In 1979, I acquired a master's degree which entitled me to teach languages at a school in Basel. In 1982, I went on a journey to South East Asian from where I did not return before 1988, as I had got a job as a university teacher of German in Taipeh, Taiwan. Back in Switzerland, I gathered some professional experience in fields unrelated to teaching before returning to my former profession in 1990.     A- Executive summary Despite the strength of the far right in France, there has been no in -depth thinking about building a strategy against the forces of the radical right . Because the far right took the form of a political party, the political elite, but also the media and, to a lesser extent, even the NGOs, had an immediate goal, which was to prevent the Front national (FN; in English, National Front) from taking over the local, regional and national government. This strategy, which was built on a wide c onsensus of rejecting the FN outside of the democratic spectrum, proved effective in the sense that the party declined until it became a marginal force in 2007. But in the meantime, within the broader society as well as within political circles, the ideas of the FN made their way in and left their mark , so much so that they finally shaped the political agenda and had a lasting influence on the perception of national identity, immigration and the relationship between the people and the government. The reason is that there has never been a strategy of countering the far right by means other than the purely tactical, such as education, civic awareness and academic research on the radical movements. The emphasis was put, in public action and social mobilization, on phenomena , like racism and anti -Semitism, but not on actors , such as the far right . The main reason is certainly to be found (1) in the non - existence of political extremism as a separate political category in the French constitutional order and (2) in the traditional reluctance of France to admit that it has been, historically, one of the cradles of the extreme r ight.

HE DOMINANT EVENT IN THE COUNTRY'S political life in 1990 Was the forced resignation of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at the end of Novem- ber, after 11 years in office. This development climaxed mounting dissatisfaction among Conservatives with their own government's steady decline in popularity. Dramatic evidence of public sentiment was provided in a series of Conservative losses in by-elections during the year. The principal reason for the government's unpopularity was the community charge (or poll tax), designed to cover the expenses of local government. Despite provisions for rebates and relief, the tax—which had gone into effect in April 1990—was widely felt to be inequitable, to the extent that even many Conservative local councillors resigned rather than implement it. Moreover, it turned out to be far higher than Conservative spokespersons had predicted: an annual average of £363 rather than the anticipated £278. Bitterly opposed by the Labor party and Liberal Democrats, the tax provoked many demonstrations, which culminated in London on March 31 in widespread violence, fights with the police, and looting; 340 arrests were made. In July the government introduced a £3.3-million package intended to hold down the level of the tax by increasing rebates and transitional relief. The disarray in Conservative ranks was compounded by internal differences over the extent of British participation in the European Community, with Mrs. Thatcher isolated in the strength of her determination to hold out against the possible intro- duction of a single European currency. The final stage of the crisis was triggered by the resignation in November of Deputy Premier Sir Geoffrey Howe, the only remaining member of Mrs.

Déjà, en 1982, le révisionniste Ditlieb Felderer avait fait six mois de prison à la suite d’une condamnation prononcée par un tribunal de Stockholm. En Autriche, le Dr Herbert Schweiger vient d’être condamné à un an de prison, au terme d’un procès expéditif, pour avoir dit que les chambres à gaz n’ont pas existé ; il avait déjà fait trois mois de prison préventive. Au Canada, Ernst Zündel vient d’entrer en prison (le 5 février) pour y accomplir une peine de neuf mois d’emprisonnement. Le tribunal de Toronto lui reproche d’avoir diffusé une brochure en anglais dont le titre signifie : « En est-il vraiment mort six millions ? ». Cette brochure, écrite par un Anglais et imprimée en Angleterre depuis 1974, n’a fait dans ce pays l’objet d’aucune poursuite du fait de la justice anglaise qui, comme on le sait, est représentée par « Elisabeth Regina ». Pourtant, au Canada, c’est au nom même d’ « Elisabeth Regina » qu’Ernst Zündel a été poursuivi et condamné. La salle du tribunal était décorée aux armes de la reine d’Angleterre et le procureur était appelé « The Crown » (la Couronne).
