JOUR 322: Data Journalism 2 units Fall 2017 Section: 21176D Wednesdays, 2-3:40 p.m. Location: ANN 408 Instructor: Dana Chinn, Lecturer Office: ASC 227 Office Hours: By appointment Tuesdays, 10-11:50 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Wednesdays, noon to 1:50 p.m. Other days and times are available. Email: [email protected] I. Course Description Proficiency with gathering, analyzing and visualizing data is essential in journalism today as commodity content becomes increasingly ineffective in both serving the public interest and engaging audiences. This two-unit introduction to data journalism builds upon the reporting skills you developed in JOUR 207/307, Reporting and Writing I and II. Those courses focused on identifying and interviewing people as sources. This course introduces you to using data as a source, and “interviewing” datasets using quantitative analysis and data visualization tools. In the past, a “data story” was a big investigation produced by a separate data journalist team that included statisticians and coders. However, good reporting always did include using numbers to compare, contrast and other put facts and opinions into perspective. And “[n]ow, the fear of numbers marks a reporter as one who can only do part of the job,” according to Sarah Cohen, New York Times data journalist and the author of Numbers in the Newsroom, the primary textbook that we’ll use. In this frenzied media climate, it’s more important than ever for journalists to gather and analyze data themselves rather than rely on a source’s summary and interpretation. Thus, this course will start with building the fundamental skills you need to find and use data in basic news stories and beat reporting. -

Sometimes, the news is just too much to bear. My sense of dread is compounded by my nearly 12 year struggle as caregiver for a loved one with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME/CFS. There are times when it’s really hard to keep going. The world feels exceptionally dark right now. And yet, last night you gave me hope. And, for that I am in your debt. During your Tuesday segment, you opened up about your personal experiences and challenging health journey since contracting COVID-19. You courageously shared your personal and firsthand concerns related to ME/CFS, intimately described the symptoms of the post-viral disease, and illustrated their very real impacts on daily life. As a result, you gave a voice to COVID-19 “long haulers” who live in fear of an uncertain future, terrified that they may never recover their health. You even used the appropriate name of the disease, ME—a rare acknowledgement by a national news outlet. By sharing your own journey, you lent a trusted, credible voice of reassurance and validation, for so many, that this experience is real. The segment may have been only a few minutes, but you spoke volumes to a community that faces daily hardships. In short, you told millions of people with ME/CFS, and those with lasting COVID-19 symptoms, that they aren’t alone or crazy. -

A Tal Samuel-Azran* Review of the Evidence Sammy Ofer School of Communications, The Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya, 1 Kanfe Nesharin Street, Herzliya 46150, Israel Abstract *Corresponding author: Tal Samuel-Azran Some scholars argue that following 9/11Al Jazeera has promoted an Arab perspective of events in the US by exporting its news materials to the US news market. The study examines the validity of the argument through a review of the [email protected] literature on the issue during three successive periods of US-Al Jazeera interactions: (a) Al Jazeera Arabic's re-presentation in US mainstream media following 9/11, Sammy Ofer School of Communications, specifically during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (b) Al Jazeera English television The Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya, 1 Kanfe Nesharin Street, Herzliya 46150, channel’s attempts to enter the US market since 2006 and (c) the reception of Israel. Al Jazeera America in the US, where the paper also adds an original analysis of Al Jazeera America's Twitter followers profiles.
