They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.

They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their ofspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

here was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might T believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’” as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the . They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

• 8 • Celebrant We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made fesh, Jesus, your Son.

For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,

“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,

“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant And we ofer our sacrifce of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifce, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctifed by the Holy Spirit.

In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your , we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the frstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. Amen.

Celebrant As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Postlude

• 13 • All music printed with permission under OneLicense #A-704768 THE ADVENT OF CHRIST is a time of patient waiting for the coming of Christ. Most familiar is the countdown to Christmas – the coming of Christ to humanity as a newborn baby. But Advent also focuses on the coming of Christ at the end of time. As T. S. Eliot says in Little Gidding, “What we call the beginning is often the end and to make an end is to make a beginning.” We believe that the future is already here. Christ reigns among us even today, being made known in Word and preaching, bread and wine, water and oil, prayer, song, and in one another – this community. In Advent we celebrate all these things.

So it is also with our liturgical year. What is the end is really the beginning. For that reason, All Saints’ will be joining an ever-widening circle of Christians who are reclaiming the ancient practice of beginning Advent immediately after All Saints’ Day. Instead of four weeks prior to Christmas, our Advent will embrace seven weeks, allowing us time to be immersed in these images of Christ’s presence among us.

During these weeks, the Advent wreath hangs over the altar, its circle reminding us of the eternity of God, who knows no end, nor beginning. A new candle is lighted around the altar each week as we approach Christmas, as a sign among us of the light of Christ’s presence.

Advent liturgy and music assist us to enter this counter-cultural time together. While the world, at least in “normal years,” is in a furry of holiday activity, we set aside some brief moments to wait, to be still and silent, to breathe in the mystery of Christ living among us here and now today. Reminding us of this refective time in the church’s year, much of our music this season is in a minor key, but is never mournful. These are balanced, however, with songs of hope and joy, light and action. Advent calls on us to follow God’s lead in turning the world upside down.
