crowded that a couple of people fell off (don’t worry, no-one was injured). Further into the evening Stelios Dionisiou and Natassa Theodoridou continued to entertain us while we all continued dancing, and the dancing continued all night while flowers were being thrown to the singers and on the stage by a flower girl (trays of flowers were being sold to tables at AUD50 each for the sole purpose of throwing them to the singers in appreciation for the evening). The show concluded at 4am after they had been on for nearly four hours non-stop, while the programme had only stated 3 hours. The AUD120 we had paid for our tickets was “Den thelo tetious filous....” money well spent!! (tickets were priced from AUD90 upwards). (NO)!!! - maybe because we don’t have the population). At the end of the night we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to personally meet with Natassa and Stelios (..and yes, if you are After interviewing Natassa Theodoridou and Stelios Dionisiou the wondering, we are now on a first name basis) where we also met with concert in which they performed in Melbourne in June 2001 at the her husband, the plastic surgeon (who needs to lay off Natassa!!!) and Elysee function centre became so much better than planned, despite their manager who was also Glykeria’s manager. I think road and visited some of their own historical sites and it was the new layer of cement that had been poured over the top of the was amazed by the way they treated them. original White Horse that gave me this impression. Trying to work out why someone would do this I located a sign that noted that the cement was required to keep the white horse from further deteriorating. During this preservation work though, the contractors not only managed to destroy what was originally there, but they also managed to add in a few extra bits. The White Horse now has what looks like a spear in its back. On further inspection you discover that this long white line into the horse’s back was more likely to have been made from the tracks of the wheelbarrows which were carrying the concrete. The same sign that noted the preservation work claimed that the white horse was of great historical importance. If indeed this was historically important, then why did the preservation work that took place simply amount to throwing a coat of paint over the top? It is amazing to think that the defacing of these two historical treasures Roman baths at Bath has been allowed to occur in the same period that England is refusing Close to where I am staying is the historical city of Bath as well as the to give back the Parthenon Marbles to Greece, with one of the reasons Westbury White Horse Monument. being that they do not believe we have the facilities to look after them. The building of these new structures will allow the public to bathe in the waters again, but would result in the baths losing their true identity as all they become is the facsade to these new structures. In my view this isn’t restoration taking place but rather modernisation. The other site I visited is the Westbury White Horse.
