Cateforis Date approved: November 30, 2015 ii Abstract This study examines contemporary artists who revisit, revise, reimagine, reclaim, and otherwise engage directly with art of the American Frontier from 1820-1920. The revision of the historic images calls attention to the myth and ideologies imbedded in the imagery. Likewise, these contemporary images are essentially a framing of western imagery informed by a system of values and interpretive strategies of the present. The re-framing of the historic West opens a dialogue that expands beyond the frame, to look at images and history from different angles. This dissertation examines twentieth- and twenty-first century artists such as the Cowboy Artists of America, Mark Klett, Tony Foster, Byron Wolfe, Stephen Hannock, Bill Schenck, and Kent Monkman alongside historic western American artists such as Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Timothy O’Sullivan, Thomas Moran, W.R. Leigh, and Albert Bierstadt. -

Cole's Course of Empire in its immersive installation When The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts an exhibition of early American art, it is by definition an important moment for our field because of the institution’s enviable success at drawing a broad audience to its shows. When that museum uses its considerable clout to gather major international loans that tell a fuller story than any previous exhibition has been able to do of the transatlantic existence of one of the most influential of American artists, it is only more so. Thomas Cole’s Journey: Atlantic Crossings marks a turning point for early American art in the popular consciousness, both at home and abroad, by challenging the nativism and conservatism that surrounds narratives of that most marketable and yet most fraught of Americanist brand names: “Hudson River School.” In so doing, it contributes to a moment of transatlantic American landscape exhibitions such as the Detroit Institute of Arts’ Frederic Church: A Painter’s Pilgrimage1 and my own institution’s recent The Rockies and the Alps: Bierstadt, Calame, and the Romance of the Mountains.2 The editors of Panorama asked me, as a nearby Cole specialist with a keen interest in this project but not a participant in it, to interview the cocurators for the benefit of the journal’s readership. -

2010 ANNUAL REPORT A New Organization is Formed Before the close of 2009, the New York State Board of Regents approved a charter establishing a new independent non-profit organization to own and operate the home of Thomas Cole. For the previous ten years, the historic site was owned by the Greene County Historical Society, which owns several other important historic properties. Thomas Cole’s home and studio will now be run by an independent non-profit organization. Although the ownership structure is new, the people that are involved remain the same. The new organization’s Board of Trustees consists of the same twelve people who were on the “Cole Committee” of the Greene County Historical Society, with the same officers including Lisa Fox Martin as Chairman. The three paid staff were retained by the Trustees to work for the new organization. The trustees and staff of Thomas Cole National Historic Site are grateful to the many people who have worked tirelessly to bring this important historic site to this milestone. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Stephen Hannock New Work November 5 – December 5, 2009 John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Stephen Hannock. New Work will be on view from November 5-December 5, 2009. John Berggruen Gallery will host a reception for the artist on Thursday, November 5 between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The opening reception will also include a signing of the artist's recently published monograph from Hudson Hills Press; a 30 year survey of work including the just completed painting, Northern City Renaissance, the culmination of a six year project with the musician Sting. New Work is a series of nocturnes that examine the unusual atmospheres that occur in the Napa Valley, often observed by locals and visitors alike, but rarely recorded; a familiar bucolic setting rendered brooding and dramatic as day turns to night, and night yields to dawn. The centerpiece of the show, Recent Adventures with Art in the Napa Valley (Mass MoCA #117), is a large (72 x 109 inches) view of the Napa Valley at dawn from an aerial perspective. Also on view are several small works created in conjunction with Recent Adventures which evoke the tradition of low-light studies by artists such as Whistler and Remington, and relate thematically to Recent Adventures. Two of the smaller nocturnes are from farther afield, inspired by the topography of the Chianti region. The title of the central work hints at the artistic journey that Hannock went through in the creation of the painting, as well as referencing the Western Massachusetts studio in which it was created. -

The title of his talk is “Thomas Cole with a Power Sander.” After his talk, Mr. Hannock will sign copies of a large new book about his artwork. One of the most exciting artists of our time – called “the consummate landscape painter” – Stephen Hannock began his artistic career near the site of Thomas Cole’s famous 1836 painting, the Oxbow . Cole has been a reference point for Hannock, whose virtuosic use of light - as well as a power sander - has landed his paintings in museum collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Art Historian Jason Rosenfeld in his 2002 essay Imaginary Realism, Meaningful Contradictions, describes Hannock's work as "both distinctively modern as well as reflective of landscape traditions....Hannock, in his radical technique is a true American luminist.
