The initial sedentary occupation (400 BC to 800 AD) consisted of few small hamlets as well as a small number of widely dispersed farmsteads. There was no indication that these communities were integrated under any regional-scale sociopolitical authority. The population increased dramatically after 800 AD and it was organized in three supra-local communities. The largest of these regional polities was focused on a central place at Sogamoso that likely included a major temple described in Spanish accounts. -

Abstract This article presents dental non-metric data observed in Muisca samples from the central-eastern Andes of Colombia. Permanent teeth of 146 individuals between 5 and 40 years of age belonging to five pre-Hispanic human cemeteries were observe. Fifteen dental traits were score following the ASUDAS method. A comparison between the values of the five samples shows that biological homogeneity did exist within these populations. At least 800 years of genetic continuity and biological interbreeding among populations of the same Muisca cultural tradition are express in similar frequencies of dental traits. All samples are Sinodonts. Keywords: Northern Andes; Amerindians; Dental non-metric traits; ASUDAS Introduction Final Late Holocene Period (here in after FLHP) is a chronological category used by Northern Andes archaeologists to group ancient human societies that lived between the years 1.500 to 500 before present (here in after BP). FLHP can further be divide into two phases: 1. Initial Late phase (1.500 – 1.000 years BP) and 2. -

Complete Mitogenomes of Ancient Guinea Pigs
To the Caribbean and Beyond: Complete Mitogenomes of Ancient Guinea Pigs (Cavia porcellus) as a proxy for Interaction in the Late Ceramic Age. Edana Lord A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Anatomy at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. 22nd March 2017 Abstract The late ceramic age in the Caribbean occurred from AD500 and was associated with increased interaction between the islands and mainland South America. The domestic guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) was introduced to the Caribbean post-AD500 through human transportation, along with the peccary, agouti, armadillo and opossum. The main goal of this thesis was to use guinea pigs as a commensal model to identify likely human migration routes and interaction spheres within the wider Caribbean region, using complete mitogenomes of ancient guinea pigs. Furthermore, the thesis aimed to identify the number of guinea pig introductions to the Caribbean and locate the origins of early historic European and North American guinea pigs. A total of 23 ancient and two modern complete mitogenomes were obtained. The identified haplogroups indicate that two introductions of guinea pigs to the Caribbean occurred, and that ancient Caribbean guinea pigs were most closely related to those from Peru. The first introduction occurred through previously established trade networks from coastal Colombia to Puerto Rico. A second introduction occurred post- AD1000 to the southern Lesser Antilles, likely as a result of coastal migrations through Peru and the northern coasts of Colombia and Venezuela into the Caribbean. In addition, a potential origin for European domestic guinea pigs was found to be in the Andean region encompassing southern Peru and northern Bolivia. -

Abstract Colombian xerophile or arid environments have exclusive weather conditions somehow uncharacteristic in a country like Colombia, originally covered mostly by exuberant vegetation. -
The Prehistoric Archaeology of Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador
The Cambridge Prehistory Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela Roberto Lleras 1. The geographic setting Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela together cover all of north-western South America; a region broadly comprising over two million, three hundred thousand square kilometres. The whole territory is located in the torrid tropical zone, most of it north of the Equator. The ample morphological and ecological diversity determines the existence of many different natural regions, being the main ones: 1) The Pacific coast, a dry, hilly stretch of lowland in south and central Ecuador and, further north, a mountainous humid tropical forest along Colombia up to the Panama isthmus. 2) The Andes, a complex region formed by several cordilleras cut by longitudinal and traverse river valleys that form climatic micro-niches. The Andes, roughly running in the south–north direction, divide in Colombia into three different cordilleras, one of which extends into Venezuela forming the Sierra de Merida. 3) The Caribbean coast; starting from the west, a dense tropical forest that gradually turns into savannah up to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada maritime massif, and then a long stretch of dry plains forming several peninsulas and encircling the Maracaibo lake. Further east into Venezuela there is the Central Cordillera that gradually dies to give way to the large delta of the Orinoco River. 4) The Llanos, a large system of lowland savannahs intersected by large rivers running into the Orinoco basin. 1 5) The Amazon and Guyana tropical forests, occupying eastern Ecuador, southeast Colombia and south Venezuela. Within each of these main regions there are several different zones; canyons, plateaux, deltas, marshlands, deserts and valleys, each with its specific type of vegetation and fauna. -
