MY DEAR COLVIN, From this somewhat (ahem) out of the way place, I write to say how d’ye do. It is all a swindle: I chose these isles as having the most beastly population, and they are far better, and far more civilised than we. I know one old chief Ko o amua, a great cannibal in his day, who ate his enemies even as he walked home from killing ’em, and he is a perfect gentleman and exceedingly amiable and simple minded: no fool, though. The climate is delightful; and the harbour where we lie one of the loveliest spots imaginable. Yesterday evening we had near a score natives on board; lovely parties. We have a native god; very rare now. Very rare and equally absurd to Page 1 ★ The Letters of Robert Louis Stevenson ★ view. This sort of work is not favourable to correspondence: it takes me all the little strength I have to go about and see, and then come home and note, the strangeness around us. I shouldn’t wonder if there came trouble here some day, all the same. I could name a nation that is not beloved in certain islands and it does not know it! Strange: like ourselves, perhaps, in India! Love to all and much to yourself. -

COMM"SSiC'N INTRODUCTION At the request of the Administration of French Polynesia, we nade a general investigation of fisheries in Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora in the Society Islands, and in the atolls of Takaroa and Takapoto in the Tuamotou archipelago . The above-mentioned islands were reached by seaplane or by ship, and local investigations were conducted using small boats and motorcars. The keenest interest in the survey and some very helpful encouragement was expressed by His Excellency the Governor of French Polynesia. -

78 The place of the land and the seat of the ancestors: Temporal and geographical emergence of the classic East Polynesian marae complex Paul Wallin and Reidar Solsvik Introduction ‘Marae’ is a word that has many cognates in Polynesian languages and in almost all cases it designate some type of religious site or assembly place. The morpheme can be reconstructed back to Proto Polynesia PPn* malaqe with a possible meaning as “meeting place” (POLLEX). On the Polynesian Outliers and in the island groups of Samoa and Tonga, malae is used to designate an open cleared space within or at the side of the settlement where people gather to held meetings or certain social and religious ceremonies. On some islands like Alofi, the malae has a row of upright stones or backrests at one end. On other islands, like Tokelau and Kapingamarangi, the meetings and ceremonies take place inside a house, while the general area around the house is known as malae . In most East Polynesian island groups, the main exceptions being Hawai’i and New Zealand, the word ‘marae’ refers to a particular group of ritual structures with many common architectural characteristics. It is a rectangular space with a low stone platform or enclosure at one side. On Hawai’i it is the word ‘ heiau ’ that designate religious architecture, of various design rather dissimilar to the other island groups although ceremonies taking place on these sites strongly resembles ceremonies conducted on marae sites. The Maori language use the word ‘marae’ to characterise the courtyard in front of the meeting house, or it designates, in a modern usage the whole complex of buildings and activity ground which also include the meeting house. -

The farm is located on the Tahiti Peninsula on the island of Tahiti, near the village of Tautira. Picturing Pleasure: Fanny Stevenson and Beatrice Grimshaw in the Pacific Islands
Archived version from NCDOCKS Institutional Repository http://libres.uncg.edu/ir/asu/ Picturing Pleasure: Fanny Stevenson and Beatrice Grimshaw in the Pacific Islands By: Heather Waldroup Abstract This article explores the travel writings, illustrated with photographs, of Fanny Stevenson and Beatrice Grimshaw, two 'lady travelers' who visited the Pacific Islands at the turn of the twentieth century. Although little critical attention has been paid to their books, these texts are significant contributions to the comparatively small archive ofEuro-American women's narratives of travel and encounter in the Pacific Islands from this period. Their representations of the Islands are at once conventional and unusual, and analysis of their texts adds significantly to the literature on women's travel writing, especially as the Pacific Islands are an underrepresented area in this field. Rather than producing generalized exoticist representations, their discussions of class, race, gender, and colonial politics are particular to the Pacific Islands, and illustrate various moments of contact at a key transition point in Pacific colonial history. Their use of photographs also forges a strong connection between their work and a longer history of image production by Westerners in the Pacific Islands. Using colonial history as a framework for exploration of class, race, and gender politics in the Pacific Islands, this essay argues that Stevenson and Grimshaw's works suggest ways that popular audiences may have experienced the Pacific Islands through word and image publications.
