The performance is part of the National Opera Association’s annual convention, which will be held for the first time in Santa Barbara from January 4-8, 2017 at the Fess Parker Hotel. Following UCSB Opera Theatre’s presentation of the opera excerpts, a panel of judges—including Kostis Protopapas, Henry Price, Robin Guarino, and Michael Ching—will select the winning opera, which will be performed in its entirety at the 2018 convention. The Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition encourages the composition and performance of short operas especially useful in opera workshops and other training venues. The 2016-2018 finalists include After Life by Tom Cipullo (composer) and David Mason (librettist); Letters from Quebec to Providence in the Rain by Jeremy Gill (composer & librettist); and The Scarecrow by Joseph Turrin (composer) and Bernard Stambler (librettist). -

Falstaff laughs off these accusations and announces to his men that he intends to seduce the wives of Ford and Page. He commands Bardolfo and Pistola to carry letters to the women but they refuse, claiming the action is dishonorable. Passing the notes to a page, Falstaff lectures them on the subject of honor. -

Concerts and Master Classes June 30-July 19, 2014 1 About the Program In its ninth year, Westminster’s CoOPERAtive Program provides three weeks of intensive opera training for young singers. The program is presented in cooperation and consultation with professionals in the field of opera and is designed to help young singers prepare for the essential next step toward acceptance into an advanced young artist or summer apprentice program. The CoOPERAtive offers three levels of training: 1. CoOPERAtive Fellows - singers who are either current graduate students or post graduates, working toward a professional singing career. 2. CoOPERAtive Young Artists - singers who are current undergraduates in music conservatories around the country, who are preparing for graduate school. 3. CoOPERAtive Pianists - pianists who are working toward careers as coaches and conductors in opera and art song. CoOPERAtive is designed to assess the strengths of all participants, nurture their talents and assist in their skill development. Participants receive private coaching focusing on operatic style, performance techniques, dramatic presentation, language and diction, and body awareness, as well as résumé and application advice. CoOPERAtive features unique auditions in which singers are evaluated by professionals in the field of opera – advisors involved with regional opera and/or young artist programs. With their guidance, the program is customized to each singer’s needs to help improve his or her skills. Graduates of the program have been finalists in the Metropolitan Opera Council’s National Auditions and have gone on to work with opera companies throughout the United States. The public is welcome to attend master classes and concerts presented by participants at no charge. -

“Impressive… Regal… Abigail Simon let the nuances come through.” -Jennifer Dunning, New York Times ABIGAILSIMON Recently, ABIGAIL SIMON returned to the Lyric Opera of Chicago to dance in Rob Ashford’s production of Carmen after performing there previously as Louise in Ashford’s Carousel. Abigail later reprised the role with the Houston Grand Opera. She appeared with the Lyric Opera as a principal dancer in Capriccio with Renee Flemming. In recent years, she has performed throughout America in more than 30 Nutcracker productions as the Sugar Plum Fairy. Other recent roles include Juliet in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet (Vienna). She trained at The School of American Ballet and performed with American Ballet Theatre prior to dancing for ten years with Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet (principal roles in The Merry Widow, Tarantella, Night, Kettentanz, Reflections, and many other featured roles). Simon has worked with such renowned choreographers as Wayne McGregor, Christopher Wheeldon, and Benjamin Millepied. After performing as an actress off-Broadway at the La Mama Theatre in Stig Dalager's I Count the Hours, she was invited on Broadway to perform a specially choreographed solo by Gillian Lynne celebrating Phantom of the Opera as Broadway’s longest running show. In 2014, Abigail signed as an Ambassador/Capezio artist and now routinely models internationally, and is recognized as an international manager, guest speaker, and teacher/ballet coach. Abigail recently performed Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain and Romeo and Juliet Balcony Scene at the Gala Internacional de Ballet as a principal guest artist. In the summer of 2017, Abigail partnered with Ray Thompson to form Simon and Thompson Entertainment. -

This is especially important with the upcoming 100th Anniversary of the Cincinnati Opera in 2020. The Guild will be intimately involved in planning and supporting the many community events during the 2020 season to celebrate this momentous achievement. Guild member, Julie Heard, is Co-chair of the Community Celebrations planning committee for this 100th Anniversary celebration.
