Falstaff laughs off these accusations and announces to his men that he intends to seduce the wives of Ford and Page. He commands Bardolfo and Pistola to carry letters to the women but they refuse, claiming the action is dishonorable. Passing the notes to a page, Falstaff lectures them on the subject of honor. In Ford’s garden, with Nannetta and Dame Quickly listening on, Alice Ford and Meg Page read identical letters from Falstaff and determine to teach him a lesson. INTERmissiON Act II—Back at the Garter, Dame Quickly arrives with an answer to Falstaff’s letters. He has won both women’s hearts, but only Alice can see him when her husband is away. Meanwhile, Ford (disguised as “Fontana”) introduces himself as a wealthy man who is in love with Ford’s wife. He offers Falstaff gold to help him seduce Alice. Sir John agrees to help him and leaves for Ford’s house. Falstaff arrives and begins wooing Alice; suddenly Ford storms in looking for the intruder and Falstaff hides in a laundry basket. While Ford searches the house, the laundry basket is dragged to the window and dumped out the window into the river. INTERmissiON Act III—Outside the Garter, Falstaff is licking his wounds when Dame Quickly arrives with news of another rendezvous with Alice, this time in Windsor Forest at midnight. However, this time he must go disguised as the “Black Huntsman.” Their conversation is overheard by the other wives, Ford, Caius and Fenton – who plan the evening’s fun. Later that night, with Sir John standing by Herne’s Oak, Nannetta invokes the forest spirits (the local children) to prick and pinch Sir John as they stage the masque of the Fairy Queen, in the course of which Nannetta and Fenton are married. Ford is accepting when he realizes his daughter has thwarted his wishes through trickery, and Sir John leads the company in a chorus. Concerts and Master Classes June 30-July 19, 2014 1 About the Program In its ninth year, Westminster’s CoOPERAtive Program provides three weeks of intensive opera training for young singers. The program is presented in cooperation and consultation with professionals in the field of opera and is designed to help young singers prepare for the essential next step toward acceptance into an advanced young artist or summer apprentice program. The CoOPERAtive offers three levels of training: 1. CoOPERAtive Fellows - singers who are either current graduate students or post graduates, working toward a professional singing career. 2. CoOPERAtive Young Artists - singers who are current undergraduates in music conservatories around the country, who are preparing for graduate school. 3. CoOPERAtive Pianists - pianists who are working toward careers as coaches and conductors in opera and art song. CoOPERAtive is designed to assess the strengths of all participants, nurture their talents and assist in their skill development. Participants receive private coaching focusing on operatic style, performance techniques, dramatic presentation, language and diction, and body awareness, as well as résumé and application advice. CoOPERAtive features unique auditions in which singers are evaluated by professionals in the field of opera – advisors involved with regional opera and/or young artist programs. With their guidance, the program is customized to each singer’s needs to help improve his or her skills. Graduates of the program have been finalists in the Metropolitan Opera Council’s National Auditions and have gone on to work with opera companies throughout the United States. The public is welcome to attend master classes and concerts presented by participants at no charge.
