  • Syria & the CNN Effect: What Role Does the Media Play in Policy
Syria & the CNN Effect: What Role Does the Media Play in Policy-Making? Lyse Doucet Abstract: Syria’s devastating war unfolds during unprecedented flows of imagery on social media, test- ing in new ways the media’s influence on decision-makers. Three decades ago, the concept of a “CNN Effect” was coined to explain what was seen as the power of real-time television reporting to drive responses to humanitarian crises. This essay explores the role traditional and new media played in U.S. policy-making during Syria’s crisis, including two major poison gas attacks. President Obama stepped back from the targeted air strikes later launched by President Trump after grisly images emerged on social media. But Trump’s limited action did not shift policy. Interviews with Obama’s senior advisors underline that the me- dia do not drive strategy, but they play a significant role. During the Syrian crisis, the media formed part of what officials describe as constant pressure from many actors to respond, which they say led to policy failures. Syria’s conflict is a cautionary tale. • The Expansion of Al-Jazeera in the United States Is an Important Opportunity to Grow Economically If Branding Is Done Correctly
Representing Tony Burman Al Jazeera Board of Directors US Business Strategy The expansion of Al-Jazeera in the United States is an important opportunity to grow economically if branding is done correctly. With an already powerful presence in much of the Middle East, this expansion is vital to the company’s future success. AJA must utilize social media and its relationship with Google and YouTube, combat its Islamic, conservative reputation, and target the American youth to attract the American audience. With expanding interest, AJA can renew contracts with network providers and look for new partners. It should also explore non- traditional broadcast methods such as streaming, as cable usage is falling.1 The most important objective is to revamp AJA’s image so that network providers will have an economic incentive to broadcast the channel. Social media must play a key role in the branding and expansion of AJA. This will help AJA target the American youth and dissociate from AJ. An important use of this will be the AJA “The Stream” modeled after its English counterpart. AJA should create a subsection of their sources that focus on the youth, and establish a substantial form of contact with them. Draw tweets, blogs, etc from smart American youths and engage them in a portion of the show. From there, these individuals will expand the program’s popularity in their social circles and set AJA on a track for success. To maintain credibility as hard-hitting and informative, only a section involves the youth so heavily. With falling ratings for CNN, MSNBC, and other agencies, AJA must seize this opportunity to be a new alternative amongst older generations as well.2 Constant presentation of the issue from Republican and Democratic standpoints will be vital to exploit discontent with biased reporting.

International Journal of Communication 11(2017), Book Review 4694–4696 1932–8036/2017BKR0009 William Youmans, An Unlikely Audience: Al Jazeera’s Struggle in America, New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2017, 256 pp., $29.95 (hardcover), $9.99 (Kindle). Reviewed by Liang Pan University of Washington, USA Combining extensive and longitudinal interviews with Al Jazeera employees and executives, An Unlikely Audience: Al Jazeera’s Struggle in America sheds light on the trial and error of Al Jazeera network’s endeavor to get a foothold in the U.S. news media market. The book is a timely publication that addresses the hot issue of foreign- government-sponsored news media in the U.S. and makes original empirical and theoretical contributions to the rich literature on the political economy of media, the sociology of news production, and comparative media studies. In the introduction and chapters 1 and 2, the author lays the historical and political background and scaffolds the theoretical framework to help illustrate the obstacles that Al Jazeera faced in the United States. On the global level of analysis, Youmans focuses on unpacking the legacies of media imperialism and U.S.–Arab relations that caused a paradoxical situation for Al Jazeera. Although the rise of Al Jazeera constituted the counterflow of global news, the saturated domestic market in the Global North left little room for foreign news media to grow locally. Although Al Jazeera had a grand goal to deorientalize the media representation of the Arab world, it had to be Americanized to gain U.S. market access. On the national level, the author highlights the difficulties facing Al Jazeera in terms of U.S.

BAM Presents Into the Woods Original Cast Reunion Discussion and song performances will take the audience deep into the creation of an endearing Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine musical Into the Woods Original Cast Reunion With Stephen Sondheim, James Lapine, Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, Chip Zien, Robert Westenberg, Kim Crosby, Danielle Ferland, and Ben Wright Tedd Firth, Music Director Moderated by Mo Rocca Reunion conceived and directed by Eileen Roberts BAM Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Ave) Jun 21 at 2 & 7pm Tickets start at $35 Brooklyn, NY/May 27, 2015—Once upon a time, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine wrote a musical called Into the Woods, based on a few well-known Grimm Brothers’’ fairy tales. It won three Tony Awards, ran 765 performances in its original Broadway run, spawned countless productions worldwide, a Broadway revival in 2002 (which won another Tony for best revival), a junior version for school performances, and a major Disney motion picture. Now 28 years later Sondheim and Lapine, with many of the original cast, reunite at BAM on June 21 for a discussion and performance of their extraordinary collaboration. The reunion will be part retrospective; part moderated panel with Sondheim, Lapine, and the cast; and part performance, with cast members performing songs from the show. It will delve into the genesis and creative process of its award-winning score and book, casting for the Broadway production, and the road that led to the New York premiere in 1987. In addition to hearing songs performed by their original interpreters, the audience will have the rare opportunity to witness a meeting of these Broadway legends, and to learn from the cast about their experiences with the production, how the success of Into the Woods affected them, and their work today.
