As highlighted in the UN WTO 2013 report, Tourism can account for 9% of GDP (direct, indirect and induced), 1 in 11 jobs and 6% of world exports. We are all aware of amazing tourist experiences globally and the impact of the sector on the economy of countries. Karnataka needs to think big, think like a Nation-State if it is to forge ahead to realise its immense tourism potential. The State is blessed with natural and historical advantage, which coupled with a strong arts and culture ethos, can be leveraged to great advantage. If Karnataka can get its Tourism strategy (and brand promise) right and focus on promotion and excellence in providing a wholesome tourist experience, we believe that it can be among the best destinations in the world. The impact on job creation (we estimate 4.3 million over the next decade) and economic gain (Rs. 85,000 crores) is reason enough for us to pay serious attention to focus on the Tourism sector. The Government of Karnataka had set up a Tourism Vision group in Oct 2013 consisting of eminent citizens and domain specialists to advise the government on the way ahead for the Tourism sector. These ecosystems preserve the physical features, minimize soil erosion, prevents floods, recharge groundwater sources, check the flow of subsoil water and help to maintain the productivity of cultivated lands. HISTORY OF FOREST MANAGEMENT IN SHIMOGA The Western Ghats is one among the 34 global hotspots of biodiversity and it lies in the western part of peninsular India in a series of hills stretching over a distance of 1,600 km from north to south and covering an area of about 1,60,000 sq.km. It harbours very rich flora and fauna and there are records of over 4,000 species of flowering plants with 38% endemics, 330 butterflies with 11% endemics, 156 reptiles with 62% endemics, 508 birds with 4% endemics, 120 mammals with 12% endemics, 289 fishes with 41% endemics and 135 amphibians with 75% endemics (http://wgbis.ces.iisc.ernet.in/biodiversity/pubs/ces_tr/TR122/index.htm).

ABSTRACT PICTORAL ABSTRACT Introduction: Ayurveda suggests to collect the information about medicinal plants from the Vanavaasi (primitive tribes), Ajapa, Avipa (Shepherds) and Gopa (Cowheards). Traditionally the science of healing is taught from one generation to another, which others will not be aware of. Western Ghats are Rich in Flora and Fauna thus considered as one of the Hotspots of Bio-diversity in India. Methods: Hence an attempt is made in that direction to collect the information from traditional healers of a place which is amidst of Western Ghats named Thirthahalli taluk regarding the plant species, their local name, part used along with dosage of the medicinal plants used by them in treating various illness. 45 Marketing of Resorts & Homestays to Ecotourists through Websites in Coastal Karnataka: A Content Analysis Sandhya Rao* Abstract The development of IT and a remarkable growth in internet based services has resulted in an increasing number of tourists using travel based websites for their travel decisions. Internet with multimedia features enables destination marketers to target prospective tourists. Hospitality and tourism research studies have established the fact marketing characteristics and design of websites influence the traffic and level of business. For successful e-marketing, web usability is one of the important factors and developing an effective content and a well designed technology based website is essential. This article examines the websites of tourism operators to know how they utilize internet technology to market their businesses. The study focuses on the website evaluation of Coastal Karnataka resorts and homestays. Subjects investigated are the websites of resorts and hotels that are nature based or offer nature based activities to their guests in coastal Karnataka. The study used qualitative research approach conducting content analysis of the websites using Internet Site Evaluation Form to measure their usability and marketing effectiveness. The study shows that the resort and home stays in Coastal Karnataka are not effectively using their websites and internet technology to market themselves. In India there has been a revolutionary growth in smart phone sales resulting in a greater usage of internet. This growth would be benefiting tourism marketers and operators who could use internet with its multimedia features to reach out to potential travellers. It is a movement of leisure time involving movement of journey or stay at new destinations. Tourism is a complex, prismatic and dynamic phenomenon. Tourism development is essential for economic growth, political legitimation, social integration and rural development especially in developing countries like India. It receives increasing attention as a major source for employment generation. With considering the significance of tourism it becomes a need of modern society and support to practices for sustainable development. Therefore, tourism is recognized as economically crucial and environmentally friendly activity. Tourism regards as a passport to peace and promotes spiritual development both at regional and intra-regional level. Tourism in the state has sprung up in recent past though it has a long history after liberalization of the economy, transportation, telecommunication, accommodation and positive government policies.It was observed that nineteenth century aristocratic people of Europe have organized institutional travelling for the sake of educational and experimental purpose. Now-a-days, term tourist is used to travel for pleasure or education but not for financial benefits.Tourism is function of diverse natural and cultural landscapes. It assimilates into environment and culture of destination.
