  • What's That Sound?
What‘s That Sound? Bittles‘ Magazine | Record Review When I tell you that there is lots of great music coming out this month I am not just saying this because I have been given lots of huge bribes. It is actually true! That is why, this month, the new album reviews will be spread out over two whole weeks instead of the usual one. By JOHN BITTLES And what a line up of fantastic records there is! This week alone we’ve got the raucous rock of Royal Blood, the psychedelic weirdness of The Wytches, the lush house of Roman Flügel, the strange, techno atmospherics of Ital and tons more. So get your ears ready, your headphones on your head, and let us begin. Since I have been obsessed with this record over these last couple of weeks it is only right to start with the gorgeous house stylings of Happiness is Happening by techno legend Roman Flügel. The follow-up to 2011’s excellent Fatty Folders has been a long time coming, yet it is more than worth the wait. With a light house feel the record’s ten tracks touch on ambient, shoegaze, acid and just about every style of music you would care to name. Opener Connecting The Ghost is a beautiful chug of a tune recalling M83 in its spectral majesty. Friendship Song quickly follows, with a laidback italo-style groove that leads us into the first half of the album which is stuffed full of gently chilled delights. The second half is more dancefloor-based, but is every bit as good.

  • Clubbing in Los Angeles Jonny Coleman Tackles the Multi-Farious Scene in One of America's Biggest Cities
Clubbing in Los Angeles Jonny Coleman tackles the multi-farious scene in one of America's biggest cities. Los Angeles has always been a capital of pop culture. Outside of rave, however, it's never had much of a reputation for its dance music culture. Until recently, that is. The efforts of local promoters have given rise to enormous EDM festivals, the Low End Theory-driven beat scene and thriving techno and house crews—and have led to the city finally becoming internationally recognized. Now, it seems, a place that houses four million people inside the city limits and 18 million in the greater Southland area, is finally representing itself on the world stage. True to its geography—a set of suburbs fronting as a megalopolis—Los Angeles doesn't have a dominant sound or theme. Instead, there are many scenes tugging for attention and battling over the few legitimate dance venues the city has to offer. It's enormously difficult to acquire a liquor license in LA, thanks in no small part to club-owning cowboys like Eddie Nash (of Wonderland murder fame), and those that do can't serve all that late anyway. Most nights last from 10 until 2 or 3 AM (a reality that often results in seeing your headlining DJ for two hours). It doesn't help that many of the historical clubs/bars in places like Hollywood and West Hollywood are a tough sell to fans of underground music, as the price points, degree of parking difficulty and douchebaggery quotient are all high. That means that many parties of note take place downtown or in other east side neighborhoods (if not a private estate).

MBET Senior Projects - Thesis Cover Page Dance Music: The Long Lasting and Far Reaching Effects of a Genre ______________________________ A Senior Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Music Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology The University of the Arts ________________________________ In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of BACHELOR OF SCIENCE ________________________________ By Trent Schindler May, 2019 1 Since the beginning, dance music has seen itself take the shape of, and transform into, a variety of molds. Detroit brought about techno - Chicago, house –and New York, garage (Reynolds, 2016). These hubs, with their own unique musical methodologies, would, like any ecosystem, spawn those who would thrive under their structure, or perhaps in this case, the lack thereof. This, in turn, would be the breeding ground of dance music and its legends. These legends, such as Carl Craig, Kraftwerk, and Derrick May, would not only help to develop something that would become bigger than anyone could have imagined, but they would indeed, like the ecosystem they were molded from, help to spawn, either directly or indirectly, a new breed of dance music altogether (Reynolds, 2016). This new breed would be pioneered by the likes of the Swedish House Mafia, Eric Prydz, and Avicii to name a few. All of these great dance music pioneers and legends have, in turn, influenced me and have put me on a journey to develop, create, and produce my own variation of their craft. They have effectively molded me into the artist I am today, causing me to adventure into the origins of the music and technique and, without their innovative spirit and technical exploration; I would not be navigating this path.

Înv ăţământ, Cercetare, Creaţie (Education, Research, Creation) Volume I AMBIENT MUSIC Author: Assistant Lecturer Phd. Iliana VELESCU Ovidius University Constanta Faculty of Arts Abstract: Artistic exploration period of the early 20th century draws two new directions in art history called Dadaism and Futurism. Along with the painters and writers who begin to manifest in these artistic directions, is distinguished composers whose works are focused on producing electronic, electric and acoustic sounds. Music gets a strong minimalist and concrete experimental type, evolving in different genres including the ambient music. Keywords: ambient music, minimalism, experimental music Ambient music is a derivative genre of electronic music known as background music developed from traditional musical structures, and generally focuses on timbre sound and creating a specific sound field. The origins of this music are found in the early 20th century, shortly before and after the First World War. This period of exploration and rejection of what was classical and traditionally gave birth of two artistic currents called in art history, Dadaism and Futurism. Along with painters and writers manifested in these artistic directions were distinguished experimental musician such as Francesco Balilla Pratella, Kurt Schwitters and Erwin Schulhoff. This trend has had a notable influence in Erik Satie works which consider this music as „music of furniture” (Musique d'ameublement) and proper to create a suitable background during dinner rather than serving as the focus of attention1. The experimental trend has evolved at the same time with the „music that surrounds us” which start to delimitated the cosmic sounds, nature sounds, and sound objects - composers being attracted by sound exploring in microstructure and macrostructure level through the emergence and improvement of acoustic laboratories or electronic music studios as well as Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Boulez, Karl Stockausen.

  • Techno in Germany: Its Musical Origins and Cultural Relevance
Techno in Germany: Its Musical Origins and Cultural Relevance David Robb, Belfast ISSN 1470 – 9570 Dave Robb 130 Techno in Germany: Its Musical Origins and Cultural Relevance David Robb, Belfast This article documents the musical evolution of German techno from Kraftwerk to West Bam and Sven Väth and examines the reasons behind techno’s phenomenal success in Germany and its high profile in the media. It charts the convergence of international DJs on the newly reunified Berlin in 1990 culminating in the famous Berlin sound. It looks at how this underground subculture (claimed as the first area in social life where German unification took place) was subsumed by the fashion and musical mainstream. With reference to cultural theory, the article examines, both aesthetically and socially, the significance of club culture and mass youth events such as the Love Parade. It examines the dialectic relationship between the manipulations of the culture industry and the ‘creative appropriation of culture’ by the ravers and DJs themselves. It probes behind the claims of the German techno mainstream to be a model of functioning democracy and tolerance and looks at the aesthetic philosophies of techno rebels such as Attari Teenage Riot, the Fuck/Hate Parade and the music of the Mille Plateaux label as guided by the theory of Deleuze and Guattari. It’s Saturday 21st July, 2001, weekend of the Berlin Love Parade, the biggest annual techno festival in the world. The railway station at Alexanderplatz echoes with the piercing shrill of whistles, as youth from all over Europe converge and head off towards the Reichstag.
