Wow,! where’d all this corn come from? It’s shaped up to be a good! crop after a challenging growing season, with more yield! than expected. September was a God-send, with good weather! allowing the corn to dry and mature. ! There’s! lots to learn at upcoming annual and winter meetings.! Just when I think I’ve got some things about soil health! figured out, I realize the learning curve is still steep! My !overall soil health is good, as is clear by residue being broken! down by microbiological activity. But, some cover crops! have been difficult to establish and this year presented a huge! challenge managing slugs. While we often hear about the! soil health and cover crop successes, I think we need to talk! more about the challenges and how to overcome them. On !behalf of GHSCIA, I’d like to congratulate Larry Davis of Daveland! Farms as our regional Forage Masters winner. You can! read more about the revised Forage Masters program in the! This! beautiful fall weather we’ve been enjoying has been great to help mature the bean and corn! crops after the unusually cool wet summer. It has allowed many of us to plant early winter wheat.! So…Now is the time to hop on your ATV and get some soil samples before the ground freezes.! On another note, many of the county level clubs renew their memberships at this time of year.! Please be sure to renew your local club membership and encourage your farming !friends! and neighbours to do so as well. Here! are two important dates you will want to mark in your calendars: ! Throughout the winter there are always many agricultural related meetings and workshops to attend. Keep an eye on your local club news and communications for details. Please enjoy some family time before the preparing for the next crop year. Leosta Farms Kylene & Nik Oreskovic Kylene and Nik both come from farming families and knew they wanted to farm together, for both the job and the lifestyle. They purchased their property near Binbrook in 2012 and needed to decide what kind of farming to pursue. They looked into all kinds of options, and ultimately decided to raise dairy goats, and to grow forage and field crops on their 150 acre farm. This fit well with their backgrounds – Kylene comes from a dairy farm and Nik from a field crop and pourty farm. They also farm in cooperation with Roy-A-Lea Farms – Randy, Michelle and Andrew Spoelstra, Kylene's family – with Nik fulltime on the farm while Kylene also works fulltime as a teacher in Hamilton. They have 2 small children- Klara is three and Blake is 15 months. The Oreskovic’s milk 210 goats, referred to as ‘does’ or ‘nannies’ when milking. They have 130 doelings, 80 dry goats and keep 4 breeding bucks or ‘billy’ goats. They raise Alpine, Saanen, Nubians and LaMancha, some of the most common dairy breeds. The size and disposition of goats works well with their young family. Chores take about 2-1/2 hours morning and evening to milk and feed, allowing time for Nik to focus on field work, some balance for Kylene between teaching full time and farming, and for raising their young family. The couple have neighbours who regularly help with chores and some casual, part time help as well. continued on page 5… !4 continued fom page 4… Nik and Kylene got in fairly early, as the industry has exploded in size and production over recent years. This is largely due to the short gestation period for goats, so herds can grow quickly. Leosta Farms started with 150 and now have more than 400 goats in total. There are about 200 dairy goat farms in Ontario, ranging in size from 60 to over 400 goats, according to Farm and Food Care Ontario. The largest herd in Ontario is about 1200 goats. There are two other dairy goat operations currently in Wentworth (City of Hamilton). Dairy goats allow Kylene and Nik to translate much of their dairy experience, as there are similarities between the goats and a dairy herd. Both cows and goats are ruminants. Milking is essentially the same, although the goats only have two teats and are quite a bit smaller, so the parlour is set up accordingly. Goat milk is priced based on butterfat, and like cows, some breeds produce higher butterfat than others. The same milk testing and regulations apply, just with different threshold limits. Goat milk is typically picked up once or twice a week when the minimum 500 litres is being produced. But there are differences too. This Brief sums up the supply of land in (a) the Designated Greenfield Area (DGA), (b) unbuilt areas within Undelineated Built-up Areas (UBUAs), (c) land added through boundary changes to Barrie and Brantford and (d) Amendment 1 to the Growth Plan. Altogether, the supply of unbuilt land for housing and employment planned until 2031 and beyond is 125,600 hectares. How much land is available for development in the Greater Golden Horseshoe? Determining how much land has been set aside to accommodate future housing and employment across the Greater Golden Horseshoe is a fluid process, because land supply data are not fixed once and for all. Ontario Municipal Board decisions, amendments to local official plans, and boundary adjustments constantly alter the numbers. In the first phase of analysis in 2013, Neptis researchers focused on estimating the extent of the “Designated Greenfield Area” (DGA).1 This was land set aside by municipalities in land budgeting exercises to accommodate the population and employment targets allocated by the Province for the period 2006–2031 in the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

    SECTION 3 DEMOGRAPHIC GROWTH Project Coordinated By: This Section Prepared by: SECTION 3 - Demographic Growth 3.1 Introduction The objective of this section is to present a demographic profile for the Golden Horseshoe (GH) using the most recent (2011) census data.1 This section incorporates data from earlier census periods where available and allows for the identification of key demographic profiles and trends regarding population, immigration, social and cultural impacts and their marketing implications. The data shows profiles and trends for each of the participating municipalities and thus differences in key markets and locations are profiled. Except where indicated, data in this section is from the Statistics Canada censuses of 2006 and 2011. Starting in 2011, information previously collected by the mandatory long-form census questionnaire was collected as part of the voluntary National Household Survey (NHS). Caution should therefore be exercised in comparing 2011 data very closely with data from previous censuses.2 3.2 Population Growth The population of the GH and its municipalities has increased from 6.5 million in 2006 to 7 million in 2011, and now accounts for 55% of Ontario’s population. This represents a growth rate of 8% for the entire GH region over the five year period. The highest rates of growth have been experienced by Halton (14%), York (15%) and Peel (11%) which immediately surround Toronto. As further evidence of growth pressures being experienced in the GH, it is worth noting that Milton, Canada’s fastest growing municipality, grew by 57% over the period.3 Figure 3.1a below shows the growth rate for each upper tier municipality.

Even today, as the region with the largest concentration of urban development in Canada, the Golden Horseshoe (GH) continues to contain in excess of 6,000 farms with almost a million acres of farmland producing over 200 commodities for local and international markets and generating an estimated annual economic impact on the provincial economy of $6.3 billion. The GH is home to a rich, irreplaceable agricultural resource with a long history of prosperous, productive farms. It helps sustain one of the largest food processing clusters in North America and provides fresh local produce to support the burgeoning food service sector that enhances the quality of life for all Ontario residents. However, the nature of agricultural community in the GH continues to change. As pressure for urban growth continues, agricultural lands are under pressure. We need to understand this pressure and the impacts it is having on agriculture in the GH, in order to protect this resource. To carry out and monitor its policies, the Province needs reliable ways of measuring density and monitoring how it changes over time. However, definitions of density vary and there are many approaches to its measure- ment. This paper reviews common definitions and discusses methodological and data problems asso- ciated with density measurements in the GGH. The authors examine existing density distribu- tions in the GGH using 2001 census data at the scale of municipal areas, census tracts, and census dissemination areas, and analyse 10 sample census tracts in Urban Growth Centres to compare gross and net densities for different types of development areas in the GGH.

The Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe (Growth Plan) is a significant regulation requiring evaluation. It has been suggested that density targets mandated by the Growth Plan have continuously decreased the supply of ground-related housing in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH). The combination of regional regulations and the time of processing development applications play an important role in understanding changes in housing supply.
