    2019 Community Profile Union County, North Carolina Overview Established in 1842, Union County was formed from parts of Anson Coun- ty and Mecklenburg County. Its name was a compromise between Whigs, who wanted to name the new county for Henry Clay, and Democrats, who wanted to name it for Andrew Jackson. Situated in the south central Pied- mont area of North Carolina, Union County’s estimated population is 228,171, with approximately 643 square miles of land.
