In 1995 WWF-India asked this editor to conduct an investigation to identify biodiversity hotspots on the sea coast between Mumbai and Goa, known in Maharashtra as the Konkan coast. The contents of this issue of our Journal are compiled from the report I submitted to WWF-India in 1997 after completing the investigation. The biodiversity hotspots that emerged after an examination of the intertidal zone of this stretch of the coast, not only took in to account the richness of species of flora and fauna recorded on the coast, but also the factors that nourish and sustain that diversity. The 'Hot spots' as visualized here are not just focii of floral and faunal interest but cover a larger area encompassing a whole range of geophysical, chemical and ecological processes. As everyone knows the Mumbai - Goa stretch of our west coast is under intense pressure of industrial, agricultural and allied development. If the species richness and supporting life - sustaining processes are not protected, the country is likely to loose a treasure trove of present and future resources affecting the lives of thousands of humans and non-human beings.

Devgad Dist. Sindhudurg ABSTRACT: Sindhudurg district has been announced as Tourism District by Central Government in 1997. Since then funds were made available by central and state Govt. for the development of tourism infrastructure but, the development was not at desired rate. The intention of research paper was to find out the reasons behind slow development of tourism in the district. The researcher has studied the unique features of Sindhudurg district as well as historical background of the district and status of tourism in Sindhudurg. The water sports like scuba diving and snorkeling has commercialised very fastly due to deep sea driving. Due to very high demand for seafood in domestic market and market at abroad, the mechanized fishing on large scale is conducted. The conservation of this natural resource is very important for the development of tourism in the district. The tourist industry in the district must have to be developed eco-friendly bases like South States. It requires code of conduct for the tourists. For the purpose there must have to be ban on plastic, prohibition on lequire drinking, protection of historical places, conservation of wild life and rare vegetation, conservation of local culture and conservation on sea world. There is lack of direction boards indicating tourist spots. The best infrastructure facilities are the backbone of the tourism industry.

Science College, Akole, MS, India. *Corresponding Author E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The present work investigates the new report of brown marine algae Rosenvingea orientalis from the Harnai rock pools, Dapoli along the west coast of Maharashtra. Key words: Brown algae, New report, Ratnagiri Introduction Harnai is situated 18 km far from Dapoli. It shows abundant rock pools near the Goagad and Fattegad fort along the coast. Earlier work on Rosenvingea orientalis was done by Mishra, (1966). The distribution R. orientalis is reported from Bombay. Biodiversity of Indian marine algae was studied by several authors, Boergesen, 1932; Srinivasan, 1973; Balkrishan, 1981; Biswas, 1845; Chaugule, 1989 and Krishnamurthy, 1972.The study of Kokan coast was carried out by several authors Mumbai (Deodhar,1987), Malvan (Dixit,1940), Kokan (Phanase, 2000) and Ratnagiri (Redekar, 2000). From the Ratnagiri district R. intricata is recorded by Sakhalkar and Mishra (2014) but there is lack of information on this alga. Our collection from Ratnagiri rocky pools of Harnai revealed a new specimen that was identified morphologically as Rosenvingea orientalis (J. Ag.) Boergesen, this is the new record of this species from Ratnagiri region. Material and Methods Marine algal samples with natural growth were collected from Harnai (Dapoli) during the period April to April 2015- 2016.
