US Commercial Service Market Report Venezuela
Venezuela-Franchise Industry Page 1 of 5 Venezuela-Franchise Industry Adriana Sierra October 08 Summary The Franchise industry started to develop in Venezuela in the late 80’s and achieved major success as a business model in 1997. For over a decade the franchise sector has contributed greatly to Venezuela’s economic development. Starting from about 50 franchise operations before 1997, by 2007 the number had increased to 332. The sector’s annual growth (number of stores) is estimated at 25 percent. Franchise operations in Venezuela represent $2.36 billion in sales, equaling 2.2 percent of Venezuela’s non-petroleum GDP. Venezuela ranks third in Latin America in franchising, after Brazil and Mexico. American franchises dominate international franchise operations in Venezuela, of which about 50 percent are American. In general, the franchise sector’s annual growth remains stable. However, fast food chains and gastronomy continue to grow due demographic growth and the construction of new malls and shopping centers that are key locations for different types of franchises. Market Demand Since the franchise business model was introduced in Venezuela in 1997, gastronomy and fast food have been the most appealing sectors and have adapted to the market most quickly. However, other sectors have developed at a fast pace. Fashion and clothing franchises represent an important growth area in the franchise sector. Domestic fashion manufacturing began declining in 2002, due to government restrictions on foreign currency that created obstacles to general and raw material imports. Since demand in this sector is high, the decline in the domestic industry caused growth in many fashion and clothing franchise operations. -

However, after two decades of corruption, civil unrest and widespread crime, as well as the fluctuating price of oil, Venezuela is in danger of collapse. Inflation rates in the country are projected to reach 2000 per cent. People in the capital, Caracas, are living in poor conditions and supplies of food are very scarce. The Venezuelan currency, the bolivar, has become so devalued that people have started to trade with meat. The Venezuelan government now has a new plan to bring the country back from collapse: tourists. “Tourism is the oil that never runs out,” Venezuela’s tourism minister recently said. Venezuela’s president has already started preparing for an inflow of tourists, announcing a luxury refurbishment of an outdated, state-run hotel in Caracas, which he promises to be the ‘first seven-star hotel in Venezuela’. Before its economic downturn, Venezuela was a premier holiday hotspot, due to its spectacular Caribbean coastline and the world’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls. -

Caracas, the vibrant capital city of Venezuela, is a worthy destination for U.S. travelers - NY Daily News 09/07/13 18:52 DAILY NEWS Living Caracas, the vibrant capital city of Venezuela, is a worthy destination for U.S. travelers Go for the great food at restaurants like Casa 22 and Chacao Bistro, a happening arts scene, and neighborhoods like Los Palos Grandes, Las Mercedes and Altamira BY MICHAEL KAMINER / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS PUBLISHED: SUNDAY, JULY 7, 2013, 2:00 AM UPDATED: SUNDAY, JULY 7, 2013, 2:00 AM Caracas, Venezuela: City life amid the mountains. Just a five-hour flight from New York, Caracas has near-perfect weather, plenty of culture, and terrific food. So when the chance came to visit Venezuela’s capital — at the invitation of Caraqueños I’d befriended in New York — I jumped. But many American travelers might be wary of visiting the city. Citing “serious” crime, the U.S. State Department cautions Americans about visiting Venezuela. And coverage of Hugo Chavez’s death — and subsequent elections — depicted Caracas as a dangerous place. But I was curious to see for myself whether a city once dubbed the Paris of South America lived down to its new reputation as the continent’s biggest basket case. The reality, it turns out, is more complicated. While hardships are all around, this remains a vibrantly Latin city where terrific art, food, and even fashion — not to mention superb coffee — pop up in surprising places. There’s a percolating cultural scene, and a smart http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/venezuela-vibrant-caracas-capital-idea-travelers-article-1.1389384?print Page 1 of 6 Caracas, the vibrant capital city of Venezuela, is a worthy destination for U.S. -
