CONNECTING a CONTINENT: AT&T and the Broadcast Networks
CONNECTING A CONTINENT: AT&T and the Broadcast Networks Copyright 2021 by Mark Durenberger This is a second update of the original work dated October, 2013. The most important changes include: 1) The strengthening and expanding of a good deal of factual information, including further research and follow-up on comments and suggestions offered by readers of the original work. Thank you for your input! 2) The rebuilding of drawings and the addition of illustrations and URLs to offer deeper understanding. 3) The transfer of deep technical detail to the last chapter where it becomes a technical addendum. (This should make the story easier to follow and should make it easier for those not interested in such detail…while offering deep technical detail for those who are.) 4) The original URLs pointed to an older website. These hot buttons have been repointed as of April 2021. 5) The document has been reformatted and may be easier to read. To supplement the material referenced throughout, we’re fortunate to keep turning up fresh information online. New web sites appear almost daily containing scans of the trade magazines, literature and correspondence involving the subject under scrutiny (one of the most useful is WorldRadioHistory.Com). Hopefully the changes will be useful! "Everything that once was wireless is now wired. Everything that once was wired is now wireless." - Rodney E. Nilk About four years ago, inspired by a piece by James O’Neal in Radio World Magazine I came to realize that, while many of us grew up in a broadcast industry created in part by AT&T, there’s been no easy access to the full detail of AT&T’s contributions. -

FOR THE UP AND COMING AND ALREADY ARRIVED $3 • Vol II: ISSUE 7 • APRIL 10 vbFRONT.com our Radio Story A Careful BANKRUPTCY! BUSINESSBUSINESSand the EnvironmentEnvironment A New Generation of TREE-HUGGING SUITS meta- Gwen Mason, materials Clean Valley Council WELCOME to the FRONT You have to wonder why any publication would print an “environmental issue” or, as most call it, a “green issue.” It’s counterintuitive to the degree that it points a big neon finger at the publication saying: “Polluter.” Environmental Defense has estimated that producing one ton of fresh uncoated paper (about 90 percent of the paper used in the U.S. for printing and writing) uses three tons of wood, 19,075 gallons of water, and generates 2,278 pounds of solid waste. Ink is often a water pollutant. Not so “green,” huh? With that in mind, Valley Business FRONT’s April, 2010 Environmental Issue is producing none of that waste, cutting none of those trees and not using all that water. It’s a digital issue and the carbon footprint—though not zero, since almost nothing has no impact—is minimal. This is a one-time statement for us and you’ll have that lovely little slick European-style magazine on your desk again the first week of May. But we thought we’d show you what the future looks like, a future where environmental consciousness changes some dynamics—like printing. Every month, we hear from readers, “I love the look, the feel and the smell of your magazine” and that is music to our ears. -

Adviser Department of Speech PREFACE Although commercial radio in this country was horn and managed to gather up a full head of develop mental steam in the 1920's, the mass radio medium did not reach full maturity until two decades later when American involvement in World War II pressured radio to achieve its "finest hour." Once limited to to situation comedies and soap operas, network radio offered the human drama of death, devestation, and despair to a nation at war in the 194-0's. Radio became a companion; a constant source of information and inspiration against which the print medium could not compete. This study presents a detailed investigation of . network radio's activities during the Second World War. The networks were each composed of a main sta tion in New York City and a varying number of local or affiliated stations around the country. As a limit ing factor, the contributions of such local stations, apart from their role as network disseminators, will not be discussed.
