  • SAGA COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (Exact Name of Registrant As Specified in Its Charter)
2017 Annual Report 2017 Annual Letter To our fellow shareholders: Every now and then I am introduced to someone who knows, kind of, who I am and what I do and they instinctively ask, ‘‘How are things at Saga?’’ (they pronounce it ‘‘say-gah’’). I am polite and correct their pronunciation (‘‘sah-gah’’) as I am proud of the word and its history. This is usually followed by, ‘‘What is a ‘‘sah-gah?’’ My response is that there are several definitions — a common one from 1857 deems a ‘‘Saga’’ as ‘‘a long, convoluted story.’’ The second one that we prefer is ‘‘an ongoing adventure.’’ That’s what we are. Next they ask, ‘‘What do you do there?’’ (pause, pause). I, too, pause, as by saying my title doesn’t really tell what I do or what Saga does. In essence, I tell them that I am in charge of the wellness of the Company and overseer and polisher of the multiple brands of radio stations that we have. Then comes the question, ‘‘Radio stations are brands?’’ ‘‘Yes,’’ I respond. ‘‘A consistent allusion can become a brand. Each and every one of our radio stations has a created personality that requires ongoing care. That is one of the things that differentiates us from other radio companies.’’ We really care about the identity, ambiance, and mission of each and every station that belongs to Saga. We have radio stations that have been on the air for close to 100 years and we have radio stations that have been created just months ago.

  • A Toolkit for Working with the Media
Utilizing the Media to Facilitate Social Change A Toolkit for Working with the Media WEST VIRGINIA FOUNDATION for RAPE INFORMATION and SERVICES www.fris.org 2011 Media Toolkit | 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Media Advocacy……………………………….. ……….. 3 Building a Relationship with the Media……... ……….. 3 West Virginia Media…………………………………….. 4 Tips for Working with the Media……………... ……….. 10 Letter to the Editor…………………………….. ……….. 13 Opinion Editorial (Op-Ed)…………………….. ……….. 15 Media Advisory………………………………… ……….. 17 Press/News Release………………………….. ……….. 19 Public Service Announcements……………………….. 21 Media Interviews………………………………. ……….. 22 Survivors’ Stories and the Media………………………. 23 Media Packets…………………………………. ……….. 25 Media Toolkit | 3 Media Advocacy Media advocacy can promote social change by influencing decision-makers and swaying public opinion. Organizations can use mass media outlets to change social conditions and encourage political and social intervention. When working with the media, advocates should ‘shape’ their story to incorporate social themes rather than solely focusing on individual accountability. “Develop a story that personalizes the injustice and then provide a clear picture of who is benefiting from the condition.” (Wallack et al., 1999) Merely stating that there is a problem provides no ‘call to action’ for the public. Therefore, advocates should identify a specific solution that would allow communities to take control of the issue. Sexual violence is a public health concern of social injustices. Effective Media Campaigns Local, regional or statewide campaigns can provide a forum for prevention, outreach and raising awareness to create social change. This toolkit will enhance advocates’ abilities to utilize the media for campaigns and other events. Campaigns can include: public service announcements (PSAs), awareness events (Take Back the Night; The Clothesline Project), media interviews, coordinated events at area schools or college campuses, position papers, etc.

Franklin Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 540-434-3476 Our purpose as a church is to love God and all people, Continuing enabled by the Holy Spirit to David and become the living presence of Nancy Jesus Christ in our homes, Hansbrough’s across the street, and around July Trip to the world. New Brunswick, __________________________ Prince Edward This newsletter is Island, and published monthly. Nova Scotia, Please provide Canada information to the Nancy Hansbrough editor, church secretary, by the fourth Sunday of this month. After visiting the __________________________ province of Prince Nancy at Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia Edward Island, we headed to Nova Scotia. We soon realized why Nova Scotia means “New Scotland” as we traveled through the heart of the province. Nova Scotia is Sandy Kauffman located almost exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole. It is the second smallest province in area after Prince Edward Island and the Anyone interested in joining second most densely populated province in Canada. Curves? I have a gift certificate Our first stop in Nova Scotia was Peggy’s Cove (population for 3 free months for a approximately 46), a small rural, active fishing community located on the nonmember to be used before eastern shore of St. Margaret’s Bay. Peggy’s Cove has a classic red-and- June 30, 2013. I'd love to give it white lighthouse still operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The famous to you.

  • SAGA COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (Exact Name of Registrant As Specified in Its Charter)
2016 Annual Report 2016 Annual Letter To our fellow shareholders: Well…. here we go. This letter is supposed to be my turn to tell you about Saga, but this year is a little different because it involves other people telling you about Saga. The following is a letter sent to the staff at WNOR FM 99 in Norfolk, Virginia. Directly or indirectly, I have been a part of this station for 35+ years. Let me continue this train of thought for a moment or two longer. Saga, through its stockholders, owns WHMP AM and WRSI FM in Northampton, Massachusetts. Let me share an experience that recently occurred there. Our General Manager, Dave Musante, learned about a local grocery/deli called Serio’s that has operated in Northampton for over 70 years. The 3rd generation matriarch had passed over a year ago and her son and daughter were having some difficulties with the store. Dave’s staff came up with the idea of a ‘‘cash mob’’ and went on the air asking people in the community to go to Serio’s from 3 to 5PM on Wednesday and ‘‘buy something.’’ That’s it. Zero dollars to our station. It wasn’t for our benefit. Community outpouring was ‘‘just overwhelming and inspiring’’ and the owner was emotionally overwhelmed by the community outreach. As Dave Musante said in his letter to me, ‘‘It was the right thing to do.’’ Even the local newspaper (and local newspapers never recognize radio) made the story front page above the fold. Permit me to do one or two more examples and then we will get down to business.
